Comet A20 pt 3

Escaping from the never ending list of Christmas tasks for a short while yesterday evening allowed more time to work on the A20   The headstocks have been soldered onto the chassis, again using scrap etch folded into an L to reinforce the centre. The holes have been opened up to match the castings (though I do wonder why Comet insist on having holes which are a lot smaller than the parts intended to fit. I understand that there will always be an amount of fettling needed, but having a 1.8mm

Another cattle wagon

Last night saw cattle van no3 assembled, this time building straight from the kit rather than adding my usual sprung suspension as the wagon is being built for OO only. Going forward it will just be long wheelbase stock getting the extra suspension units (along with anything with poorly designed parts in the kit)   I do like the design of these coopercraft kits, they just fall together and have such crisp tooling. The open slats on the mink that is next on the bench are some of the best open

4707 part 4

3 hours in the workshop this morning has seen progress on the chassis,   First the missing pipe was added to the valance, so the body is now finished.   Onto the chassis, I don’t like the cast metal pony truck, but as I have nothing better I have made do. I have improved it by fitting brass bearings before soldering together.   Next was the bogie mount, first filing a gulag surface onto the top and bottom of the brass bar spacer, then drilling a2mm hole   Finally the brakes were solde

PDK 47xx part 1

One of the last few major locos that I will need for Brent is a 4700, this is intended for use on the perishables express freight, the milk train and the odd passenger train. In other words of the 3 remaining missing locos which are required to perform a full operating cycle, this is the least important (vs the 4300 and Bulldog which are used on far more workings.) The plan had been that I would buy one of the soon to be released Heljan models, however seeing a partially built PDK kit on eBay

Stock for Brent: Review of 2017

2017 in Review   As is usually the norm at this time of year, I have been looking back at last year’s aims to see what was actually managed. This time I have also tried to include some photos! I will be covering both layouts in their respective threads, so this will purely concentrate on the rolling stock for Brent. Here is last year’s post http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/853/entry-18795-brent-2016-in-review-plans-for-2017/ Locos: Completed Projects: A large number of loco pro

County of Somerset Part 4

Today I have a day off which was originally intended to work on Brent, however with no desire to work on the double slip instead I’ve cracked on with the County   I started by unsoldering the slide bars and repositioning to correct the length, along with adding the brackets.   It now needs fitting with spacer washers to stop the drive rods hitting he lead crank pin, I also want to add chassis washers (once I find some) in order that I can get rid of the slop in the lead axle     The nex

Comet A20 - almost ready for paint

Its been a long time since I last worked on the Comet A20 kit, mostly because I didnt have the required drill to get on with adding the roof vents. Having finally dug one out in order to finish off the Cargowaggon vans, I carried on and fitted the vents to the First.     It now just needs to be fitted with the door hinges, along with a deep clean to remove the tarnishing to the etch, then it will be ready for painting. Given this will be the third completed coach its about time that some re

A tender for a Saint

Finally back in the UK for the rest of the month, its time to crack on with the layout. Before getting started on a large batch of point blade installation on the down fiddleyard, there were a few outsanding loco projects to complete.   Today I recieved last weeks spares order from Peter's Spares, this included a tender wheelset to enable the compleation of 2846 which is now fully operational.     The other parts ordered were a Churchward tender chassis, wheels, buffer pack and keeper

GWR Coach Painting

Some good weather this morning has resulted in a little more coach painting,   First up is another Railroad / Comet D95, rather a redundant coach to be honest (given that I now have 2 pairs of the new Hornby D95, and will likely add another pair when (if) Hornby do them in post war livery.) As such rather than finishing in post war chocolate and cream (as per my original plan), I have decided that the LH coach will join the RH painted in wartime brown livery. To that end I have dug out a can o

Fruit C part 2

Another hours work this evening has the van almost finished.   First up the w irons were soldered onto the padding pieces, a combination of low melt and normal solder depending on the size of the packing piece (some were the thickness of the w iron, others twice the thickness.   With this in place I noticed an error on the floor (the wonderful thing with white metal being how easy it is to unsolder and fix a mistake.). With this done it was time to add the brakes, gas tank, and vac cylinder.

4025 - finished

Now that I have some transfers (thanks to Lofty) I have finished off 4025 with some tender crests (HMRS) and a dcc installation (well rewire due to Hornby wiring up the 8pin socket wrong)   I now is at Soc1 standard (dcc, correct livery, correct number, basic details). Soc2 will add couplings and a driver/fireman, while soc3 will be the weathering, real coal. I think I have been working on A400m too long now that I have started thinking in soc standards.... though much like the aircraft I

Hornby Star 4025 repaint: wartime black

For a while I have been trying to source a Hornby Star to repaint in wartime black as 4025. Today a suitable model finally arrived, all be it the worst experience I have had buying off eBay (taking a long time to arrive, arriving damaged and not DCC fitted). But it was in budget for a DCC ready loco and the damage was easy enough to fix so I haven't bothered sending it back.   Instead I have started to strip it down. First the loco and tender were separated from their respective chassis. Th

H26 chassis

Another job that I have been putting off is the tanks for my Comet H26. The castings comet supply are rather poor, the centre casting is too long and the ends too wide.   Based on the photos in Russel there is a large gap between the two banks of 3 tanks, as the comet parts come they don't even fit between the posts.   I modified the tanks replacing the centre casting with plastic tube (with the rule benefits of reducing the weight and being easier to cut. The ends themselves were modified

