O Gauge Sentinel - Done

So the crew climbed aboard (driver needed his right leg amputating below the knee to clear the motor) and I've added a little coal around the door bottoms and chassis ledges to simulate spillages during loading.   Not sure how prototypical this is but is made me smile last night   So here's some snaps ahead of the photoshoot for the MR article           So, that's it, on to the next project - rebuilding the L&Y Pug I bought from Scanman ages ago - the chassis is already s

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco More Pipework

More pipework and handrails today. I'm still waiting for some guitar strings to do the main boiler feed pipes. These need to be done before handrails and the smoke deflector can't be fitted before the handrail ....     Fitted the blastpipe etc to the underside of the side chimney though - starting to look like a Crosti now

Parkside RCH 5 Plank 12 Ton Wagon - 3

One can (well, not all of it!) of Halfords Ford radiant red later and we have this:     The intention is to do a "Summat Colliery" version of this little wagon from my childhood home town     Must get an order off to HMRS for some black shaded lettering etc, it's starting to be quite a pricey wagon 🤑

O gauge Sentinel ready (almost) for varnish

Here's a quick snap of the Sentinel as it stands this lunchtime     All I need to add is the "RA 1" lettering (will have a dig around in the transfers box tonight) and then it's varnish time   I am going to have a go at oil finishing the steel buffers, not done this since school, but I have a blowtorch and some nice dirty engine oil - what can possibly go wrong

A dirty gathering

After doing a little more tweaking of the Crosti I'm building for Gavvy2 I took the opportunity to take a low light snap of all three locos recently received back from Roomey.     My Crosti is behind '021 with an O1 at the back. The O1 has had real coal added and the detailing pack fitted before weathering. A Paul Chetter (pauliebanger) L1 Zimo sound chip awaits, which whilst not strictly accurate is at least a Thompson 2 cylinder loco   First outing for my two new locos will be the Linc

Camping Coach #5 - Buffers

The GWR coach cream was airbrushed on last night, so while that hardens in readiness for the brown (yes, I know camping coaches were green and cream, but the SK that www.railholiday.co.uk have is brown and cream) I thought that some form of rudimentary buffers needed to be sourced.   The coaches bought from Blackrat of this parish both came without the standard Lima offerings, so from my bit box we have some 8mm lengths of Chuppa Chups lolly stick (kids are useful after all!) and common all ga

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Preheater and Handrails

My attention turned to the pre-heater today, so the chassis was stripped down to release the Hornby underboiler/motion support and the resin parts trimmed up and superglued on. After a quick test assembly to make sure everything was in the right place the joins were re-inforced on the insides with epoxy resin glue.     After leaving the epoxy to set, a final fettle was needed to ensure a good fit with the chassis block and job done (apart from painting).   Note also from the photo the sec

Crosti #2 X-ray

I recently installed a copy of Photoshop Elements (bought as a present for SWMBO ages ago but never installed) and as I'd fitted a bigger Stay Alive capacitor to the Zimo sound chip I tought I'd have a go at doing an "X-ray" cutaway type shot to show just where everything fits.   Thanks to Andy Y for his guidance I managed a half decent image     Need to practice a LOT more with the magnetic lasso tool, I got a bit bored with it towards the rear of the tender. It would have been nice to h

Standard Eight - Ready for paint

All the detailing done, bits missing from the second hand chassis fabricated and so, good weather permitting, some paint should fall on the loco body this weekend.               Plates are on the way from Narrow Planet (thanks Steve!) so hopefully next week I should have some pics of the loco in ex-works condition before I try to weather it

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Assembly Completed

Following a trip to my local music shop I ended up with a Rotosound second bass string for the insulated pipework. I felt kinda silly as I have three fully strung basses in the wardrobe that I never even considered checking oh well.   So pipework is all done and I have also added the extra steps using Evergreen microstrip cemented in an "L" section for the undercab step and some scraps of phosphor bronze sheet for the smokebox steps.   Construction is done and following a good wash in warm

Now, where's the Satin Varnish ......

