Part 2: Wagon Miscellany. Including BR/WR/GWR ballast wagons x 3.

Bit of an update on the wagon building miscellany.    The Three Peaks Models, Lancashire & Yorkshire Low Goods Wagons are coming on well. I must say how pleased I am with these kits.    Following on from reading Jonathan's West End Workbench, I decided to drill out the axle boxes to receive Alan Gibson brass bearings.         One is finished in BR unfitted grey. The other is in late LMS livery. Sole bars are to be painted brown on th

Part 2: Can we borrow your Pug please? Detailing a Hornby Lanchashire & Yorkshire Pug. Modelling a Wellingborough 15A visitor on a removal job....

Over the Festive period I have managed to almost finish a number of current projects. More in the next few entries on these.    Yesterday I fired up the airbrush and started the weathering on 51235. This is a model of the  Derby L&Y Pug borrowed by Wellingborough shed to help move some equipment from Finedon Ironstone Quarry in the 1950's.   Trusty Tamiya acrylics were airbrushed on. Satin black on the top the saddle tank and a mix of NATO Black\Brown for underframe dirt.

Part 1: Can we borrow your Pug please? Detailing a Hornby Lanchashire & Yorkshire Pug. Modelling a Wellingborough 15A visitor on a removal job....

Now if you have a large piece of equipment to move you need to borrow a Pug no less.    According to Tonks in his Ironstone Quarries of the Midlands-Wellingborough Area book this was the case in the early 1950's when Wellingborough 15A borrowed a Derby 17A Pug to help move machinery from Finedon Ironstone Quarry to the Wellingborough exchange sidings for onward transfer to Blisworth Quarry near Northampton.    Due to the RTB Finedon Quarry system no longer having motive power

Oxford Rail Weathered 7 Plank ex-Private Owner Wagons

I'm a real fan of the Oxford Rail 7 Plank RCH wagon. I realise it's not perfect but it is has a number of merits including price.   I've a few of these including a couple I've weathered for my 1947 Teign Valley project. Some of them where bought with a view to repainting them into scruffy 1950's/1960's BR ex-private owner wagons. Paul Marshall Potter (PMP) on his excellent Albion Yard blog wrote an article on converting them to this state.   https://albionyard.wordpress.com/2016/03/16/nine-

Oxford Rail J27. Finished as Percy Main's 65802.

The Oxford Rail J27 is an excellent model and something of a bargain to boot.   I picked up an Early Crest example when they first appeared. It ran smoothly and had no problems when running in.    Looking through The Last Years of  North Eastern Steam by Tuffrey I found a suitable prototype to model in the form of 65802 of Percy Main shed photographed at Blaydon in fairly clean condition.   I wonder whether Oxford Rail will offer versions with modified boiler domes

Motive Power for Juniper Hill-A micro layout based around a Northamptonshire ironstone quarry line

Evening,   After my 009 diversional therapy (see previous entry) I thought I better get back to the micro-layout I'm building called Juniper Hill (JH) which is based on the ironstone quarry lines of Northamptonshire around Kettering/Corby.   I really need to get in the garage and start the track laying and wiring. Once this is done I can at least start playing trains   However, there were a few bits on the workbench to finish including these two locos that will form part of the motive pow

Manors Maketh Man......

As some of you may know (gwrrob in particular) I'm a real fan of the GWR 78xx Manor Class and often request a photo of 7804 at work on ANTB.   Several years ago I had a go at detailing two of these Bachmann models which date back to prehistoric times Mainline days. In fairness Bachmann did give them one of their new split chassis back in the 1990's but these are prone to axle problems.   When I detailed my brace I modelled 7802 Bradley Manor and 7807 Compton Manor. Later on I sold 7807 which

Manning-Wardle 'H' Class. Part 3 of a Pug Bash

Over the past few days I've managed to get the component parts together and we're now at this stage.     I painted the inside of the cab before assembly with a Revell green acrylic applying washes and dry brushes to finish. This was masked off with tissue paper when I sprayed the loco.     As you can see various bits of wire have been used for detailing along with parts from the Pug including the reversing lever. One thing I did do is remove the sandboxes from the chassis. Luckily i

Manning Wardle 'H' Class. Part 2 of a Pug bash.

