31466 painting EWS

31466 is rapidly approaching completion,   Today I finished off the airbrush work, masking the stripe and spraying the EWS red. There are now a few areas which will require touching up with a brush, paint the body side grill black and then add transfers.   I have also applied the second coat of BR Blue to 50002, which looks a lot better now. If the rain holds off I will get the roof painted tomorrow and it can be finished off. 37196 had the black sprayed, so will now need transfers and varni

Painting: 50002 / 31466 / 37194

An afternoon off work coupled with amazing weather has resulted in some progress on the painting backlog, If the weather can continue to saturday I should be able to do the next colour....   I ran out of white primer half way through painting the TDA, that said the tank is well covered and the chassis will be black so I might get away with it. Its a shame as I could have done with spraying the blue today.   31466 is progressing nicely, I finally had some luck with the almost life expired

TTA slurry tanks pt 2

Last night I finally managed to get into the workshop and get on with the slurry TTAs   The first two wagons are now complete, pending a coat of paint, transfers (which I need to draw up and commission from Railtec) and walkways (more on which later). They were of course the easy ones…   So I have now made a start on building the more difficult version with the Gloucester suspension. I started by preparing the bodies in the same way as I prepared the other two, adding replacement ends and re

Slurry Tanks

One of the key workings on Wheal Imogen will be separating slurry tanks out of a mixed rake of wagons and shunting them under the slurry loader. For the post privatisation period this is covered by a set of 4 Dapol Silver Bullets (they need the roof platforms and ladders upgrading but are good enough for now.) However the layout's first exhibition is likely to be running in 1980s mode, for which at present I only have the TDA bogie tank (that is almost finished). I have 4 STS TTAs (ex Bowaters)

31466 pt2

While touching up the paint on 31466 I spotted a fairly major error on my model. As shown on this photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/rob50037/14130188312/in/photolist-qKrSUb-e27H2q-nwU7bv-nwCUGq-n52kF3-nwVnBN-EgNpme-e4Yhgz-c5Qep7-eik48S-igPgGh-G29o5a-nVVN6n-caKyFY-nJ8qxB-nfpusb-oPXQAH-eisD8D-og5nET-WjH99W-qSd78m-5qLUm9-eiGvPy-YAafUV-dcLXLj-nVF1Kv-nXWWrh-nEYmAL-c7MJrS-c5Qr19-eiyXe9-ecM9iA-c6ufXy-nW2Vu9-Zsr3KJ-oRWpvZ-qFferr-Uu7Cgx-qwcwdR-r2HXoP-Y95b5Z-qPdgr7-fB84CE-r2UJNa-rNYyYz-nnF8Vh-rvKaKX-fB

31466 EWS Respray

A long time ago I started a respray of a Hornby Class 31 into the Wessex Trains pink livery as part of fleet of stock in 2006 condition. I got as far as converting the body, repairing the damage due to the original chassis expanding, and painting the yellow ends.   As part of my process of finishing off old projects either for use on Wheal Imogen or for sale, I have dug it out to finish off.   First off a decision was needed on which livery to paint it in, a toss up between Fraggonset Black,

37521 renunbering

Sometimes a project comes about through planning, others it comes through chance. This project is defiantly driven by the latter. After reading mention of DRS Class 37 ends produced by Rainbow Models on another thread, I clicked through to have a look what else they might have to offer. The first thing I saw on entering their website was a set of Bachmann 37/5 flush front ends for £10 with damage to the locating lugs. This put me in mind of 37521 English China Clays, which unsurprisingly w

Class 58s finished

As an interlude between body and chassis on my GW 47xx build I have cracked on with finishing the class 58s.   The first job was to refit the door handrail plates to 58047 on EWS, all of which are now glued in place finishing the loco for now. Eventually I may do some further work on this loco, it was originally intended to be my other favourite Class 58 58050 and May still get a renunber. I am also tempted to repaint the grills as per the Mainline example as part of the weathering.   Back

58015

Back in April 2008 (according to the RMWeb archive) I started a project renumbering a Heljan Class 58 in Mainline branded triple grey as 58015. While the paint was very thin preventing my usual renumbering method, it was a very close match to that from Phoenix so the cab sides were resprayed. Unfortunately Heljan made a complete mess of the rest of the livery, painting the body side grills and cab doors the wrong colour. At the time I repainted the large side grill and the cab doors, but nev

Paint, transfers and a coat of varnish now finished and 47817 is on the home straight.   It just needs to be fitted with a window which was damaged in removal from the body.   The only other task remaining is to fit the handrails to the cab doors, at which point it will be good to go

Yet another old project, this one was started in 2010....   It should have been a simple renumbering job, along with upgrading the roof. The Vi Trains paint had other thoughts however, requiring a repaint to remove the old numbers, the Phoenix Virgin dark grey turned out to be a lot lighter than the model so currently it looks rather odd   Here is the loco taken back in 2010 after the repainting, at which point work stopped.   While looking for a different project I dug this out yes

Tractor bashing - a blast from the past

Back in the mists of time when Bachmann released their truly awful first attempt at a Class 37, a number of us started trying to find ways to make it look something like the real thing. The idea was that the Lima roof and cantrail were far superior (for those unaware Bachmann originally got the cantrail area badly wrong), while the Bachmann cab and tumblehome (and chassis) were much better.   The soloution chop two into one.   At the time I had 3 of these conversions underway, the announcem

