Who said I couldn't do it in time for Blyth?!

Well I did really... But I managed to surpass even my own expectations and got my breakdown train finished!   and here's the results.         About three generations of Hornby Railways are combined in this one train... plus a Bachmann J39.   All of the train (save the 12t van) have been heavily modified in some way or another.   I'm currently waiting to see it;s first proper useage at Railex NE at Blyth. If you're around, please don't hesitate to say hi.

What's in a name?

I have come to a rather interesting decision recently and I have decided to name all my running trains.   Now this will really just apply to engines without any prototypical names (those I have included but shall be named after a particular prototype!). This also names I won’t be doing any nameplates. In all honestly it’s just a bit of harmless humour (I hope) whilst trying to engage my friends, partner and the general public into the hobby without boring them to death with technical spea

Weathering, slapping paint on randomly and the dredded power lube of fail :(

Continuing my weathering practise I took the plunge and decided to do my first ever locomotive! And was very please with my first time results… until I cracked open the power lube and this ended in me accidentally coating the loco in this stuff after cleaning up the mess I caused whilst trying to free up the valve gear.     The story is I spilt it and afterwards absently maidenly picked up the loco and tender… whoops! What followed was a wipe down with baby wipes that left the loc loo

WD-40

Well I'm back again   This time I have this wonderful Bachmann WD limited Edition based on the one at the KWVR.     I have to make sure I do treat this one with the respect it deserve, no unecessary...     OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!   Yeah, I didn't want a KWVR loco! I'm doing North Eastern Locos! This loco will eventually be Stockton Based 90155.     I have so far carried out the following. Replacment smoke box darts.   Lubricators piping and water feed piping from 5 amp

Twirly thing!

... as my girlfriend calls it!   anyway Sorry, I've been really busy at the moment and even now, I'm readying myself for a three night comedy show. I'll blatently plug it too, again. http://www.facebook....57209164384831/     But as well as the match truck, I've been budy with a club project. A Peco OO gauge turntable, anyway, this had been built up and mechanised long before I came to the club and what with the old layout taking priority it remained missing for upwards of 5 years.

Tramthing

So, I've managed to get the paint work done on the tram. As I've decided to devise my own railway for it, I took some personal liberties such as the purple motif on the side skirts.       The lining is far from the best, but I used what I had to hand, a white gel pen which I've used on larger projects such as the 16mm scale wagons. But, it'll do and show what can be done with materials I had to hand.   I wanted to pt the name of the railway but I couldn't find my gold gel pen so instea

Too much play...

Well so far, I now have three wagons for my 16mm scale project. All in mostly finished condition.   The models were primed with some not to be use wilkos cheap primer. The several coats of humbrol borwn and grey followed by a coat of ronseal satin varnish!         The lettering was done with a white gen pen with the larger lettering finished off with revell matt white.   The tarpaulin is baking foil which will be painted, possibly green or matty black.   Most of the descriptive

Toby's Sylvian Cousin.

I love trains and model railways and can genuinely now say I cover all of the main gauges in British railway modelling. How did I achieve this - by being given an O Gauge Y6/J70 tram locomotive. I am genuinely not sure if it's a kit or scratch build or scratch aid kit or what. it was built, and it seems to have been built okay if a little dated. There was some work towards making a chassis for it but I was given a Lima motor bogie which works and will fit on to the body with some work.   Anyw

The march towards completion continues!

Well yet again, I'm busy modelling, amonsgt others things (working and writing) but I've now managed to complete my brake van and van kits, all are currnetly in the process of being weathered now which you shall see the finite product once complete, but whilst you wait... take a look at them "sort of" done!   the brake van if can recall was an old mainline/Bachmann wagon             Please do tell me what you think so far?

Thats, progress, that's progress, that's progress, I'd rather have progress then no-gress... or something

So here I am again… writing a new blog, thinking of things to say about what I’ve done. At the moment I totally shattered from work. But I felt as though I should share with you that I’ve finished two of the train I’m planning to exhibit on our club layout “Hartburn Junctionâ€.   Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the full rakes… d’oh! Anyway I’ll start with the coal train. As you may remember they were made up of a variety of models both RTR and kits. I’ve finally

Sulphate train complete

Merry Christmas folks.   Just an update to show my new complete sulphate train.   I honestly don't know how accurate it is so I suspect it's not that accurate but reference pictures were a nightmare to find... or non-existent. So I did my best anyway.         Nothing is perfectly but for the moment, I'm happy with the outcome.   For a more indepth look, along with extra added frustrations on life... please follow the link http://sylviantennant.blogspot.co.uk/

Spring Time for...

