47051 Railfreight Distribution

After hearing mention of a spare Bachmann 47 body shell in RFD livery I snapped it up to build as a 2nd loco to run with my other RFD 47 on the Silver Bullets. The plan is a little complicated in that I have got the loco running in its current guise, but it will eventually undergo a major rebuild. 47016 Respray

As is often the case over the summer my motivation to get on with any modelling has rather taken a battering, the loss of the exhibition circuit hasn’t helped given a decent show would normally reinvigorate the modelling mojo. GWML TPO

A little more progress on the TPO last night, with the yellow lines added for one side of each coach. These were very old transfers (looking at the Fox logos on the packet I would say pre 2000 for certain), so I was a little concerned as to how well they would work. GWML TPO

It’s been a long time since they were painted (although I did spray them again a few weeks ago to sort the colour issues). Then bought some transfers from DC Kits, and this evening I made a start on applying them. KWA Engineers Well Wagon

Way back in 2007 I purchased the then new S-Kits kit for a Caib KWA plant carrying well wagon. A fairly simple kit comprising of a resin body (to which you attach the lashing eyes), headstocks and buffers, cast y25 bogies and a set of castings for the loading ramps. Sea Urchins

I have spent the afternoon getting on with a few part built Sea Urchins In all cases transfers still need to be added (I have them for the EWS example, but will need to source for the rest). Class 37s repaints - finished for now

After a lot of work my class 37 resprays are now complete (with the exception of some minor work on the ends of the DRS examples. they will now joint the queue for couplings and weathering, with 37057 taking the priority. There is still an order to Shawplan that needs to be placed for Vikings nameplates and horn grills for 37607. but for now attention will return to other projects, with my second GWT HST set or my Intercity liveried sleeper set both needing to enter the pai

EWS repaints 67003 and 37057 pt2

A little more work on my latest respray projects 37057 has been reunited with its ends and had most of the transfers applied, it’s just missing the ohle warning flashes on the sides (which will get sorted this evening). The transfers were from Railtec for the EW&S logos (along with the ohle flashes) and a fox tops panel. Really impressed with the Railtec product, very easy to use, a much better colour match than Fox and ready made up numbers for your chosen loco.

EWS Painting - 67003 and 37057

Over the past few days I have been getting on with finishing off a couple more projects, spraying locos into EWS livery. first up was 67003 as seen in Newton Abbot in 1999 shortly after delivery. This is a Lima model which has been detailed with my own etches for the grills, window frames and air horn grills. (Along with a fully detailed chassis). 58015 Weathering

Onto the next weathering project, the past few days effort. Again working from a photo from 1998, I have tried to replicate the characteristic build up of oily dirt on the bodyside. The grills had all previously been repainted in the correct grey rather than body colour. Underframe dirt was built up in several layers, along with an oily finish on the fuel tanks / battery boxes. Cab sides and ends were relatively clean, (although I lost the numbers on one side applying a wash).

37672 Weathering

Another day, another weathering project, although this one took somewhat longer than the previous two locos given the number of applications needed. Another Bachmann model hitting the bench almost as it arrived from the shop, With 37672 being a Cornish machine (and not an easy one to renumber due to the cantrail grills) it stayed as 672. The model has so far been fitted with Dingham couplings (and P4 wheels) and was one of the better performers when Wheal Imogen was at last years SWAG members

60026 Weathering

Continuing the theme of a little pre work weathering, here is the current state of 60026. Class 60s are a bit of an oddity with my modelling, a class that I have always really liked, yet one on which I have not yet done a great deal with the models. In fact while my Class 37 fleet only has one loco with its RTR identity (the ltd 37670) and my Class 47 fleet has none, I have never renumbered a Class 60. 37607 continued

A day demonstrating at the Swindon model ex today has seen some more progress on 37607. The air horns have now been removed and the recesses filled (with the horns mounted onto 37612). the flint grey was repainted to the deeper depth (as was the black on the ends). DRS 37607 (and a little more 37612)

Now that work on 37057 has rather ground to a halt, it is time to move on to what should be my final class 37 project (along with some finishing work on another)…. 37057 pt4 (and a bit of 37612)

Last night I dug put the cutter and drew up a few components, adding a new ring (replacing a damaged brass part) for the roof grill on 057, along with some parts for 37612. With these fitted the only thing left is to fit the NRM roof pod, (which I still need to find) and the rivets that will go on post priming. So it was out with the primer. The new ends for 37057 arrived in the post today (thanks again Mark), so I have cracked on with the ends. Representation of the hinges was added from 10 thou evergreen strip (with a raised line of 20thou square.) the same 20thou strip added the joint down the centre line of the door & the hinges either side of the high intensity headlight. 37057 part 2

Work is progressing on 37057 First up a set of Hornby Class 60 style buffers have been found in the scrap box and installed on the damaged chassis, this has now been put aside ready for buffer beam detailing (along with the installation of a Dingham coupling). More Class 37s - 37057 and 37???

VSOE Phoenix pt3 ready for paint

Another evenings work has got Phoenix ready for painting, with the roof modifications completed and new windows temporarily installed. the roof has a rough coat of Vallejo white to highlight any areas needing more work (it needs another still), matching the Hornby White is proving tricky as it’s an off white colour. Bachmann 37 respray 37230 Transrail

VSOE: Phoenix and Cygnus

2019 in Review

The plans for the year were: to finish off the TPO rake, add doors to 37612, convert the remaining CDA fleet, paint the GWT intercity sleeper rake and to build a couple of nuclear flasks to run with the DRS locos. 37403 pt2

On to the second step of the conversion of 37403, as a result of a combination of the temperature, the lack or a paint handle to move the workpiece and very old paint, I did have a few issues with the painting. Notably it was very difficult to get paint to stay in corners / edges of detail. So minor repairs were completed with a brush, (while the wreathing will be focused around these areas so any remaining damaged paint will be obscured by the weathering.)