Loco body all lined out and I've picked out some of the pipework in very much the same way as Hornby do on their current Britannias - although I've used a light grey for the lagging rather than white. I think this looks more subtle.       Yes, this is the deflector that got superglue over it and needed rubbing back and respraying as revealed on one of my status updates Those Narrow Planet plates do look the dogs     And finally, a quick shot of the cab showing the cream roof a

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Details, details

Here I go again, dragging a build out with details that hardly anyone will notice, especially when the roof is on!   First glazing bars on the luggage compartment doors. I started with some 0.5mm microstrip, taped it to the bench at 2mm intervals then slid some paper underneath and marked out the horizontals. These were laid and then the area flooded with Plastic Magic.     Once hard, a scalpel blade was slipped underneath to seperate from the paper. After a quick coat of matt black and t

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Even More Pipework

More pipework, a part of a build that I actually really enjoy and always end up doing more detail than I intended at the start. So here's the steam pipes to injectors with the control valves made out of fine wire and some old electical insulation. Note new Hornby pipework below the cab.     I've also fitted the safety valves from the donor bodyshell and some nice Bachmann sprung buffers. The reverser rod is some mains wiring cable I found lying around that was the right diameter.     T

9MT - Underpinnings

Once the bunker was fixed in place the underside of the loco needed to be sorted. Main problem is that the main body fixing on the 9F is through the bottom of the chassis into a boss under the cab floor. A floor that is no longer there as we are using the 4MT cab.   After a lot of thought the following pic shows what I came up with       A section of 4MT floor under the cab area with the 9F boss turned down in height and bonded on, with extra sections from the

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - brown out

Well, in between the showers I got the brown paint on - thanks to Brian at Shawplan for letting me pop round on Friday and pick up some stocks. Why is is I always spend at least an hour chatting???   anyway here's a pic     Next is to see if I can paint the black raised areas then flood the cream in the recesses, but that's not until the brown is well and truly dry.   Sorry Moz, I used grey primer ......

O Gauge Pug - primed and ready

And lo the primer was warmed on the radiator and applied to the shiny brass     There's one or two bits that could do with a touch of filler, so will wait until next week now until after the BRM SHow at Doncaster (see you all there!)   It won't do any harm for the primer to harden off over the weekend anyway

9MT - The Bigger Bunker

A class 9 loco with class 4 coal capacity was never going to work, also the twin axle rear bogie kicked out beyond the rear buffer beam. The end of the bunker was cut off where the footstep indentations were on the bunker tops and then slits cut to separate the sides from the coal load and supporting structures. Two scrap bits of plastic were cut to the right size to splay out the sides so they were parallel and more supports glued in to hold them. A steel rule clamped to one side helped to get

Final Photos Before Painting

As promised here's the 2-8-2 in all her unpainted glory so you can see what has been added to the basic Hornby green mouldings                 Now, where's that grey primer .......

All Rivetted Up!

Basic rivetting is complete on the 7mm Sentinel and sealed under satin black. I am going to add the extra detail on the cab and tank sides but not today     Next step I suppose is to start to get to grips with that Bob Moore lining pen or wimp out and use HMRS pressfix ...

Got a bit distracted ....

Got home from work yesterday and a package was waiting from Comet (thanks Geoff!)   So I kinda forgot about doing more connecting rods and waded into putting the DE38 drive extender together for the gearbox.   Here is is in all it's glory attached to the GB5 and Sagami motor.     I took Comet's advice and have not used the grub screws on either of the gears fitted to layshafts. a spot of superglue holds the layshafts in place and the gears are free to rotate on the shafts. This does see

The Duke Finished

As promised some snaps of the Duke on Summat Colliery at the Syston Show. I took advantage of the sunlight on Sunday as you can see.             and finally, late in the day the ultimate express loco met up with possibly the ultimate mixed traffic loco

Harry Detailed

Some of you might have seen in my status updates that I've been fiddling with Summat Colliery's resident shunter "Harry" this week.   He's received a small Stay Alive capacitor pack to his ancient Lenz Standard (not Plus) decoder and I've now turned my attention to the outside.   I started adding some real coal to the bunker, and then went a bit mad sprinkling coal dust and a few large lumps to the footplate.     Needs a quick waft with some matt varnish but I'm pretty happy with the im

9MT - Done (for now)

So another stay in hospital gave me the time to get the lining finished on the 9MT so here's the right hand side completed.       Only thing left is weathering, glazing and real coal added to the bunker.   Loco is now back together and sitting in a modified Triang 9F box for safe keeping until I can find the time to fire up the airbrush.

9MT - Body Fabrication Done (Almost)

I know it's been a while, but the weather has been good so gardening and mucking about with my car took priority.    Finally I have made the extended tank tops and filed them down to fit.  First photo shows the tops glued together and a card template I made to help with the fitting to the much wider 9F boiler.       A large file was used to knock them down to size - not one of those tiny little things that we modellers mostly prefer. Here's a shot of the body
