King Henry VIII: Hornby renumbering Pt1

I finally managed an hour of modelling late this evening after the baby finally went to sleep, (so much for making it to the Chipping Sodbury Club as planned...) Anyway, with the weather as cold as it is, I didnt fancy a trip to the garage which means it was not possible to do the remaining work on the H26.   That left a choice between starting the A20 Large Window All First (and having to finally form that tumblehome), or renumbering my second Hornby King. Given the title of this blog post

King George V renunbering

Time for another King....   This one started as the shirtbutton liveried example in the bargain Bristolian pack I managed to acquire in Hawkins fire sale. It makes a much better starting point than the King James model I used for my other two Kings. Better yet this one actually has been wired properly!   Sadly they forgot to use glue in its assembly, and so far the lower rear lamp irons, a tender buffer, a tender front handrail, the speedo drive and a pipe have all fallen off. Sod's law

King George V - continued

Having sat in the packet for the past week I have finally got on and installed the bell onto the front of King George V. The casting (from PDK) required a little minor tweaking to get the bell central in its bracket, before chopping off the feed with the dremmel. It was given a little polishing with a fibreglass pencil and the base was painted black before flying into the footplate.   While I had the loco on the bench I decided to get on with another pending job, and removed the double red

K's E116 B-Set - Part 3 - Body Complete

Having fitted extra spacers to the top of the sides, the next task was fitting the roof.   For the first coach (a very late production example of the kit) the roof appears to be much thicker than the earlier production kit that I sourced for the 2nd coach. As a result of this thickness the fit is very poor.   a combination of reshaping the ends curve, and thinning the outer 5mm of the roof (careful filing and scraping with a square ended knife blade) I got the roof to fit. However the rail

K's E116 b set part 1

having spent the last week I'll in bed, ive taken the opportunity to do 5 minutes modelling before my course this morning (will also. E finally able to make a dash to the post office at lunch!) Thanks to the genorisity Of Ian Smith I now have the first half of my E116 B set On first glance it looks like a lot of work to do At the moment my plan is: Prep all components Remove moulded grab handles and end detail Remove raised lines for doors and scribe replacements - this is because there ar

J12 Sleeper - Chassis

The J12 sleeper is rapidly approaching the end of the build stage, the body has now been fitted with the missing droplights and given a coat of white primer.  Last year when I sprayed the Centenaries I had poor coverage issues spraying Phoenix GWR cream over the grey etch primer, while the process was a lot quicker spraying onto white.  The body will eventually need the roof handrail adding, along with the end pipes and flexible corridor connectors.   Moving onto the chassis, the first

Introduction

Following on from this thread, I have now started work on the research   Background: This project is still in the very early stages of research, having decided that I really like both the track plan, the architecture and most importantly the stock seen through the station I have decided that I will base my new project on this line. While at the moment I am planning to model Cheddar, if research on the line turns up a more suitable/interesting station or I find that Cheddar is too large to d

Into the paintshop pt2

Part two of the loco painting.....   As with 37403, I had some issues with the paint not getting into corners.  The solution has been a lot more touch up work with a fine brush, I think the weather paid a part, as did the mix of paint, along with my experimentation with a different airbrush needle (using the medium rather than my usual fine).    Once that was complete it was time to add the other colours, starting with the footplate / steps using a dirty black / brown mix of

Into the paintshop

While I wasn't expecting to be starting any painting this year, inspired by the desire to crack on with a model of a Class 37 on my other blog coupled with a very mild day, tonight I was out in the garage getting started on some painting.  With the garage heated up in advance (and the paint warmed in a bath of hot water before heading outside), I got on with spraying some GWR green.  Between each coat the models were treated to a quick blast with a hairdryer to dry the paint in order to get the

Improving the Oxford Rail Toad

Taking a break from my 1990s resprays, I have been cracking on with a long overdue project for a couple of brake vans. For Brent I have currently got 5 toads at various stages of completeness, 2 of the Hornby AA15 model which have been repainted along with new location branding & a weathered roof. A Bachmann AA19 which has had all of the bodyside handrails removed pending replacement with wire (using the MRD brackets), this one is approaching the top of the to do pile. Finally a pair from Ox

Improved Hornby green

One job that I have been putting off for some time is improving the awful tepid green that Hornby use to spray their GWR locos, last year I had a first attempt using Simon's clear lacquer on a Hornby grange.  The lacquer had been recomended elsewhere (I think @checkrail first mentioned it), but I have had mixed results.  When it works it is a great product, however a couple of times (the aforementioned Grange and on the tender for my 43xx) the varnish has reacted badly and resulted in a crazy pa

Hornby Star 4025 repaint: wartime black

For a while I have been trying to source a Hornby Star to repaint in wartime black as 4025. Today a suitable model finally arrived, all be it the worst experience I have had buying off eBay (taking a long time to arrive, arriving damaged and not DCC fitted). But it was in budget for a DCC ready loco and the damage was easy enough to fix so I haven't bothered sending it back.   Instead I have started to strip it down. First the loco and tender were separated from their respective chassis. Th

Hornby Hawksworth to p4

A while back I found a photo of a gwr branded Hawksworth coach in a mixed rake dated 1949 Given the availability of the fantastic Hornby model at a low price on eBay I have snapped one up.   Now I did get a little carried away with bidding, and haven checked if the coach I bought matches the prototype photo (or for that matter of it is in the correct livery) but ho hum   The other reason for getting the model is to use it as a benchmark for producing the other coaches for the layout

