GWR Coach Painting: Complete

After another long painting session last night I have now finished the painting on my Centenary rake, the H33 and H26 resturants, and the A20 First (although on the latter I was not paying attention to what I was doing and forgot to paint one end!) The majority still need underframe weathering and they all need lining and numbers etc, but the project is certainly on the home stretch now. One aim to achieve over the winter is to get these coaches complete (with couplings fitted) to ena

PDK 4707 part 9

For the latest update I have managed a fair bit of progress, more or less getting back on track with the build.   The first task was to get the tender parts washed in CIF and then sprayed with etch primer, this will mean that at the very least the black can be sprayed on the chassis tonight (as can the green if I make it to Halfords after work.) Most annoyingly the masking tape fell off the buffers mid spray, so they have now been ceased up with grey paint! (I know I could have removed the

County chassis continued

Moving on to the clyinders, the initial assembly was very straight forward, although rather let down by the ridiculous amount of filing needed to get the cross head to slide   Once I got the first Half moving I realised that I’ve cut the rod too short. What I don’t understand is that with the crank pin at the furthest point towards the cab, the cross head is 3mm or so off the slide-bars. Everything was assembled as per the instructions so I can’t jnderstand what I’ve done wrong. I will lo

Centenary First Conversion

While I wait for the Romford screwdriver and crank pins needed to finish my County, I have gone back to working on my Cornish Riveria Express project.   Having already built two thirds and a left hand brake, etched have now arrived for the restaurant pair along with the composite. The latter is being converted as I feel it will be a lot quicker to replace the whole side than to just add the new window frames.   Work has started on the more complicated build for the restaurant First, mostly

GWR Modified Hall Pt6: Finishing the chassis

As it is still far too hot to go in the garage and work on Brent, I am getting on with finishing off the Modified Hall.   The first task tonight was to modify the front end of the chassis block in order to provide clearance for newly fitted step down in the front footplate. The Brassmasters instructions suggest using a hacksaw, that sounded far too much like hard work in this heat so I cracked out the Dremel which made short work of it.     While working on the chassis I also completed

Toplight pt2

A little more work on the toplight, the chassis has been thickened up with a laminate of 20thou plasticard which sits inside the bodyshell. The slaters headstock was glued in place along with comet buffers. The coach I am working from has L section trussing so this was added from some much shortened dc kits parts.   Bogies (9ft fish-belly) were from my scrap box (kays I think)   Next up roof detailing, needing the toilet panels adding along with roof vents.   All in all I am still not

Rebranding Hall, King, 72xx and WD pt2

Onto the second stage of the renumberinf project, as previously mentioned shifting the original logos was a lot harder than expected. Some varnish and weathering will be needed to finish it off.   With the original logos removed it was time to replace with HMRS transfers for the new logos. At this point I realised I had forgotten to remove the buffer beam numbers (so out with the Microsol again... While I was at it I also remembered the crest is in a different place on a Great crest Western

Slaters Toplight Third

Modelling the right mix of different coach diagrams is key to modelling the GWR, as such I have long planned to add some Toplight coaches to the fleet.   The demise of the Slatters range put something of a spanner in the works, compounded by the high cost they go for on eBay (I have already been stung by a second hand Slatters clestory kit that came with badly warped parts)   Fortunately at Wells last weekend Coopercraft had some parts available, including a pair of sides and ends and corrid

Dean D14 part 4

More progress, the second bogie has been finished off. Along with fitting some scratch built bogie steps.   I have also made a start on the underframe, fitting the brackets to one side along with the vac cylinder   I ended up gluing the nut a nut to the chassis floor, into which the bogies were bolted.     Finally an area I am unsure on First what are these   Secondly, how do the break assemblies fit to the bogie? I can't work out the fixing point   Edit: one other thing I oug

Ratio LMS diag 138 CK

One of the planned formations for the layout is a Plymouth - Crew inter-regional set, this will be comprised of GW BCK (Sunshine Stock) GW CK (sunshine), GW BTK (collet bow ended) LMS BTK (period 3), LMS CK (LNWR diag 138) and LMS TK (Bachmann). The formation could also run with a restaurant (for which I should have a choice of a H33, a planned H16 70ft, and an LMS 70ft. See http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/101805-lmsgwr-inter-regional-workings/for more info   The idea is

Window Vents

With all the centenary sides in place, I've turned my attention to the Airfix break and composite's window frames.   Each composite needs 10 ventilators (of 3 different sizes) while the break needs 5, in other words a lot...   My first attempt uses 20 thou evergreen strip, a template was roughly drawn on the workbench showing where each bar should be fixed. Plastic weld was applied to the strip and then pressed into place. It sort of worked, but didn't give a good bond along the length o

GWR D95 (LH and TH) Comet/ Hornby)

Now that the H33 project is ready for painting, its time to move onto the next project – a pair of D95.   At the moment my plans are focused around putting together a 5 coach cross country rake consisting of A D95 BTK, ? FK, H33 RC, ? TK, D95 BTK. While the FK and TK are not yet decided, I was wondering if some conversions of Bachmann sunshine stock might be suitable (given that I have plenty of donor coaches already). I want to try and get a mixture of diagrams / coach types.   The D95 i

