Yet another 47 - Continued

A little more looking at Class 47s today,   One of the plans I have been considering recently is to rebuild the majority of my Heljan class 47 fleet with Vi Trains bodies, while this does involve a lot of work, it does appear to be the most cost effective method given the very low value the Heljan locos currently have (both due to the release of better models, the fact all couplings have been removed, P4 Chassis and finally in some cases a lack of hand rails...   Now I havent yet been able

Or rather 2 of them..... Having come home from Warley with a Vi Trains 47/4 in Large Logo, I've now gone and added a 47/7 in Res to the fleet. (Ontracks have them on offer at ??47!)   Despite the model having not arrived yet, thats not stopped a bit of a research session to work out what I will end up doing with it. I am going to keep it as 47768 'Resonant' So heres a couple of links to prototype photos. A photo Another Photo 47768 working a FGW daytime loco hualed service   The planne

Yeoman SW1001 project

The start of what is likely to be a very slow build.... While tidying up under the layout last night I came across a very old project respraying what I think was an Athern SW1000 in HO into Foster Yeoman livery as 44 Western Yeoman II that I had completed way back in 2000/2001, a year or so later it was fitted with a DCC decoder which most annoyingly has been lost at some point.   The loco was "finished" with the exception of adding the wasp stripes to the ends, and the buffers (which were

Yeoman PTAs

My first PTA is now finished, awaiting transfers (which will hopefully arrive tomorrow)   The rest still need a 2nd coat of grey paint, the conditions at the moment were very awkward so I only bothered putting the effort in spraying the wagon that I have finished bogies for (the rest can wait to be painted once I have a better conditions!)   Transfers are by Fox, using the sheet intended for PTAs, a sheet of CAIB logos and a sheet of big Y logos intended for POAs. The large Yeoman logo wil

Wheal Imogen 1980s China Clay in P4: Thoughts on a possible Cameo Challenge Entry:

Wheal Imogen: 1980s/1990s China Clay Cameo in P4   Its been a long time since my last exhibition layout, getting close to 10 years since Blackcombe Torr’s first (and only) exhibition. But thoughts have now turned to a replacement.   My main focus is towards a long term project set around South Brent station in 1947 South Devon, but historically most of my modelling was based around Cornwall in the late 80s / late 90s. Reading the rules for the new MRJ “Cameo Layout Challenge” I have been suf

Wessex Trains 150 pt 3

Sorry for yet another post without photos, starting to think spending on a new camera which is slightly better in the dark might be a sensible idea...   I've been back to work on the 150, this time finally starting the renumber. The old numbers came off very easily with microsol to be replaced with fox transfers (anyone know what the numbering sequence is for the bodyside numbers? I know one half of 150232 is numbered 57232 but I dont know the number for the other half (or is it the same?)

Weathering - Attempt number 2......

I touched on this slightly in last nights blog, but I think its probably more deserving to have a post in its own right.   Having picked up a couple of packets of Tamyier weathering 'makeup' type powders yesterday I set about having a play with them on 47768. The idea was to try out 4 different styles which together make up the majority of the weathering I am planning for the moment.   The first was the dark streaks coming down from the roof joints, these took a lot of attempts to get someth

Warley 2009

Had a very busy day at Warley today,   First up the shopping list that seems to be a prerequisite of a post Warley forum posting...   As mentioned elsewhere I've been very good this year, with all but ??16 of my spending coming from the cash I brought with me, and the sales of some etches. Those who know me will probably be amazed   First up was the all important rail for my 2010 challenge layout, 2 packs of Exactoscale FB steel rail. I'd like to thank Exactoscale for the exceptional ser

Warick show and ramblings

Spent today at the Warick show demonstrating on the demu stand.   Didnt manage to get a whole lot of modelling finished (a combination of traders not managing to make it there, and me forgetting to bring stuff) but did have a good day despite it. Impressions of the show was something of a mixed bag, some good layouts (although not really enough of real interest to me other than Almwich), if ICM and Bill Bedford had been there trade would have been 'ok', without them it was only really shawpla

VSOE: Type K Pullmans

Having come up against something of a brick wall with the work on my 1951 U stock, and not having the funds to start buying up the kits for the 1935 D stock, I've gone back to working on the K stock.   As mentioned before this includes 1928 built Parlours Lucille and Zena, kitchen Ione and the 1925 Ibis (rebuilt in '28 to a similar design).   Lucille, Zena and Ione are all converted using the Comet sides, unfortunately though their design they have left off the raised beading (so that the

VSOE: Phoenix and Cygnus

Picking up from this blog post a decade ago (recently refreshed), I have for a long time been working on a model of the VSOE circa 1998.   I have previously converted old Hornby pullmans into the 1928 built stock for Ione, Lucille and Zena, and have Minerva from Hornby's 1927 stock.  (all of which still need a fair bit of work on the chassis, along with finishing.)   I am hoping to get at least a set of 6 coaches completed this year, so time to crack on with the remaining two builds so it can al

VSOE Phoenix pt3 ready for paint

Another evenings work has got Phoenix ready for painting, with the roof modifications completed and new windows temporarily installed.     the roof has a rough coat of Vallejo white to highlight any areas needing more work (it needs another still), matching the Hornby White is proving tricky as it’s an off white colour.  With the whole rake being repainted for consistency that’s not a huge problem.   the windows still need the vents and curtains painting on.   I am goi

