Spitfire pt3

After a little bit of a break from stock work while I focus on the layout, this evening I have been trying to finish off 5071.   As previously mentioned the tender shell purchased for use with 5071 was not in great shape paint wise, and was resprayed black for my Star. This left me with a BR early crest tender to rebrand to G crest W.   I have used my usual method soaking with IPA and then scraping off the remains, but as I have found previously Hornby have certainly changed they printin

Fruit C part 2

Another hours work this evening has the van almost finished.   First up the w irons were soldered onto the padding pieces, a combination of low melt and normal solder depending on the size of the packing piece (some were the thickness of the w iron, others twice the thickness.   With this in place I noticed an error on the floor (the wonderful thing with white metal being how easy it is to unsolder and fix a mistake.). With this done it was time to add the brakes, gas tank, and vac cylinder.

Dave Geen Fruit C - Part 1

Back in 2012 I purchased a Dave Geen kit for a GWR diagram Y3 Fruit C, at the time I opened it up and had a quick look (identifying an issue with the lack of floor) before putting it back in a box for another day.   In the following years I have completely forgotten about it (and managed to lose the instructions). Last night after running out of work to do on my County (given I still cant find the wheels), Instead I dug out the kit for the Fruit C.   First impressions were that the white met

Detailing a Bachman Modified Hall pt 1

The latest loco project for Brent is to make a Modified Hall, to that end I have picked up one of the recent Bachmann model at a bargain price to use as a basis.   The first question is which loco to model, for this I am rather torn. As it comes the model is in BR green (weathered) with a Hawksworth tender. The first Modified Hall to be recorded with a Hawksworth tender is 6971 which was built in October 47. (As an aside if I can find the October carriage working / working timetable my int

4025 - finished

Now that I have some transfers (thanks to Lofty) I have finished off 4025 with some tender crests (HMRS) and a dcc installation (well rewire due to Hornby wiring up the 8pin socket wrong)   I now is at Soc1 standard (dcc, correct livery, correct number, basic details). Soc2 will add couplings and a driver/fireman, while soc3 will be the weathering, real coal. I think I have been working on A400m too long now that I have started thinking in soc standards.... though much like the aircraft I

Comet large window first A20 part 4

It's been a while since I last worked on this coach, but now I have a new soldering iron progress can continue.   When I left off there were the following jobs remaining -interior -roof detail -hinges -corridor connections -drop lights   The hinges and drop lights should have been fine before fixing the sides to the ends. Doing them after certainly added complexity. I tried to use masking tape to hold in place while I tacked in place, but a combination of tight access and my lumpy sol

Hornby Star 4025 repaint: wartime black

For a while I have been trying to source a Hornby Star to repaint in wartime black as 4025. Today a suitable model finally arrived, all be it the worst experience I have had buying off eBay (taking a long time to arrive, arriving damaged and not DCC fitted). But it was in budget for a DCC ready loco and the damage was easy enough to fix so I haven't bothered sending it back.   Instead I have started to strip it down. First the loco and tender were separated from their respective chassis. Th

H26 chassis

Another job that I have been putting off is the tanks for my Comet H26. The castings comet supply are rather poor, the centre casting is too long and the ends too wide.   Based on the photos in Russel there is a large gap between the two banks of 3 tanks, as the comet parts come they don't even fit between the posts.   I modified the tanks replacing the centre casting with plastic tube (with the rule benefits of reducing the weight and being easier to cut. The ends themselves were modified

King George V - continued

Having sat in the packet for the past week I have finally got on and installed the bell onto the front of King George V. The casting (from PDK) required a little minor tweaking to get the bell central in its bracket, before chopping off the feed with the dremmel. It was given a little polishing with a fibreglass pencil and the base was painted black before flying into the footplate.   While I had the loco on the bench I decided to get on with another pending job, and removed the double red

4292 finally has a chimney

Waiting for me in the post when arriving home from work today was a small packet from PDK, most of which is now put away for Monday evening modelling (when looking after the children for my wife's evening out means the only modelling is confined to the spare bedroom rather than the garage.). This should see steps added to 4025s tender, fall plates added to both my granges, the bell fitted to the front of 6000 and a chimney for my manor.   It also included a 42xx chimney to fit in place of the

A pair of small prairies

Operation of the Kingsbridge branch requires 2 small prairies for passenger duties, one based in Kingsbridge and the other arriving during the day to cover the busy period in which a train runs in each direction at the same time. There is also a need for a third small prairie to run with the second loco above on an Exeter Plymouth working based on a memory from gwr expert John Lewis of a double headed 4575 power.   The first loco was renumbered a while back to 4582, a frequent visitor to the

Yet more renunbering

carrying on with the renumbering, there are now 3 more locos ready for the layout (almost).   First up was 6000, finishing up from where I left off last night. The first job was to repaint the rest of the underframe to get rid of the remaining elements of the lining. While I had the paint out I also had a crack at weathering the silver parts of the cylinders, adding an oily gleam and toning down the brightness. Finally the brake rodding, vac pipe and whatever the brass bit is below the cylin