...oh I forget his name.   But what I have remembered is I forget to try and not be funny. Then end up not being funny, tragic really.   In other news I have been modelling, alot of modelling to be done in preparation of our next long anticipated exhibition at Middlesbrough within the fortnight.   So, understably I have been rather busy.   First up are some little bits for the layout which included updating this fine beast of a water crane, originally of Hornby decent and now looking mor

Spaceship ready to launch!

Well it's all done now. Totally updated Hornby Railroad 9F. Practically complete. Only a couple of touch ups needed where I've glued things after I've painted.                     Weathering is the same as the Ivatt, including Red frames.     As I plan to try and give a bit of individual character to all my locomotive stock. I'm going to try and have the crew doing different things. This time the fireman is enjoying the the wind in his face whilst the driver calls

Some final bits of test weathering before I crack on with the important stuff!

I assure you guys that some revenune earning stock will be put up on my blogs soon but in order to just amke sure I'm not going down a deep dark alley of despair I just needed to practise. This time I though that instead of just weather bits ofa knackered wagons, that I'd do several whole wagons to see what the techniques I've learned can achieve.   So here goes...     I used some old and by todays standards some crappy Hornby wagons... two steel 21t representatives from those 5+ year old

Rubber Duck Part 2

So finally I have gotten round to finishing (I beleive) the add on work to my Mucky Duck (or Rubber Duck as my partner beleives them to be called!).   In addition to the things I described in my previous blog. I have since lowered the central spring on the pony truck (and not replaced wth coiled copper wire it as I felt it look adequate enough once it had been lowered). Added stop cocks to the heating pipes. I have replaced the flimsy bended rod going to the cab with brass rod and finally open

Recent updates!

Well, I'm going to test out my Ivatt tonight before painting those bits and pieces. I really need some HMRS tranfers to get her initally completed so I can start weatherting!   Anyway whilst you wait for the finish line. Here are some updates.   Firstly. I have been asked to weather a tatty old (and rechassised) 66xx for a friend of mine. In the end I figured a total repaint was necessary. I think I was justified. Now to touch up the paint work get those numbers painted (and a new sets of to

Railroad 9F... and other things!

I have been a bit quiet lately mainly due to work and girlfriend related activities and I have not been doing much. In all honestly I have been investigating other scales and need a bit of a changed from my general OO stuff. As well as this, my work commitment, my girlfriend and my other interests need some time as well.   So I’ve been looking at what I need to get done 4mm scale wise and what can be left for another time. Namely my passenger stuff and most of my other engines. However I hav

Progress is beautiful

Right so here I am again, tlaking about the J39.   I decided that in keeping with all of my other modified locos the front coupling hook needed to be replaced with some brass wire, to necessitate this I sawed off the mount and reattached the steam heating pipe to the buffer beam sealing in with cyno-glue.       I also added some steam injector/ejector pipes to the underside of the footplate as per some refercne photographs I have seen. I find that although I'm not making an absolute scal

Peking Duck

Just a few further updates on “Colin” my Area 51 Mucky Duck.   She has now painted up and look fairly complete is a little tatty around the edges. The pony truck and coupling was a humbrol 98 & humbrol 33 that was going spare. The rest os humbrol primor (1) and humbrol 33. The buffer steps were humbro 60. I've also given the smoke box door a coat of humbrol Matt cote to protect the transfers when it comes to weathering.       I’ve (at great frustration) added a smoke box number usi

Painting! Weathering...messing up!

Luckily I have it was al just bits and pieces that I was messing around with! but I would like to show you the fruits of my labour and also gather some tips and creative criticism. (I don't want, "that looks like a bag of s***e", I want, "That looks like a bag of s***e but here's how you could improve...")   Anyway....   First of all, I began by trying out some wood effect on a knackered old Dapol Brake Van.       This was done using Tamiya Acrylics   The base colour was Deck Tan,

Onwards with the J39

Just to keep you up dated at this moment in time in regards to my J39 from Bachmann.   I have added doors to the tender as they were there in the drawings I've seen. As you can see I have made one set of doors open, hopefully you'll see as you why later.     I have carved the moulded handle off the smoke box door and replaced it with brass wire. This was a little tricky but is it do-able. I have also given the locomotive a steam heating pipe and added the sand pipes too. In all there appe

Oil tanks finished, finally?

Right so finally, (I hope) my tanker train is ready to roll. I was a bit annoyed with some of the older club members when I first brought my tanker train which at the time was complete. I had spent alot of hard work and time into getting them ready. I will admit to using the same wheels as the kits which was a mistake since they didn't go well with the smp track. But I felt that their critisam wasn't very constructive unlike other memebers whyo were happy to dish out advice. Anyway, b****y rant
