Camping Coach #3

So the fitting out of the coach begins,   thanks to Keefer for supplying loads of info on MkI interiors etc - so we now have somewhere to bathe and the "1st class" sleeping compartment has a bed.         The plan is to have bunk beds in the remaining two sleeping compartments with room for storage etc. Kitchen fitters have yet to turn up and fit the bespoke oak topped units

DJH Duke of Gloucester - Chassis

What can I say apart from URG!     The owner is well known for his love of spray oil having quite an extensive collection of Hornby Dublo. I am trying to wean him off it for the sake of his modern locos and their plastic parts .....   A full strip is in order methinks

O Gauge Pug finished

All ready for use on Fourgig East at this weekend's Mansfield Show the pug now sits in it's BR black livery. Transfers are HMRS pressfix and my usual several coats of Precision satin varnish.     Windows have been glazed using Deluxe Materials Glue 'n' Glaze, used it for the first time since buying it at the BRM show Doncaster and am very happy with the result, works way better than Humbrol ClearFix which is now in the bin   It will have a light "preserved" weathering at some point and I

WD Austerity - details and sound

have had this loco in the operating fleet on Summat Colliery for years, bought from a fellow member back in early 2009. I got Roomey to weather it but forgot to add the detail pack etc. So as part of this project to add sound I also added the details.   The black plastic parts were fitted and toned down with PP Weathered Wood which is a pretty good match for Roomey's base weathering. The 247 Developments fire iron rack was fitted and blended in too. I removed the fake coal load and made the bu

The Duke Varnished

No, not vanished, varnished   Two coats of fresh PP satin varnish applied by 6 quid eBay airbrush, used just under half a tinlet, so the thinned varnish went back in the tin for next time     Will let it harden off overnight then commence assembly. After that it's coal, weathering (light!) then glazing and crew. Decoder will be a TCS-DP2X

2-8-2 after a couple of weeks

Those who made it to the Member's Day will have seen the 2-8-2 quietly simmering away on Summat Colliery.   For those who didn't here's a couple of shots showing off Roomey's "2 weeks into service" weathering that sets it off perfectly 🙂       Now, must get that article finished for Model Rail .....

The Duke and his Chassis

I'm still doing prep work and planning with this build. Chris' instructions suggest you start with the chassis so I've stripped the brit chassis down to it's drive wheels and coupling rods. Here's a quick snap of the first trial fit of the body on the chassis - it fits!     As I'm not using the recommended chassis there will be a few deviations from the instructions. I will not be using the resin front motion support bracket (part 3) as the cast lubricator supports will do nicely. The Hornb

Public Outing

Thanks to Diesel Dayz for allowing the 2-8-2 a guest appearance on Duke Street at this weekend's Derby Show     raised a few eyebrows and even attracted the attention of Steve Flint B-)

"As Built"

I've had a few requests to see the 2-8-2 in unlined "as built" black, so in homage to Hornby's latest Britannia offering here's 91000 before lining out and naming       Keen eyes will observe the digitally removed cylinder lining and the fact that the return crank is not actually soldered to the crankpin

Slater's All Third - Pull Rods and a Start on the Body

Last night I refitted the wheels and made up and fitted the brake pull rods.     I can't remember if I did this on the Brake Third, but all the linkages on the pull rods are pinned and would pivot if the vacuum cylinder moved! Just a lick of paint and they are done   Today I spent my lunch hour cutting ten sets of seats out of their sprues ready for assembly and tonight I got the basic bodyshell together as far as the floor. Here's a snap of the body after gluing still sitting in my nift

The leg bone don't connect to the knee bone ....

Am I glad I fitted the return crank/eccentric rod before anything else.   It doesn't connect to the expansion link too well at all, in fact by 2mm   Looking again at the drawing (a lot!) leads me to the conclusion that the motion bracket/weighshaft needs to move back. The weight drawing of course shows a Britannia type bracket and I'm using a 9F one and there are differences.   One advantage of all this rework is that the valve rod will not need shortening and clearances underneath the

A work of art

Had to post this!   got the bodyshell back from de Selby today - he's fitted new flush running plate vertical faces complete with rivet details etc.   Absolutely stunning, I really need to make sure the rest of the loco is up to this standard now

Big Big Hymek for Fourgig East - Part 8

Thought it was time for an update.   I've lowered the loco on it's bogies by removing material from the bogie pivot - the thickness of two washers, so about 1.5 to 2mm. These washers sit inside under the shoulder screw to compensate.   JLTRT couplings have been assembled, just need to chemically blacken them and get them fitted     Green stripe has been airbrushed on using Humbrol 36 and electrical tape for a nice clean masked edge - a trick #1 son picked