Virgin Cross County loco hauled: improving Hornby Mk2e

My future layout plans call for a rake of Virgin and Intercity mk2 coaches to run with my Virgin Class 47s, while this is primarily aimed for a future exhibition layout (which isn’t planned to cut timber for another 3 or 4 years at best). There is an outside possibility of building some long cassettes and having a play with it on Wheal Imogen however. The formation is going to be formed as follows: Mk2d BSO Virgin (Hornby with an improved chassis and roof ribs removed) Mk2e TSO Virgin (Hornby)

TDA continued

The TDA is now almost ready for the paint shop, with some. S Kits bogies fitted (along with some Maygib steel wheels). A roof walkway has been created out of two Bachmann TTA walkways   The wagon now just needs discharge equipment, the end walkway / ladder and the hand rails, then it’s food for paint

Virgin XC TSRB

Way back in 2006/7 I converted a Hornby mk3 buffet into a TSFB buffet for a Virgin XC rake, the conversion was fairly straight forward (I used the window frames from a set of Hurst Models etched sides glued into position). At the time I sprayed it into Virgin red, the first coat was a nightmare with really poor coverage, while the second peeled off with the masking. I then made a mess of the transfers (putting the stripes on too low) which caused further damage to the paint on removal.   Havin

2017 in review

Third time lucky tying this….   2017 in review: This year saw a return to “modern image modelling” with the start of Wheal Imogen, as such a few old projects have been taken out of storage to finish off for the layout.   The first out of storage was the TUA slurry tank conversion, with the body work now finished and the model just needing the bogies building (for which the parts are now sourced) and the end handrails. It should be finished in Q1 http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/b

Train Formations

Having managed to loose a lot of my past research during various computer changes through the years, I am going to document it here in order to try and avoid having to do it another time! Now I have no layout to run this on in the works, nor likely to build one any time soon (with Brent in 1947 and my Cameo China Clay layouts a priority). In the long term I still would like to build a continuous run exhibition layout set in 1998 with a focus on the Devon or Cornwall mainline.   For t

HST modelling

Way back in 2008 I purchased two pairs of Hornby HST powercars, at the time I converted the intercity pair to P4 and fitted buckeye couplings. While the Intercity pair (for Great Western Trains) were not renumbered, the Virgin Cross Country pair were given new identities.   While in 1998/1999 Great Western still had a lot of powercars in Intercity livery, finding suitable examples is more difficult given one has a guards window, and the two have different roof grills.   There were onl

Cargowaggon Twins + 37196

The Cargowaggon twins are now nearing completion, with the second half assembled as per the first and then fitted with the castings for the axle boxes and the springs. It now just needs to be fitted with one part (which I have no clue as to the purpose) and the lashing eyes etc. before it can enter the paint shop. The plan is to brush paint the silver and then airbrush the blue (although to be honest the latter is probably best done first).     Here are the twins along with a full size Ca

Cargowaggon Twin

One of the key stock items for Wheal Imogen are the vans for bagged clay, for the 1980s this is well served with a mix of VAA/VBA/VDA and VGA along with a couple of long wheelbase Cargowaggons. Whereas for 1998 I am a little light, with just the VGA and Cargowaggons. Out of interest when did they start to appear with no Cargowaggon branding?   In order to mix things up a little I have added one of Jon Hall's kits for one of the 2 axle Cargowaggon pairs. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/ind

ECC TDA Slurry Tank Conversion pt2

A little more work on the TDA,   I have added another coat of filler to the ends which are now nearly finished, the buffer beam detail has been added from the scrapbox (along with depening the headstock with a strip of plasticard). While the underframe detail has been started, (it just needs the discharge pipe adding but I cant remember where i have put it!)   The remaining tasks now is to add the walkway to the roof (I have no idea how I will do this.) Along with adding bogies (I have one f

Class 150 Improvements?

Back when the Bachmann 150 was released, I foolishly started thinking about how it could be improved. The plan had three elements, rebuild the chassis of the powered half with a full interior and a black beetle, replace the glazing with a more appropriate level of tint and replace the window frames with the Jim Smith Wright etch.   I made a start cutting off the window frames and fitting the replacement glazing, along with fitting P4 to the unpowered coach. Painted the edges of the etch Reg

ECC TDA Slurry Tank Conversion

Back in 2009 I started work on building a TDA slurry tank, while these were not actually used in Cornwall (instead dedicated to Quidhampton), the other Quidhampton slurry tanks did appear in Cornwall (and I rather liked the prototype.)   The initial stages of the build are covered here, http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=74&start=575 on the old forum.   This is what the prototype should look like https://www.flickr.com/photos/hmillington/2044676492/sizes/o/in/set-721576

47338 Railfreight Distribution

For a long time I have had a non runner Bachmann 57 in virgin livery sat in the to sell pile, last weekend I decided to do something about it. Stuck the virgin body on eBay and bought a shell in railfreight distribution which is much more useful for Wheal Imogen.   Getting back from Sevilla today I’ve made a start on renunbering it to 47338 circa 1998. I started by removing the names and numbers, giving it a soak in microsol before scraping off with a flat screwdriver. New transfers were a

Wheal Imogen 1980s China Clay in P4: Thoughts on a possible Cameo Challenge Entry:

Wheal Imogen: 1980s/1990s China Clay Cameo in P4   Its been a long time since my last exhibition layout, getting close to 10 years since Blackcombe Torr’s first (and only) exhibition. But thoughts have now turned to a replacement.   My main focus is towards a long term project set around South Brent station in 1947 South Devon, but historically most of my modelling was based around Cornwall in the late 80s / late 90s. Reading the rules for the new MRJ “Cameo Layout Challenge” I have been suf
