Southeast Steam Railway - No Longer trading

Hi,   It is my very sad duty of inform you that the Southeast Steam Railway in Bigporth no longer exists.   Actually, the decision to scrap Bigporth was taken a few weeks back, this is because I am moving bedrooms (within the house before any smart person say anything! ) to one which is bigger. The amount of work that would be required to move the layout and modifiy to fit the new room would be so great that it is easier to break it up and start again.   So unfortunatly, it was taken on M

Southeast Steam Railway - A Modern Interlooper!

Hi,   With alot happening with Hythe Parkway over the past 6 months, I have somewhat negelected Bigporth! But never fear, here is an update!   The Layout hasn't been used much since it was 'reopened' a while ago, but there's going to be a pick up in activity with engineering works on Hythe meaning most freight traffic is being diverted to Bigporth.   The First such service was 4O92, The 10:00 Birmingham - Hythe Parkway (diverted to Bigporth) Marsh Distribution intermodel train. This brough

Southeast Steam Railway - New Arrival

Hi,   The SESR has taken delivery of a new arrival. A Hornby Thompson L1 2-6-4T in BR apple green. This was going to be a Birthday Present, but the untimely arrival of my nephew the day before meant that dad left me with nothing and we haven't been able to order it until Tuesday! It's meant to be a replacement for my very old Bachmann V1 2-6-2T, but I thing I might keep that for old time sake!   The L1's a beautiful model and Hornby have done a superb job on it. Looks good when trundling rou

Southeast Steam Railway - Finish and Running!

Hi Guys,   It has taken me 18 months, but the Southeast Steam Railway has now been finished. I was working hard from 08:00 to 16:00 on Sunday to finish the bridge, the final major piece in finishing, there is the odd thing to do like install lights in buildings, but 99% of it is done.   These photos show the finished product:   Overall view of Bigporth:   Close up of Station Building:   Goods Yard:     Close up of the Grounded Coach:   Carriage & Wagon Restoration Cent

Southeast Steam Railway - Almost there!

Hi,   Now that I have finished School for the summer Holidays (yay!) I can now focus my attention on the SESR and the new extension for Hythe. One of the big jobs that stood between me and finishing the SESR was ballasting down the middle of the track. With only a few days between end of term and going on holiday to Wales for a week, I decided to complete that big job. By yesterday morning I had finished ballasting the main running lines!   I was never happy with the grass I had laid between

SESR - Carriage & Wagon Restoration centre

Hi,   Blimey, it has been along time since I updated this blog, because of Work Experience and preparing for my exams. Unfortunatly there isn't much to report!   Over the past couple of days, to relax me before my spanish exam on Wednesday, I have been detailing the inside of the Carriage & Wagon restoration centre, this being one of the major jobs.   So far I have installed lights in the building. One of the big jobs was to install a platform down the middle of shed for body repairs.

Southeast Steam Railway - Lights & Prestflo

Hi Guys,   I lot has been going on on the Southeast Steam Railway, but with all the exhibtions I've been attending with Hythe, it has been forgotten!   So here's a bit of an update. We have wired in 3 of the platform lights and the depot lights:     The depot has got some glazing missing, I'll have to deal with that later, but it still looks good   I went to the Basingstoke show on saturday and came home with this new arrival:     It's a Bachmann Prestflo, I think they are a g

Southeast Steam Railway - Signals

Hi,   Just finsihed the signal controlling the departure of trains from the Goods Yard reception road (It's just sat there for the photos and not stuck in!):     I don't think it's in the right position, I've got a thread in the signalling forum asking whether it is: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/6523-is-this-signal-in-the-right-position/   As with all the signals I've dispensed with the ratio operating system, but soldered a length of brass wire to the end of the ope

Southeast Steam Railway - 1 year on!

Hi Guys,   Now that we are coming to the end of 2009, I thought what I have done in the past year. It feels like I have done nothing, but you'll see form the photos, that there has been quite a lot done!,   So the first couple of weeks of January, the layout looked like this:     Now in the last couple of weeks in December, it looks like this:     It's amazing what you can do in a year!   Over the year we have added three more locos to the fleet:   Bachmann Class

Southeast Steam Railway - Signals & Boxes

Hi,   With having a few spare moments on Monday night, I decided to build the Junction signal to go at the end of Platform 2. I managed to finish it within half-an-hour:     It does work, but not very well!   Plus the Signal box is glazed and ready for an interior. I did see on a Wigan but as it was ??13 for a couple of whitemetal parts. I decided to wait:     Comments welcome!   Simon

By about 2 o'clock this was the state of play:   The carriage and Wagon Restoration centre is ready to be installed:     The signal box is painted and ready to be glazed:     I will install the glasing tomorrow (got another day off school!), but it won't be finished until after the wigan show on the account of having no detailing kit (which I will pick up

Southeast Steam Railway - 'Concreting' Finished

Hi Guys,   After a lot of hard work at Wycrail09 on Saturday, I settled down to do the rest of the 'concreting' around the Carriage & Wagon restoration centre on Bigporth. This is now finished and waiting for buildings!. The only thing I have to do is hide the gap between the concrete and the retaining wall using vegetation. Typical we haven't got any and forget to get some at Wycrail!   On another note, the SESR has 5 more wagons, these are:   An Bachmann Collectors Club 7 plank