DCC Troubles

This evenings modelling session was mostly focused around getting some locos fitted with decoders, starting with the locos which I am usually using for testing the layout.   Having found a handful of Lenz Gold and 1025 decoders liberated from sold diesels, it was time to get to work.   First up was to be King Henry VIII, this should have been an easy job (as per the earlier work on Nunney Castle), but for some reason it refused to work. I tried the decoder in Nunney and it worked fine, yet

2220 Finney build part3

Not a lot of progress over the past few days.   First up I double checked the instructions and the cab front was assembled correctly. I still agree it was a bit of a strange way of doing it though…   Unfortunately as I want to fix the boiler to the firebox before attaching to the loco (as per the instructions), I'm very limited as to what I can do now until I get the rolling bars. (I think I am right in saying the next show with GW Models in attendance is not until Expo EM in May.)   So

45xx 5512 in GWR - P4 Conversion part 2

Another day and a bit more progress,   The new frames have now been tidied up to match the metal frame, then checked to ensure that the body fits on correctly. In doing so I have noticed another issue with the body retaining screws being directly behind the buffer beam (and as such will probably have to be removed to fit screw links...)   I have now almost finished the underside modifications, the Bachmann keeper plate has had the break gear / springs chopped off and sanded back to get a fl

Gwr h33 detailing part 3

After a quick trip over to Stroud, I now have some evostick.   So tonight's job was to add the first of the replacement comet sides. First up comparing the comet drawings with the model identified 2 extra roof vents, which were glued into position.   I started by opening out the holes for the door handles and hand rails, before gluing on the drop lights (as the soldering iron is currently out in the garage.)   Next the windows were carefully enlarged to clear the new positions, this was c

5813 - New windows and 42xx

Following up from the work on this loco the other day, here is a photo of the finished windows: (unfortunately I didn't take a 'before' photo, but there are plenty of the Airfix/Hornby 14xx online.)     Unfortunately an inability to spray at the moment, means that I cannot finish off the loco. Possibly once the new layout room is converted the temperature inside the garage will be ok for spraying.   The longer the loco goes without being painted, the more modifications I seem to be maki

3863 P4 Conversion and 3215

3863 - Hornby conversion   As previously mentioned at the weekend, I have been working on converting 3863 to P4. The initial conversion at the weekend showed that the crank pin nuts on the lead axel fouled the crosshead, and that the drive gear was loose on the axle.   I initially attempted to cure the latter with an application of loctight, however it still persisted. I have now stripped it down and attempted to resolve through the application of additional knurling to the axle (attacking

Another Collett Goods 3215

Given the heat of the summer, I have next to no interest in doing any soldering. This is a bit of a problem when it comes to the need to finish a few locos that require etched chassis...   As a result, I have decided to bring forward my second 2251 and use the Ultrascales that I was going to use in the etched chassis for 2220.   A quick conversion later and it is now running. However it is not that smooth a runner, and seems to have very poor slow speed control. I suspect the latter is no

Hornby Hawksworth to p4

A while back I found a photo of a gwr branded Hawksworth coach in a mixed rake dated 1949 Given the availability of the fantastic Hornby model at a low price on eBay I have snapped one up.   Now I did get a little carried away with bidding, and haven checked if the coach I bought matches the prototype photo (or for that matter of it is in the correct livery) but ho hum   The other reason for getting the model is to use it as a benchmark for producing the other coaches for the layout

Having picked up the kit today thoughts have now turned to what to model.   The prototype I want to model is going to be a Westbury based machine, for which there is a photo in one of the cheddar books dated 1949. This is an early build loco and would use the narrow footplate parts, fluted rods, however the photo is too grainy to work out which of the two fireboxes needs to be used.   As ever if anyone knows of a good source of photos of this loco please let me know.   I am going to be b

Small Layout plan: Draycott Plus

Given the amount of work that needs to be done decorating the house before I get to start work on modifying the garage to get it prepared for the layout, thoughts have turned to an interim project to give me somewhere to run stock in the mean time.   The size of Cheddar prevents it from being built inside, however I do have space for approximation a 12ft by 1ft6 layout along one wall in the forth bedroom.   Conversation with Dave (DeeV) about his automated traversers, has got me thinking a

Siphons for Cheddar - Siphon J Build

One of the most important sources of traffic to Cheddar was Strawberries, So much so that there were a dedicated fleet of Siphons marked return to Yatton which were used on this traffic.   Through a discussion with Chris F back at Scaleforum, he mentioned that a Siphon J was included in this fleet. Wanting something a bit different to the Lima and Airfix models that will make up the rest of the fleet, I have finally got hold of a Mallard Models kit   First impressions were good, though a f

5512 Part 4

While I still havent got round to placing my Gibson order for the crank pins, I have made a little more progress   A couple of weeks back I found a couple of perfect components for this project from Ebay, This comprised a set of Mitchell designed conrods and balance weights from the Churchward Models kit, a set of nickel silver components (including conrods and pony trucks) from a Mitchell 44xx kit, and finally a set of Perserverance pony trucks from a 45xx.   So, the balance weights are no

Only a little more progress today (and unfortunately its too dark to take photos tonight but I will try and get some done tomorrow)   First up the pony truck mounts, This morning before I headed to a revision course I glued the two Bachmann mounts into position on the chassis. Once I got back this evening I then fitted on the two Bachmann pony trucks, which after testing have held up nicely.   The only problem is that I really dont want to use the Bachmann part (given it is far too narrow