Managed to do a few more bits on the 'H' Class over the past few days including fitting the cut section of tubing under the saddle tank to represent the boiler. Thank's to Ruston's measurements of his Ixion 7mm version I was able to work out a rough figure for the depth between the bottom of the saddle tank and the running plate. The photos below show the model held together once more with Blu-tac.       Thankfully, I managed to make up the smokebox door straps fairly successfully with M

Manning Wardle 'H' Class. Or a Pug Bash. Part 1

Last year in the August edition of Hornby Magazine Phil Parker converted an Hornby Lancashire and Yorkshire 'Pug' into a resemblance of a Manning Wardle 'H' Class. I thought this would be a nice little conversion to undertake that I could use on my layout Juniper Hill based on a Northamptonshire ironstone line. It could also be used on my proposed Teign Valley project as well.   Here's the link to Phil's website with plans and pictures of his completed model:   http://pagenumberone.co.uk/dow

Maintaining a Standard...Hornby Railroad 9F detailing..

The venerable Hornby 9F has quite a provenance as we all know. Obviously the announcement of a new model brings the story up to date.    A couple of years ago I purchased a loco drive Hornby Railroad 9F.   Looking through my well thumbed copy of Steam Railways In Colour Around Northamptonshire by Coleman & Rajczonek I found a photograph of 92231 hard at work at Desborough in 1965. At this time the locomotive was allocated to York.    The Hornby model captures th

London Transport Sentinel Tender by CDC Designs

Recently Hornby have released their 6 wheeled Sentinel in the guise of L81 which represents the first of three Sentinel's acquired second hand to replace the venerable LT Pannier tanks.     Unfortunately with the prototypes their wheelbase was insufficient to operate track circuits on the main line. To address this a tender was attached fitted with a trip cock.      The tenders were manufactured from 'Q' stock bogies. The tender and Sentinel carried co

LNER/BR B17/6 61633 Kimbolton Castle

I'm not normally an Eastern Region modeller although a few classes do stand out. The big Pacifics don't interest me as such and it's the more humble classes like a J15 that appeal to me more. One class that I've always thought had really graceful lines was Gresley's LNER B17 with a short GE tender.   Earlier on in the year I brought a BR version and I really must say this is a beautiful model that Hornby have produced and captures the protype welll. It doesn't have the robustness of a Bachm

Lima LMS 42 ft CCT.

Inspired recently by Alex (Wiggoforgold) and Dave (Max Stafford) I thought I have a go myself at modifying one of these CCT's using Bachmann LMS bogies as a replacement for the incorrect BR ones that Lima fitted.   The moulding is trypical Lima and is quite fine. Even the undeframe is reasonably detailed.I manged to strip off the paint using Mr Muscle oven cleaner. Moulded handrails were cut off, as well as the roof vents and buffers.   Paul Bartlett's site came up with a suitable victim t

Juniper Hill Stock. Stewarts & Lloyds wagons and a visiting Pug

A good friend of mine in his 70's who worked on the railways told me of a story where a L & Y Pug was brought down from Derby to take a large piece of equipment up one of the ironstone quarry lines around Wellinborough. The rationale being that it's short wheelbase would be suitable for the job and once completed the loco was returned to Derby shed.   In homage to this story I've taken a few shots of my Pug which isn't Derby allocated I know.   One of the reasons for these photos is to i

Juniper Hill Road Vehicles

Before I start thanks to Andy Y for his words of wisdom re: altering image sizes. I wish I'd have asked earlier!   This is my first entry for a while now. I've been working on bits for Juniper Hill, my layout based around the ironstone lines of East Northamptonshire. Hopefully, with the spring coming-believe it or not I hope to get into the garage for some track laying and soldering.   Fred the bus driver has known Doris his conductress for a number of years now. Doris had started working fo

