37612 in DRS plus almost finished MkF RFB

I have slowly been progressing with my model of 37612. First up the other end has been converted and is now ready for some paint repairs, I have also found the rest of the jumper cables (although they cannot be fitted until the painting is finished and nose numbers have been applied given that one jumper cable goes over the numbers.) With that complete I moved attention back to the body.   The fire control panels were picked out in red (while the buffer beams got another coat of red paint

A little work on 47768 and 37612

I didn’t get nearly as much done as I hoped this evening, however have at least made progress on a couple of long term projects blocking space on the work bench.   First up 47768, it has got to the point that I can’t axxwpt the depot plaques on the cab sides that were removed in 96. So I have removed the etch, sanded down the cab side and repainted. I used Virgin red which was a pretty good match to Vi Trains RES red (and will be perfect once blended in with weathering) I understand they w

Some Lorrie conversions

A while back I converted a Schudo Mercedes lorry into a covered tipper for use on my clay layout, I say converted but at the time I only did half the job. It remained as a 3 axle and has no detail on the rear door.   Last night I set about sorting that, the first job being that missing axle at the front. In order to obtain a suitable part I turned to another Schudo lorry, a Shell tanker, as a 3 axle chassis it was a little to big and long for my intended use (delivering heating oil). So I ha

47768 A start on weathering

Back in 2010 I made a start on improving a Vi Trains model of 47768 in RES livery, it has had my usual treatment being fitted with Extreme Etchings roof grills, Maygib wheels and screw couplings. It has also been fitted with the pipe which runs across the roof grills on some 47s.   Unfortunatly when I painted the new grills area with Phoenix RES grey, it was a completely different shade to the RTR finish, which is where it stayed until last night.   While painting some wagons, I noticed the

A flush sided shark

Another old project that I am trying to finish off (in between lettering GWR wagons) is a Hornby shark in Loadhaul livery. If I remember rightly the prototype Hornby released should have flush sides (else another Loadhaul liveries Shark has flush sides)   The sides were smoothed off with filler and it is now in the process of getting the paint finished off, just needing the orange masking up so I can spray the black once it warms up again.   However as I can’t get P4 wheels into the W iron

Virgin XC in 1998/99: The Locos

On to the locos for my Virgin XC loco hailed service,   First up 47853, one of only two Heljan class 47s out of what once was a fleet of over ten (the other is in GWT and was my first complete respray). The loco is too late for 1998 being in XP64 livery names Rail Express (whose limited edition this was) the mode has been converted to P4 and has a Shawplan etch for the missing detail on the sides of the cut away buffer beams. Eventually it really needs an extreme etchings roof grill and new

A soloution to the Kaydee problem

I have mentioned previously that I have an issue with a lack of Kaydee coupling boxes relative of the number of coupling hooks I have available   I think I have come up with a suitable soloution...   It starts with a length of aluminium rod of a suitable diameter, A hole is drilled in some plasticard the thickness between the floor and the coupling height, the length of rod is epoxied into this hole.   The coupling spring is then glued in place if available (I don’t care about coupling /

Virgin XC Formation - 1998

http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb/car/Mk2/MK2-RFB/1211-10.jpghttp://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb/car/Mk2/MK2-RFB/1211-10.jpgAs an interlude to the work on my mk2F RFB, a little background on the formation in which it will sit.   The standard Virgin XC formation in the late 90s consisted of a BSO, 5 TSO and an RFB, however it was also very common to run a 6 coach set consisting of a BSO, 4 TSO and an RFB and it is one of these that I will be modelling.   To save money I will be using the

Mk2F RFP paint

Today I took advantage of the warm weather to do the majority of the painting on the Mk22 RFB, first priming the buffet area and then spraying the grey.   Typically I have now ran out of masking tape so I can’t do the rest. I might just use a set of fox transfers to add the red stripe and touch up the yellow stripe   My attention to detail is awful at the moment, (in everything not just modelling), I missed adding masking tape to cover the lower coach side     Fortunately it was easy t

Virgin XC Mk2F RFB part 3

Onto the home stretch....   The revised approach for the window blanks was a lot more effective, once covered with filler to blend in the corners it is now almost seamless. After the first filler application it looked as below After which it was given a quick dusting of primer over the dark grey band in order to check on the progress, after which It needed a little more filler but is now pretty much ready for painting. If the weather is warm enough on Monday I will dig out the airbrush, if no

Virgin Cross Country 1998 - mk2 RFB part 2

Things are not going completely to plan on the buffet conversion, I had filled the windows and started sanding back, however the finish was nowhere near good enough. While not immediately visible, after filing back the filler there was a slight indent around the filled windows (I expect paint would make it stand out a lot more!) The windows are set just under ten thou back from the sides (slightly less than ten thou at the top and slightly more at the bottom). This deviation sunk my original

Virgin Cross Country 1998 - mk2 RFB

After being woken by the children at a ridiculous hour this morning I decided to make use of the time to do a little pre work modelling. Before I turn attention back to the layouts I want to finish off a quick coach project and get by Virgin Cross Country loco hauled rake finished.   I have modelled one of the shorter formations, with 6 coaches formed BSO, TSO, TSO, TSO,TSO, RFB, working with the Hornby mk2E as a start point. Over time all of the coaches are being modified to remove the fictio

DRS 20302 and 37612

After a trip to Duxford for a flight in a 1940s Harvard, last night I managed a little work on the 20/3, I have been trying a technique I have used previously for paint repairs. applying a very thick layer of paint, then cutting back with wet & dry to get a smooth finish with the surrounding paint, before applying a thin top coat and varnish to blend together. It worked very well on previous projects which have had paint issues such as my Virgin mk3, so hopefully it will work well here (I

DRS 20302

Having now received the missing stock box I have started looking at the next loco completion project, 20302 in DRS livery   The issue is that I started modellingit in 2006 condition and have now decided I want it in 1998.   So I need to remove the centre headlights, multi working box at the outer end, and respray the roof in grey. I will also need new transfers without the web address.   Hopefully I will get the roof painted on Sunday.

