The latest project for me to actually try and finish is an addition to my EMU fleet; a class 421 4 CIG. Watching the real ones, and commuting to a course I used to attend when I was younger on the Southern Region has inspired me to do one, as well as a 442 (more on this project soon).
Initially Ive had two options:
Use MJT etched sides on proprietary vehicles such as Bachmanns mark 1s or something similar
Use the Bachmann mk 1 as a basis to cut and shut sides

work now started on the Class 87 Chassis. The underframe was more or less cut off just leaving the box with the grill on. The parts were re-used from the Original Lima frame and using various tubing and sheeting, the frame was rebuilt to make the model look much better. The end result is worth it IMHO and it certainly improves the overal look of the model and gives the underframe more releif, as the Lima detailing is underscale, two Dimensional, and more suited for H0 guage than 0

Progress has been slow on the Western this week, owing to night shifts - and long ones at that! However, Ive managed to add the grills into the Western and get some Primer onto one side to check for lumps and bumps. The holes for the grills were awkward to drill because of the grills being offset and not centrally mounted as the Lima mouldings are, but however the walkways are correct being centrally positioned. After waving plastic, and a few more days later, some nice new parts arrive from Howes Models; Clear spure with the cab windows and engine room windows, Black spure with the gear tower components.. of whichwas the correct wheelbase as opposed to the complete unit which Howes sell that looks to be too long a wheelbase for the Class 52, And lastly importantly the roof grills from Shawplan. an update on the Western model. Ive now extended one end of the model by approx. 2.5mm, and have now filled all the joins with filler. I have only done one end so far, as this can allow to iron any problems that may happen whilst extending the model. The Heljan front skirting is now almost ready for fitement, but I have now run into a problem that has plagued the Heljan model, and that is the clearance between the skirting and the bogie. Well Another Christmas day gone almost, and can say it was a good one today, with me "playing trains" with the present from the family of 101692, sadly not a loco, but still this unit will be a good detailing and rework project none the less!
An extensive list of improvements and detailing by me has been penciled in but the usual job will be to detail the bufferbeams, get some form of working lights, and correct the livery errors, as well as new bogie sideframes and a rework of the underfram
Following all the positive and encouraging comments on my Last blog post, thought id share some more pictures of 73118. the Mechanism is the Standard Lima motor, now although I am aware that the Lima Motor connected up to DCC is a good performer, Im in doubt as to wheter it will be powerful enoughto actually Haul much, even though the Real 73118 never really hauled failed eurostars much in its career.

73118 has progressed well its hard to beleive that the year will be over now in just over half a month! I think 2009 has been a good year for models for me, the introduction of some models has been quite pleasing!

Some progress on 47768 today finally! The painted ends do make a difference, although I think theyll need redoing, how cruel close up photography is!
The Heljan tanks to make a difference to this model after giving into temptation of using them, the next thing on my to do list is the lights and sorting out the frayed marker lights.

Well continuing what I was mentioning from my Other entry, I have made progress of my model of 47768 in RES livery by Vitrains. Im not sure if I added to my workbench over here, but ill list all the stuff ive done to it so far.The usual detailing was in the Form of Shawplan pipes. Heljan ETH socket, and scratch built jumper socket made from plastic tube and wire and plasticard.
