Another update that got missed during the summer. Following on from the success with the MERG electronics I looked at tidying up the wiring of the pushbuttons with another new PCB. JLCPCB again came up trumps and even managed to produce plated through slots for the switches to solder to. Wires

I've been playing with lots of MERG stuff The plan is to have full DCC control of the servo driven turnouts, but with push buttons on the side of the layout too, that's what the middle "PMP27" board does. A fellow MERG member has ordered a load of proper PCBs for this circuit so that should help neaten it up a bit. What? another Colliery Layout?

We are having a Box File Challenge at next year's Mansfield Show, so as, Scalescenes have just released their box file kit I thought that with a few subtle modifications I could make another corner of Summat Colliery. This time it will be served by the internal narrow gauge system but with a section of standard gauge for exchanges etc. I already have a few lengths of "crazy track" so just need to get a narrow gauge Y point and I'm away. Here's how far I have got so far

Trackwork complete

Just a quick entry before the forum goes down again at 1pm (which it didn't in the end!) Trackwork complete, wired up and tested. the wagon only tracks that run 90 degrees to the running lines are not powered though. The little 0-6-0 needs a run up to get over the turntables too!

Trackwork #5

So I set up the building board again, this time for the "plain" dual gauge track leading to the fiddle yard I did have an idea though that if I could make another fixed blade "crossing" I could move the NG track to the centre just before the fiddle yard exit to make it possible to have dual gauge cassettes that could be turned round .... Seems to work, I can always rip it out and make it plain if it causes trouble Here's the section

Trackwork #4

Some more pottering about with trackwork went on over the weekend Culminating in the handbuilt section being cleaned down and primed yesterday. Respaced the code 75 flexi to better match the rest of the track and removed the overcentre spring from the Y point as it will be servo operated. Some minor tweaking has since been carried out, if you look at the centre NG rail just before the single bladed turnout you can see the gauge is too wide. Good

Trackwork #3

OK, first draft of the pointwork etc is done, some fettling to do but it's removed from the build board and had a quick clean. Isolation gaps next and some wiring then I can test the running with a real loco or two! I'm also thinking about making the narrow gauge track move to the centre of the standard gauge, without sharing a rail etc towards the fiddle yard exit, then I can make dual gauge cassettes that can be rotated easily. Trackwork #2

Slow progress but getting there. Some changes from the Templot plan to reality but pretty close. It all looks a dog's breakfast at the moment as heat from the soldering and all that flux has made a mess of the tape etc holding the sleepers down. I'm sure it will all clean up and once painted will be okay

Time to Start Track Building

Well after a quite a while getting back to grips with Templot and a LOT of help from @martin_wynne I have a track plan finalised. There will be some changes in levels, as the exit road(s) will have a small incline through a rocky cutting and the siding leading off the Y will be for side tippers unloading into to conveyor that takes spoil over the loop track onto the raised hillside at the back. The Trackwork IS for Turning

Some trackwork finally! The handbuilt turnout section has been wired and fixed down along with the conveyor pit and associated road. Last night I got the tortuous looping curve section bonded down and started to look at the Peco Y that joins up to the boxfile. Slight deviation from the Templot plan for the curve as I had to straighten out the turnout exit to allow the Farish 0-6-0 chassis to run through. That's about it for now

Here's building A about as far as I can get until track laying is completed. I've since added the doors, door rails and downpipes etc. Here's a couple of shots that show the modified rear entry through building A for a bit of OO9 track. Templot Time

So after some playing around with flexitrack and standard turnouts I have come to the conclusion that fully handbuilt is the way to go at least for the points! It's been a while to say the least since I used Templot, but managed a first go at roughing out a plan last night. For a while I've had an idea about having some kind of loading/unloading facility in the centre of the layout in between the Scalescenes Boxfile and the hill/cutting. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Walthers Bulk Transfer Conveyor Kit from Gaugemaster. Hardstanding Take 2

A bit out of sequence this, back in lockdown #1 I realised that the cardboard Scalescenes hardstanding/inset track was just not going to work in the long term. It was uneven and was already starting to get damaged by track cleaning etc. So there was nothing else to do but rip it up and get the DAS clay out. Chris Nevard eat your heart out LOL Top surface cut back, I kept most of the surrounding card as it was just the running surfaces that I needed to replace.

Growing Up - Rhywbeth Pwll Glo?

The boxfile has sat on the shelf since the Mansfield Show in March but I have plans for it! A Tim Horn 4ft x 1ft baseboard has been ordered and the boxfile will sit in the left hand corner of a new Welsh inspired colliery layout (Rhywbeth Pwll Glo?) here's the (very) rough plan It will feature some dual gauge trackwork with a narrow cutting leading to the right. Some sort of conveyor system will take spoil away with hopefully working tipper wagons etc.

Groundworks

So, after an extended period of procrastination I settled on the final position of the conveyor pit - right over a strengthening rib under the baseboard LOL Nothing now for it I got the 2 layers of 3mm foam core stuck down to bring the level up to that of the boxfile and then using some left over View Glue I stuck down the track plan It was important to get this down as the positioning of the dual gauge pointwork is criti

Further Landscaping

Some progress with the hillside. More cardboard was added with supports in between, once the PVA had dried I started with the paper strips to flesh out the landform. I've lost my Woodland Scenics rock mould, so another is on it's way. I've also bought a couple of nice stone tunnel portals from eBay, cast in plaster so should fit in nicely. Once the paper strips and rock faces are in it will be hanging basket liner time. Could be fun trying to buy some during a win

Catching Up

After being a bit ill the last few days a bit of a catch up was in order yesterday. So building D was completed and the backscene added. This is a departure from the kit being an image of Linby Colliery gleaned from the internet, suitably sized and washed out in Photoshop to push it into the distance. It's a bit blurred but I think that helps with the false perspective too

CAD

or cardboard assisted design. Started roughing out the right hand side landscape. Wanted to incorporate a tunnel to hide the off scene exit to the fiddle yard, so will have a sort of half cutting with stone/rock walls behind. Next steps, more cardboard and then some paper strips to flesh it out before hanging basket liner etc. I also have some Woodland Scenics rock moulds, so might slap some paster of paris in them to see if I like the effect.

Building A complete with lighting

Boxfile Bodging

So I'm getting closer to the point of fixing down track and one of the starting points has to be the original boxfile layout. I've already sawn a corner off so that it fits snugly around the front facia of the Tim Horn baseboard but at the other end we have the inset Y point that was manually operated with a bit of wire in tube. To convert this to servo drive from underneath I needed to access the mechanism to remove the wire and the overcentre spring. To help blend in the transition