With my class 37 respray project now complete, its time to turn attention to the next item to hit the work bench.  There are a couple of painting projects that I have in mind, but they all need multiple airbrush sessions and before I can use it again I need to work out the cause of a major air leak in my compressor.    I am awaiting components to enable work to continue on my next two steam projects, so not a lot that I can do there.  So instead I have turned my attention back to my VS

Virgin XC TSRB

Way back in 2006/7 I converted a Hornby mk3 buffet into a TSFB buffet for a Virgin XC rake, the conversion was fairly straight forward (I used the window frames from a set of Hurst Models etched sides glued into position). At the time I sprayed it into Virgin red, the first coat was a nightmare with really poor coverage, while the second peeled off with the masking. I then made a mess of the transfers (putting the stripes on too low) which caused further damage to the paint on removal.   Havin

Virgin XC Mk2F RFB part 3

Onto the home stretch....   The revised approach for the window blanks was a lot more effective, once covered with filler to blend in the corners it is now almost seamless. After the first filler application it looked as below After which it was given a quick dusting of primer over the dark grey band in order to check on the progress, after which It needed a little more filler but is now pretty much ready for painting. If the weather is warm enough on Monday I will dig out the airbrush, if no

Virgin XC in 1998/99: The Locos

On to the locos for my Virgin XC loco hailed service,   First up 47853, one of only two Heljan class 47s out of what once was a fleet of over ten (the other is in GWT and was my first complete respray). The loco is too late for 1998 being in XP64 livery names Rail Express (whose limited edition this was) the mode has been converted to P4 and has a Shawplan etch for the missing detail on the sides of the cut away buffer beams. Eventually it really needs an extreme etchings roof grill and new

Virgin XC Formation - 1998

Virgin HSTs.

4th January 2010 Going back to the Virgin rake, I have finally finished the renumbering of the powercars. Just need the City of Aberdeen nameplates now, and to convert the roof grills to the other type. Planning to get some wheels for them (hopefully at the Warick show on the 16th), then the final job will be adding the kaydees to the rake.   Starting to think about replacing my converted TRSB with the new Hornby one (depending on how good the model turns out to be.) While the Hornby model

Virgin Cross County loco hauled: improving Hornby Mk2e

My future layout plans call for a rake of Virgin and Intercity mk2 coaches to run with my Virgin Class 47s, while this is primarily aimed for a future exhibition layout (which isn’t planned to cut timber for another 3 or 4 years at best). There is an outside possibility of building some long cassettes and having a play with it on Wheal Imogen however. The formation is going to be formed as follows: Mk2d BSO Virgin (Hornby with an improved chassis and roof ribs removed) Mk2e TSO Virgin (Hornby)

Virgin Cross Country Class 47s

Before I went off on to Tignes on my holls, A package from Hattons arrived containing another cheap Vi Trains 47, this time in Virgin. Given that the Seven Valley Railway name was applied well after the period in which I want to run the loco, I am going to renumber/rename to something which received its name a bit earlier.   Most annoyingly my preferred choice (47817) also received its name too late (1999) which as discussed elsewhere on the forum has resulted in a need to find another loco t

Virgin Cross Country Class 47

Further to my earlier research on Virgin Class 47s I have come to a decision. Having researched photos of the first five locos to gain Virgin livery, I have eliminated any possibility of 4 of the 5 locos retaining Virgin XC logos into 1998 (further discussions with friends who were paying attention to the prototype at the time backs this up).   I did debate just going ahead and doing it anyway, but that would be a dangerous precedent and would no doubt open the floodgates.... As such, I think

Virgin Cross Country 1998 - mk2 RFB part 2

Things are not going completely to plan on the buffet conversion, I had filled the windows and started sanding back, however the finish was nowhere near good enough. While not immediately visible, after filing back the filler there was a slight indent around the filled windows (I expect paint would make it stand out a lot more!) The windows are set just under ten thou back from the sides (slightly less than ten thou at the top and slightly more at the bottom). This deviation sunk my original

Virgin Cross Country 1998 - mk2 RFB

After being woken by the children at a ridiculous hour this morning I decided to make use of the time to do a little pre work modelling. Before I turn attention back to the layouts I want to finish off a quick coach project and get by Virgin Cross Country loco hauled rake finished.   I have modelled one of the shorter formations, with 6 coaches formed BSO, TSO, TSO, TSO,TSO, RFB, working with the Hornby mk2E as a start point. Over time all of the coaches are being modified to remove the fictio

Paint, transfers and a coat of varnish now finished and 47817 is on the home straight.   It just needs to be fitted with a window which was damaged in removal from the body.   The only other task remaining is to fit the handrails to the cab doors, at which point it will be good to go

Yet another old project, this one was started in 2010....   It should have been a simple renumbering job, along with upgrading the roof. The Vi Trains paint had other thoughts however, requiring a repaint to remove the old numbers, the Phoenix Virgin dark grey turned out to be a lot lighter than the model so currently it looks rather odd   Here is the loco taken back in 2010 after the repainting, at which point work stopped.   While looking for a different project I dug this out yes