Class 158 detailing pt2: lighting

A little more work on the 158 last night, the WIPACs are now fitted with the area either side painted black. The modified lighting units have also been installed.   I think eventually I will replace with a better lighting set up, but it looks ok for now. There is some light bleed (especially on the yellow lights) however in the flesh it looks no where near as bad as in the photo.   Kaydee No5s were fitted between the coaches, at which point I decided to call it a day for the moment and

Class 158 Detailing

One of the last passenger projects needed for Wheal Imogen is a Class 158 in Regional Railways livery, working a Wales and West Alphaline service from Bristol to Newquay. I have a lot of Class 158 parts, I was in the process of building a Wessex Trains 3 car and 2 car in picture livery which are in bits with silver sides, I also had a P4 Wessex 158 which is now sold freeing up a set of Ultrascales. All not a lot of use for anything I am working on, so the intention was to respray one of the sh

Some Wagon Building: Sea Urchins and Ferry Van

After the computer randomly decided to close the page, try agian.....   Continuing the approach trying to clear out the WIP boxes, a couple more wagons (and a lot of work on the bridge for Wheal Imogen which I will touch on later).   First up was the VIX ferry van, I have removed the working doors, carved off the fictional roof vent and lower brackets for the working doors, carved off the frameing around the end clips, and glued the body to the chassis. I also had to remove circa 1mm from e

Class 50s - Supurb and Elgar

In the process of this weeks tidy up I have managed to finally find the majority of the parts required to finish off 50002. Untitled by The Fatadder, on Flickr At the start, the contents of the storage box (including the missing bodyside door for 50007) So last night I set to work reassembling it, unfortunately in the process I lost most of the orange cantrail stripe along one side (despite a coat of varnish that should have sealed it in). I removed the rest and will paint on a replacement onc

TPO Modelling for 1998

A while back I started work on building a TPO rake, as part of my continued efforts to tidy up old half finished projects I have dug it out to finish off.   Research from when I first started on the project gives details for formations: Penzance > Bristol NFA, NSA, NTA, NSA(t), NFA, NBA, NBA it doesn't specify what the t signifies on the second NSA, but assume it was to do with the large roof pod as it seems to match up with that particular coach). or Plymouth >

TDA into the paint shop

The TDA has now entered the paint shop, ECC blue seems to be spraying well, so hopefully I can spray the black tomorrow. There are some strange looking shadows on the tank from the layout wire above the spray booth...   Starting to come together, br it does still need the hand rails adding...   Edit: now sprayed black along with minor blue paint fixes. Now about those handrails...

31466 almost done

31466 is now almost complete, I have had a few problems with the transfers, first with the orange cantrail lifting off on the cab roofs and then with the 3 in the bodyside number rolling up on itself.   The cantrail stripe will be an easy fix, touching in with some orange paint. the numbers a lot more difficult...   All windows have been refitted, as have the handrails to one end.

37196 - nearing compleation

Work on 37196 is now rapidly approaching completion,   The etched windscreens have now been glued into position. I had planned to fit the glazing first, however in the end I decided against it as a) I couldn’t find one of the lazerglaze parts, and b) I wanted to use superglue to get a quick bond on the etch which would have clouded the glazing.   The use of the replacement etch is a bit too much extra hassle for the gain in looks, not something I plan to do again.   The etched plates a

Almost a Superb Job: 50002 ready for rebuilding

This morning while No 1 Daughter was at a friends house and my wife was at work, I had a couple of hours modelling time while No2 daughter had her morning nap. Of course the sleeping one year old did mean that I was limited to tasks which were not too noisy, preventing a lot of the layout work I would have liked to be working on.   I did however manage to get on with 50002 and 37196 sat outside in the sun. The 37 was relatively minor work, getting its etched Tre Pol & Pen plates glued into

50002 Supurb nearing completion

50022 has now been fitted with the majority of transfers, along with a set of Fox nameplates (bought a very long time ago when the loco was still in revised NSE.   There are still a couple of jobs left before I can reassemble, the black paint did not work well with the masking tape around the windows, so this needs to be touched in by hand. In order to do this I need a new paint brush, so it’s waiting an amazon delivery. I also managed to damage the roof grill putting the body on, I didn’t

31466 and 37196 transfers applied

Both locos have now had their transfers applied, again using 10 year old fox transfers which are loosing their stick meaning a lot of wastage. I was pleasantly surprised as to how well the two part transfer for the 3 beasties worked.   The 31 needs the cantrail line adding, plus a repair to the gold stripe and the black grills painting.   The 37 needs a touch up to the grey on the cab roofs, painting and fitting the black windscreen etch (I’m tempted to glaze before fitting as well), touch