Hornby H33 Improvement

2014 was a busy year, a new job, and the birth of my first child left little time for modelling. And while the new year may not see the progress on the layout that I would like, I want to get on with some more stock projects. (We have started looking for a plot to build a new house, which if all goes to plan will allow for a substancially larger layout plan.) It all depends on how long it takes to find a suitable village plot, in the Berkeley Vale / South West Cotsworlds, which I suspect may

Hornby 42xx

Since they were released I have rather fancied getting one of the large GW tanks from Hornby, however given the low specification of the model I was rather put off by the £100 price tag.   However having found a damaged (and non painted) model on ebay for a sensible price, I couldn't resist...   First up the problems: It needs a new chimney, 3 new steps, a superheater cover, tank vents and of course a set of sprung buffers fitting. There are also a couple of bit of damage to the side which

High Level Chassis

Over the past week I have been building a High Level kit for a 58xx chassis to use with 5813. Given the number of very good threads detailing the construction of these on here, I wont go into detail. Just a couple of photos.   Construction broadly followed the instructions, the slight differences were adding the horn blocks to the sides using my Avonside jig before adding the spacers.   I have also removed the springs to enable the removal of all axles (ive yet to decide on how I will keep

H33 ready for paint

Tonight saw a little progress on the underframe. The plan is to start with a fairly basic representation with the intention of further improvements later. (As such I'm aware it's on the wrong bogies, and the vac cylinders are on the wrong ends)   New v hangers and separate linkages were added from wire and plastic strip, along with the tanks which were made from lengths of plastic tube   Still need to replace the BR1 bogies with the tempory Hornby 7ft gw ones....   At some point the chas

H26 part 3 and Monster

The H26 is progressing nicely, with the chassis now almost finished and bogies fitted. Just need to adjust the 6 tanks now all of which are too long.   I also posed the h/6 against one of its Hawksworth running mates to see if I could live with the height error on a "layout coach", I can't stand the huge solebar, so I will now set to removing the brackets and rebuilding the ends using a set from my large window first.   While waiting on the glue to dry I had a play with a Kirk Monster, th

H26 chassis

Another job that I have been putting off is the tanks for my Comet H26. The castings comet supply are rather poor, the centre casting is too long and the ends too wide.   Based on the photos in Russel there is a large gap between the two banks of 3 tanks, as the comet parts come they don't even fit between the posts.   I modified the tanks replacing the centre casting with plastic tube (with the rule benefits of reducing the weight and being easier to cut. The ends themselves were modified

GWR Wagons for Cheddar

Further progress with the ongoing wagon construction, the first 3 wagons are now working models, with the sprung w irons all fitted and tested. The ratio 5 plank is riding slightly high relative to the two coopercraft models, which is handy as it is being modelled empty whereas the other two will be fully loaded (to hide the inaccurate floor)   I've also dug out a second Ratio kit that was built up earlier in the year to the basic shell stage, which will now get w irons fitted followed by t

GWR Twin Railcar pt1

One of they most important items of stock for Cheddar will be the twin GW railcar no35/36   Working from drawings in MRJ no5, and with a method based on that used by the late Monty Wells (MRJ no6) the aim is to chop 3 Lima models into the twin set (then to build a Comet coach kit for the centre coach).   The first step is the drawings, unfortunatly for some reason MRJ decided to put the drawings for no35/37 and 36/38 across a page joint (no33 and the roofs however were on a single page). GWR Toad pt1

Going to need to model a couple of break vans for Cheddar, a topic on which I havent much research yet.   To start with I have an old Bachmann 20t model   The first thing to go were the moulded on hand rails, a pig of a job carefully carving with a new scalple then finishing off with a square ended blade. At the same time I removed the moulded on lamp irons, and the break shoes.   The planed work: New sprung W Irons (just need to confirm which type) New hand rails, still debating w

Gwr open c

Currently on my work bench is a wagon I have been after for some time, a Ratio kit for a GW Open C. I think I am right in saying this is a 30 year old kit, but the crispness in some of the mouldings is still rather good, all be it slightly let down in some of the finer components.   The solebars come moulded as part of the sides, I think this has the net result of making them significantly over width (while the body looks like it matches the drawings in Ackins et al).   I have chosen to m

GWR Modified Hall Pt6: Finishing the chassis

As it is still far too hot to go in the garage and work on Brent, I am getting on with finishing off the Modified Hall.   The first task tonight was to modify the front end of the chassis block in order to provide clearance for newly fitted step down in the front footplate. The Brassmasters instructions suggest using a hacksaw, that sounded far too much like hard work in this heat so I cracked out the Dremel which made short work of it.     While working on the chassis I also completed

GWR Modified Hall Part 4: Tender Lining

Following on from my pre work modelling session, this evening I have made another step forward on the modified hall. I have decided to go with the Bachmann tender, the Hornby one will return to the spares box for the moment (though I have seen reference to Maindy Hall running in late 47 with a hawksworth tender which may give it a use...)   The first step was to remove the weathering from the Bachmann tender, along with the removal of the BR crests. For this I resorted to neet enamel thinne