Juniper Hill

As some of you may be aware Juniper Hill lays of the A43 south of Brackley-unfortunately this entry has no relevance to this Oxfordshire village. I drive down the A43 to Oxford on a regular basis and pass the sign for Juniper Hill and am always enchanted by the name. Infact I've decided to call my latest project after the village although it's not set in Oxfordshire.   Infact it is set no where in particular and could almost be generic. Ideas have centred around ironstone quarrying in Northam

Ivatt Rescue Part 3. A tale of an eBay resurrection. Oban Cambridge Blue

After a few months my unlined 46468 is now ready for service.   Using the photograph I was made aware of by Jamie of this parish in the previous entry it would appear the engine was in a fairly clean condition. Here's the photo:   https://www.transporttreasury.com/p814816928/hbce61ac6   As a prototype it is quiet a useful engine as it covers two areas of interest.      46468 was originally a Cambridge 31A example so would more than likely worke

Ivatt Rescue Part 2. A tale of an eBay resurrection..

This morning our Postie delivered a small package from the Bachmann Spares Department. Excellent service as ever.     Inside was the new tender chassis and coupling mounting block highlighted as damaged in the previous post.    Armed with a mug of Yorkshire Gold in a suitable receptacle with an Ivatt 2MT on it I set to work...        The smokebox door handle was replaced with a new brass Eileen's Emporium example. This was sprayed

Ivatt Rescue Part 1. A tale of an eBay resurrection..

We all need a another project to keep the modelling workbench busy don't we? Well in my case probably not..    However a perusal of eBay found a sorry looking LMS Ivatt 2MT described in 'As new condition'. My collection of Ivatt's never resembled the photos but I thought it was worth a punt for a cheap project.   On top of this I had a spare Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 detailing pack to help things along the way.    My 'As New' Ivatt arrived safely and here are some photos. Ivatt Interlude...A Darlington built 2-6-0 example..

Good evening...   Well progress on Ivatt based projects continues.   Recently I've been lucky enough to pick up a few mint used Ivatt's in LMS livery around the £35-40 mark off off a well known auction site . I've three on the work bench at present which will become Kettering and Darlington lined examples respectively and Cambridge's 46466 which is another Darlington built prototype in late 1950's-early 1960's unlined black with late crest when allocated to 31A..   Unlike the initial Crewe

Ivatt Interlude.... Detailing the revised Bachmann Ivatt 2-6-2

Bachmann recently gave us a revised model of their Ivatt 2-6-2 tank with a new DCC ready chassis. Other than the dome on the body no further changes were made sadly. A good friend bought one to put the new chassis under an old body I'd previously renumbered. I thought I could add a few enhancements to the spare new body by adding a new chimney and a few other tweaks.   I had a 247 Developments Ivatt chimney in my spares box so cut off the old Bachmann effort and glued on the new one. New lamp

It's fun to stay at the MCV....1970's Retro. Dapol 16T mineral wagons almost finished.. .

Over the past few days I've been able to almost complete the four Dapol 16T mineral wagons I've been working on.    If you remember I had removed the top doors from two of them in my earlier blog entry. Since then they were finished with Tamiya NATO brown and black.    Then using prototype photos from Paul Bartlett's excellent site I have been able to weather the quartet.      I have used my usual Vallejo acrylics for weathering. Dry brushing has given t

In a Manor of speaking...Dapol 78xxx Manor Class detailing.

Some of you may know that the GWR 78xx Manor Class is one of my favourite engine designs.   Perhaps this comes from the Mainline model of the 1980's and seeing 7808 Cookham Manor at Didcot as a teenager.   Believe it or not I never owned a Mainline version. Just the reblown Bachmann version with updated chassis.    I remember trying to detail and renumber these as well as putting a correct profile chimney on them. Infact gwrrob of this parish and ANTB fame may have

Images from Brian's posh shunting board

Evening,   Been very quiet of late, mainly due to a course I'm doing.   Have managed to do some modelling (hopefully some updates soon) and am getting into the swing of things again.   However, a group of us meet at Brian's for a running session once aweek. He happens to have a very posh shunting plank in a spare room.   Being an ex-Wellingborough (15A) fireman there is obviously a BR Midland theme though anything goes as long as it's steam. The only diesels seen on the plank have be