King George V renunbering

Time for another King....   This one started as the shirtbutton liveried example in the bargain Bristolian pack I managed to acquire in Hawkins fire sale. It makes a much better starting point than the King James model I used for my other two Kings. Better yet this one actually has been wired properly!   Sadly they forgot to use glue in its assembly, and so far the lower rear lamp irons, a tender buffer, a tender front handrail, the speedo drive and a pipe have all fallen off. Toplight pt2

A little more work on the toplight, the chassis has been thickened up with a laminate of 20thou plasticard which sits inside the bodyshell. The slaters headstock was glued in place along with comet buffers. The coach I am working from has L section trussing so this was added from some much shortened dc kits parts.   Bogies (9ft fish-belly) were from my scrap box (kays I think)   Next up roof detailing, needing the toilet panels adding along with roof vents.   All in all I am still not

Spitfire part 2

The missing toolboxes were added from a Southern Pride tender, with evergreen strip forming the plate under it. (As an aside the tender chassis currently under the white metal body will probably be reused with the unpainted 3500gl shell that I have in the spades box.   All that remains to be added now is a single missing step, I see PDK list an etch of GW tender steps, so given I need to order a bell for 6000 and a chimney for the 42xx I will add this at the same time.   Now it's just a wait

Renunbering and DCC Hornby King

6013   This morning I replaced the tender to loco socket on the Kings tender, using the part left over from my 28xx. This is a much older part, (black circuit board), and built to a far higher quality than Hornby are currently using.   After installing a Lenz Gold and connecting the loco to the tender, it ran perfectly. Now just need to find a soloution for the other one (and hope that Hornby have sorted the issue on the 2016 King Charles II   6027 While I try and work out how I am going

Brent: 2016 in review / Plans for 2017

Apologies for what is a rather long post, with no photos to break things up. I want to briefly summarise the progress made in 2016, and more importantly outline the state of play of the current work in progress projects going into 2017. Ideally when I review this again this time next year, most of these projects will be complete.   On locos there has been a lot of progress, both increasing the size of the loco fleet, and ensuring those purchases are DCC fitted and have the appropriate name

More castle renumbering: Spitfire pt 1

While I wait for my latest order of plates from Modelmaster, (this time covering King George V, Beenham Grange and of course Spitfire, once again taking advantage of their 22% off code.   So having received another Wellington as a Christmas present, it's time to start the renumbering.   The actual renumbering can wait until I receive the plates, but I have made a start on the tender. Clearly Spitfire needs to be modelled with a 4000gl Collett tender rather than the Hawksworth supplied. Th

Comet A20 pt 3

Escaping from the never ending list of Christmas tasks for a short while yesterday evening allowed more time to work on the A20   The headstocks have been soldered onto the chassis, again using scrap etch folded into an L to reinforce the centre. The holes have been opened up to match the castings (though I do wonder why Comet insist on having holes which are a lot smaller than the parts intended to fit. I understand that there will always be an amount of fettling needed, but having a 1.8mm

Comet large window A20 first and wartime brown C77

First up the wartime brown C77 all third, today I added the remaining transfers (the lining for the other side was a real pain as the transfer kept splitting, so I'm dreading the B Set with all those extra doors). Once it was finished I gave the coach a quick coat of Halfords satin varnish to seal it all in (and prevent any further damage to the lining). The roof is still too glossy so that will need a coat of matt varnish to finish it off. The plastic wheels have been replaced with metal, a

While the H26 sits in the queue awaiting painting (along with the Hornby conversions for H33 and an ex railroad D95) I have been getting on with the next coach in the todo pile, a Comet A20 Large window first.   This is intended primarily for my down Cornish Reveria Express set (noting that the post war formation's name had changed from limited to Express.)   This is a full comet kit from eBay, and will be built to the same standard as the H26 (i.e. All hinges and drop lights fitted, but onl

Wartime brown coaches part 3

Over the past few weeks I have tried brush painting the roof of the brown sunshine stock third to see how it looks, in terms of time taken and overall finish it was not good enough to roll out on the rest of my coaches so the airbrush will need to be set up.   It is however now almost finished, with the transfers applied to the first side. The class logos and GWR crest are by HMRS, while the orange lining is from Replica. I never thought I would be using up my spare OHLE warning lines, but i

2800 basket case part 2

So tonight after a little more track work, it was on with the 2800. I am starting to think I need to only have DCC fitted locos in the garage as the non fitted stuff is proving too much of a distraction!   Anyway, back on topic...   As previously mentioned this model came via eBay from a trader who often sells damages locos for a bargain price (well at the time I thought it a bargain, now not so sure having recently bought a 3800 for a similar price that is DCC fitted...). The loco to tender

More renunbering- Kings and Grange

The latest Modelmasters order arrived a couple of days ago, and I've finally got around to fitting them last night.   First the King, the Hornby etchings were removed from the model and prepared for the new plates by distressing the area under the printed name. The new plate was carefully cut away from its splasher and then superglued into position on the Hornby splasher. The whole assembly was then glued into place on the model, along with the cab side plates. This process was then repeated f

Wartime Brown GWR Coaches

A key requirement of modelling the post war scene is to have plenty of stock still wearing wartime liveries, a task that is progressing well on the loco front (with the Grange, 42xx and Austerity in black), but nothing on the coaches. So over the past couple of nights (with very little real modelling time to finish the DCC conversions) I have made a start on a few resprays.   First of all what is wartime brown? There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer, ranging from almost red oxide to