9MT A Razor Saw Let Loose

So, one loco drive Hornby 9F, plus two GBL 4MTs were attacked with a razor saw.  There's a lot of bits....      Here's all that is left of the 9F body        And I've cut and shut two sections of tank and cab from the two GBL Class 4s to make this        Also been experimenting with a Triang Princess bogie for the rear. If this works ill replace the wheels with larger more prototypical ones and this will set how long t

The Duke so Far

Well, work on the Duke will be suspended as I've run out of bits!   The ex-JE etched deflectors will be posted out next week, so I'm told. Chris at Golden Arrow is chasing his supplier for the missing buffers - he already has the cylinder drains.   So I thought a few pics of the current state of play might be a good idea.           I still havn't sorted out the cab details yet, although I have found a pair of Hornby crew that will do fine. Big question is how to fabricate the

Standard Eight - Ready for Peterborough

It's finished! All detailing added and I've even risked my own hands with an airbrush to give it a basic weathering ahead of the Peterborough BRM show   Here's a few snaps           Pretty pleased, just got to clean the wheels and sort out the chuff frequency on the sound chip. Note cut down Bachmann coupling to allow for the vac pipe on the front buffer beam.   The original 93000 will be prepared for sale at the show (or after). I will be including a copy of the Hornby mag th

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Almost ready for varnish

So,   the lining is almost done, still got some tidying up to do, mainly just some re-lining where touching up has run into the ocre. I've also got the end strapping to paint.     Despite the condition of the coach, no roof let alone windows and a strong smell of paint - some passengers have already taken up residence too!

The Duke Finished

As promised some snaps of the Duke on Summat Colliery at the Syston Show. I took advantage of the sunlight on Sunday as you can see.             and finally, late in the day the ultimate express loco met up with possibly the ultimate mixed traffic loco

Harry Detailed

Some of you might have seen in my status updates that I've been fiddling with Summat Colliery's resident shunter "Harry" this week.   He's received a small Stay Alive capacitor pack to his ancient Lenz Standard (not Plus) decoder and I've now turned my attention to the outside.   I started adding some real coal to the bunker, and then went a bit mad sprinkling coal dust and a few large lumps to the footplate.     Needs a quick waft with some matt varnish but I'm pretty happy with the im

More power Igor!

I always knew that the second hand Sagami motor that I had installed in the 2-8-2 was, well, a bit weak. It ran hot even just connected to the gearbox.   Now that I'm in the final assembly stage when it came to running in the assembled chassis following painting it was clear that it was just not up to the job.   Thanks to artisan100 - Geoff at Comet Models a Mashima 1628 together with a new matching steel worm gear was supplied in doble quick time. I took the liberty of also ordering a 14mm

Nearly There .....

Quick photo of the 2-8-2 before fitting of the brakes and rigging.     Tender needs coal and a coupling, but that's about it really.   Went a bit mad with the Brit detailing pack I got off eBay, fitted the screw link coupling and backing plate (if that's the word?) plus the steam heat pipe as well as the cylinder drains that I bought it for. The rest will go to the Duke of Gloucester that is to come B)   Wonder if it still works?   UPDATE:   Couldn't resist taking this pic of the

Sandboxes and Filler Tubes

The detailing is getting a bit silly now, I need to sit quietly in a darkened room, or just get on with the kitchen!   Trouble is, now I know how the sandboxes are arranged on a Brit and the with daylight visible between the boiler and frames on the 2-8-2, the absence of sandboxes and filler tubes would just bug me.   So, I got busy with some plasticard, EMA Plastic Weld and a scalpel.     There's still some cleaning up to do and the tops of the tubes need trimming to ensire that they

Deltic Prototypes - Dapol Body Almost Done (2)

One side done, ready for handrails and varnish     Bit of a disappointment that the Fox nose plates (the ones under the fake headlamp) are too long for the Dapol body, not sure who is at fault, but I've had to trim the "The" and "Ltd" off the ends to get them to fit   Hand rails are going to be made from Hornby steel handrail wire, I'm going to have to fabricate some form of jig/gauge to make sure they are all the same length (two sizes), b ut it's getting there     EDIT: Both si

Parkside RCH 5 Plank 12 Ton Wagon - Done?

Whilst waiting for the deltics to turn blue I've spent some time on the "loco coal" wagon for Summat Colliery. As I said before I've followed David Spencer's article in issue 06 of Hornby Mag (loosly) and have arrived at this:     Real coal over a lot of lead make it a heavy little wagon now, so should run well at Warwick/Nottm/Mansfield shows.   I think a little bounce sprayed weather black on the underpinnings should finish it off   Who would have thought that I would have heaped s
