It's a Harz Life, or, A Day Out on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen

Morning, everyone!   Understanding that German steam locos and narrow gauge are subjects keenly followed by numerous RMwebbers, I wouldn't dare withhold a couple of photos which I took on a day trip to the HSB narrow gauge railway yesterday, which my wife has given me/us for my birthday. I probably don't need to say that much about the 1,000 mm gauge network in the Harz Mountains which has been operated by Harzer Schmalspurbahnen since 1 February, 1993. Consisting of the Cross Harz Railway ("

The Photos Of Yesterday I Don't Want To Forget!

Morning again!   Aside from the assortment of infrastructure photos in my earlier blog entry, I also took these on my photo round yesterday...       In the Friday afternoon peak hour rush, 1348 "Hänichen" and company roll across the Goerdelerring intersection on a Line 4 turn for Stötteritz...       ?…immediately followed by 1210 "Dortmund" on Line 15.       The next signal cycle from the Ring Road allowed 2128, 2146 and trailer 904 on Line 1 to emerge from Goerdelerring, whi

Illustrations of German tram infrastructure and signals – Part 1

Evening all!   On a photo round I went on today, I devoted some of the time to capturing a few examples of typical tram signals, which I'd also like to follow up with additional sets of examples at later dates as I get to gather them.   But I won't let you jump in at the deep end and would thus like to first provide a few introductory paragraphs!   German trams most commonly run under what could be called visual operating conditions, meaning that cars proceed on sight from one signal to th

Time for Plattenbau!

Afternoon, everyone…   As you will see, I did not just leave it at merely thinking about hitting the rails with my camera! (Yes, both it and the rails are still in one piece, just to preempt any possible punning… ) I but will admit that the "Plattenbau" housing blocks suggested by the title will not be the single dominant topic, actually.   I first rode out to the sizeable reversing loop at Paunsdorf-Nord in the east of Leipzig. The loop itself, set such that it connects both to Line 8 and

Rail and Rail Replacement

Afternoon all (just!)   Today's posting will most certainly highlight the fact that I as a railfan can indeed derive satisfaction from situations which I suppose will be terribly nerve-wracking for John Every-Passenger, and that trams are far from being inflexible!   Engineering work carried out on Georg-Schumann-Straße this week means that until and including 10 April, a fairly intriguing replacement service arrangement had to be set up. Line 11 trams are rerouted to the Line 4 terminus at

The Day of Detours

Afternoon all!   Came up with a suitably catchy headline only in the middle of writing the below travelogue, so since I initially posted it on ERs, I should now like to regale the rest of the RMweb community with an interest in trams as well!   First leg of my round this morning was to the terminus of Line 1 at Lausen, travelling through tue boroughs of Schleußig, along the border of Plagwitz and Kleinzschocher, and through the "Plattenbau" parts of Grünau.       On weekdays, every sec

The Tram Photos of March: Filling some blank spots

Afternoon all...   I noticed I missed cross-posting a number of additional tram photos from this and last week onto this-here blog… So, here goes!   13 March   I felt like refreshing my route knowledge in the southern areas of the city, so I focused my attention on the Lößnig branch, served by Lines 10 and 16. As the Leipzig Book Fair was open for visitors, that also included the short turns designated Line 16E in the down direction to Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, and normally as Line 16 wh

(A) Streetcar (Named) Desire

Afternoon all!   Posted the following on Early Risers a few minutes ago, but wouldn't want to keep this set of photos from the rest of RMweb, of course.   I hadn't been able to pay that much attention to trams recently – any part of railfanning, actually – but even so, I was thinking of a couple of spots I might like to revisit now that I have some unexpected time… Forecast predicted increasing cloud cover by about noon and rain to become likely by the afternoon, so I first decided to ride d

Where Red and White Trains Rest: Open day at Leipzig ICE workshops, 19 Nov 14

Morning all!   It's been a bank holiday out here yesterday, and I felt like for me, the best way of spending it was to pay a visit to the ICE workshops where an open day was held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the facility's opening. I took a lot of photos and not strictly in order of stations, so I think regrouping them into thematic "blocklets" might be best for you to keep track of everything.   The workshops are located a few hundred metres north of Leipzig Central Station off Rac

Remedial Railfanning Rounds

Afternoon all…   Having been more or less poorly for some weeks but now finding myself on the mend, I do think the fact of having been able to do some railway photography and thereby catch some sunlight and fresh air recently did contribute on my feeling much better by now. That is to say that both last Friday and this morning, I spent some hours at my favourite freight spotting location at Thekla Station, now enabling me to post another round of images for your delectation!   Friday, 14 Nov

Spotting in Dreich Conditions

Afternoon, everyone…   In spite of the unappealing weather that's come across Saxony today, I felt like trying to shoot another couple of photos in order to recover much needed strength. My offering for today but is something of a mixed bag of railway and tram images as poor lighting conditions weren't terribly suitable for my usual freight spotting location at Thekla.       ?At Bayerischer Bahnhof, the southernmost stop on the Leipzig trunk line tunnel, 1442 104 was taking on passengers

The Spottings of Autumn in the Saxon Lands

Afternoon all...   While I am still recovering, I keep telling myself that spending time outside and for things which to people like us on here will most certainly be highly agreeable. Consequently, I again have a series of photos from two spotting rounds to my favourite freight spotting location at Thekla Station which I have been on yesterday and today.       Yesterday, rail traffic was still in the middle of getting under way after the large scale strike of last week, also necessitati

The Different Faces of Autumn – Spotting results Of October and November 2014

Afternoon all…   In today's post, I'd like to present you with the trawl of two different photo rounds which I did on 27 October in glorious autumnal sunshine, and today under an equally autumnal cloud ceiling. You will be seeing both railway and public transport photos, with the former having been taken at Thekla Station, one of my favourite venues for spotting freight services.       On 27 October, SBB Cargo's Re 421 390 was the first to roll in from the east, heading a container servi

A Case of Capital Ferrophilia

Morning all...   As I let on elsewhere, we went on a little day trip to Berlin yesterday, where I was able to do some (to me) urgent catching-up on what's been going on in the local public transport scene since my last visit. That had been in 2004, actually, so my personal goal was capturing some impressions from suburban and underground operations in the capital. Knowing full well that I wouldn't be able to really see it all within just one day!   Having disembarked from ICE 1724 on the und

Across the English Channel

Afternoon all!   Last week, me and SWMBO spent a couple of days in London, and while railway stuff didn't constitute the main reason for our trip, I did reserve some time for spotting!   And, in fact, we had deliberately chosen the "slow" way for the inbound trip, going by train all the way. Specifically, our itinerary looked as follows:   IC 2430 for Emden – Leipzig Central Station to Hanover Central Station, calling at Halle, Köthen, Magdeburg, Helmstedt and Braunschweig   ICE 650 for

The Freight of Spring

Afternoon all!   Glorious sunshine out here in Saxony, so I spontaneously decided in favour of a little photo tour to my current favourite location at Thekla. Which I might say up front was well worth the effort!       First off, let me showcase ITL's 285 108 heading a rake of chemical tankers. Having seen the passenger variant of the diesel-electric Bombardier TRAXX, called class 246, before, this was my first sighting of the freight version.       In somewhat adverse lighting con

Braving the Weather

Afternoon all!   As the morning progressed, the weather became a bit unstable, just as you'd expect in April. I but didn't let that stop me and tried to make the best of what sunlight had been there...       You'll know the place by now, I suppose! – Having spotted this train from the suburban I had been riding on, my first capture for the day was 185 556 of MRCE, which I understand is on lease to CFL Cargo at this time. With a tank train up back, it crossed over to the Cottbus bypass.

Give us today our daily freight...

Afternoon all (again) ...   I seem to be addicted to a certain station these days and I suspect it may have to do with there being so many occasions for spotting freight trains...so once again, here's a cross-section of what you can typically encounter on German tracks today...       It's been only yesterday that I mentioned how I had to let 120 132 escape unphotographed. However, that same loco provided the first high note of my photo round this morning when it returned and headed the w

Loco portraits and some other assorted stuff

Afternoon all!   Let's keep this prologue brief this time... After the day had begun somewhat hazy, the sun burned through as the morning passed and prompted me to capture another set of photos at my current favourite location, Thekla Station.     First up, I took this portrait of 1442 115 as it idled on Platform 2 standing by to work the S 37433 S 4 line service to Geithain...       ...followed by this overview with the signal box to the left.     Next, 155 244 slowed to a ha

"This is the day of the positioning moves and freight trains / This is the long distance call..."

Something like that anyway...   Well, following my successful trawl at Thekla Station yesterday, I decided to make good use of the wonderful weather we're having once again, and revisit the same location for another set of images. You will find my catch right below...       It's been a while for me to spot a 151! Here, 151 036 was heading east with a string of four-wheel hoppers.       The first positioning move I witnessed was 145 010...       ...soon followed by Pressnitzta

Rolling Thunder

Afternoon all...   While our local weather has become somewhat April-like ahead of time, it's been fair enough for me to decide to spend some time capturing freights at Thekla Station – still my favourite spot for doing so within Leipzig.       While it's not really possible to take good photos of these trains on the suburban level of Leipzig Central Station, let me just offer you this snapshot of ICE 1745 to Dresden. I forgot to take down the unit number, but it was one of those class

Photography for Recovery

Hello again!   As we're having splendid weather today, I elected to pack my camera once again and make another step towards recovery by way of another photo round. Today, I decided to have a look at the construction site on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße south of Leipzig's centre. This street is one of the more important traffic lanes in the south of the city, and is currently undergoing extensive renovation works including the road top, tram tracks, as well as the sewage and public water supply grid.

Therapeutic Photography

Afternoon all...   Weather turned a bit for the worse over the weekend, but rather than locking myself up at home, I thought it'd be better for me to catch some fresh air, and to capture some early-spring impressions...   For starters, I stopped by at Westplatz where from today till 27 April, tram lines 3, 4, 7, 8 and 15 are re-routed due to road work on Jahnallee.     This "Großzug" led by T4D-M car 2175 had travelled down Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and was about to proceed across the West

Criss-Crossing the City

Evening all!   Having been taken off work for the time being in order to preserve my health, I thought that making use of the wonderful weather we were having today and taking time for my personal interests for starters might be a good start towards recovering dearly needed strength...     This set of Tatra T4D-M cars 2144, 2179 and NB4 trailer 909 got a broadside of morning sunlight at the Forsthaus stop, just prior to the 7 line's terminus at Böhlitz-Ehrenberg in the northwest of the ci

A Case of Nocturnal Ferrophilia

Morning all!   I hadn't really been able to do a lot of spotting since our move to Leipzig, but last night, I packed my camera and tripod and set out to capture what I expected to be a multitude of impressions from railway and tram operations in Leipzig on a Sunday. – So, here you go...     A surprise catch at Central Station delighted me so much that I am going to show it twice:     115 205 of DB AutoZug had brought a stock positioning service to Leipzig. While a shunter removed said