K's E116 b set part 1

having spent the last week I'll in bed, ive taken the opportunity to do 5 minutes modelling before my course this morning (will also. E finally able to make a dash to the post office at lunch!) Thanks to the genorisity Of Ian Smith I now have the first half of my E116 B set On first glance it looks like a lot of work to do At the moment my plan is: Prep all components Remove moulded grab handles and end detail Remove raised lines for doors and scribe replacements - this is because there ar

2800 basket case part 2

So tonight after a little more track work, it was on with the 2800. I am starting to think I need to only have DCC fitted locos in the garage as the non fitted stuff is proving too much of a distraction!   Anyway, back on topic...   As previously mentioned this model came via eBay from a trader who often sells damages locos for a bargain price (well at the time I thought it a bargain, now not so sure having recently bought a 3800 for a similar price that is DCC fitted...). The loco to tender

Comet H26 12 wheel restaurant part 4: fixing the height

As previously discussed, I made quite an error on this coaches ends soldering the brackets too low.   Fortunately I hadn't got round to soldering the bracket to the sides so there was just the one joint to break. Once unsoldered and then cleaned up I flipped them upside down, clamped with some hair clips and soldered in place. Spacers will be used to get the floor to the correct height (although the headstocks are doing a good job on their own.   The headstocks also needed unsoldering and

H26 part 3 and Monster

The H26 is progressing nicely, with the chassis now almost finished and bogies fitted. Just need to adjust the 6 tanks now all of which are too long.   I also posed the h/6 against one of its Hawksworth running mates to see if I could live with the height error on a "layout coach", I can't stand the huge solebar, so I will now set to removing the brackets and rebuilding the ends using a set from my large window first.   While waiting on the glue to dry I had a play with a Kirk Monster, th

A start at renunbering: King, Hall, 72xx and WD

I have ran out of parts to work on the layout, so it's time to get on with some more loco work. Foolishly I have strayed from my usual approach of only buying Shirtbutton locos to rebrand to 1940s liveries, and bought a handful of Great xx Western locos.   The first two are recent Hornby releases, the King and 72xx. In both cases the microsol took longer than usual to shift, and has left a fair bit of ghosting of the old logo (much worse in the case of the 72xx.). Of course this is compoun

Detailing Hornby LMS Diner

One of the key requirements in my attempts to model enough coaches to allow the modelling of the Great Western Mainline in 1947, is the inter regional services I have touched on previously.   As such amongst my initial plans is a Plymouth - Liverpool service which was comprised of half GWR and half LMS (with the dining provision alternating between the two companies). Given that there are a few other formations which also have the alternating LMS diner, this seemed a good starting point. An

GWR D95 part 4

Somehow managed to find a fair bit of modelling time over the weekend, meaning I managed a lot more progress on the coach projects.   First up was the RH D95, The last remaining side was prepared and fitted following the same method as described in Part 3. The only difference being that less material needed to be removed in order to clear the new windows (as a result of not having separate droplights.) I'm guessing these must be amongst Comet’s older kits, as the level of detail is a lot les

Dean D14 - bogies

Managed a quick hours modelling while wife and baby were out for a mums coffee morning. Finally made a start on the bogies.   First up the design, I don't like the inside bearings design, I particularly don't like the fact that you have to send away for the p4 sub frame (without which the bearings will fall out of the guides.) nor the fact that the main bogie etch fouls the wheels. However I do like the carful design of the break bits, and the quality of etch and castings.   The latter was

GWR Wagons for Cheddar

Further progress with the ongoing wagon construction, the first 3 wagons are now working models, with the sprung w irons all fitted and tested. The ratio 5 plank is riding slightly high relative to the two coopercraft models, which is handy as it is being modelled empty whereas the other two will be fully loaded (to hide the inaccurate floor)   I've also dug out a second Ratio kit that was built up earlier in the year to the basic shell stage, which will now get w irons fitted followed by t

Freight for Cheddar: Cattle Wagons

The next project for tonight was a start on the first wagon for my cattle rake, following Martin Goodall's articles from MRJ as a guide and using a combination of Coopercraft and Airfix kits.   The plan is for a 6 wagon rake comprised of: 1 W3 with rebuilt doors (shortened Airfix) 1 W8 Airfix 1 12 Airfix 2 W5 (one with rebuilt doors one with standard) Coopercraft 1 W1 (coopercraft)   To start with I am going with the W12, followed by the W3   The ends will need to be modified to get t

Freight for Cheddar: GWR Open Wagons (Cooper-Craft kit build)

Next up on the todo list, a batch of Coopercraft wagon kits. This covers a pair of diagram O4 5 planks, a diagram O5 4 plank, and an O2 7 plank along with another Ratio O29 5 plank   The body of the coopercraft wagons goes together very nicely, and are very well moulded crisp components with no flash. However I am confused by the design of the floor which appears to sit far too high.   The sole bars caused big issues, in that once thinned down to take sprung replacement w irons there was s

Thornycroft PB

While searching in a stock box at the weekend trying to find a couple more old private owner wagons I came across a Peco kit for a 1926 Thornycroft PB GW covered lorry.   Now even with any restrictions on replacing during the war, clearly a 20 year life is not going to happen in GW service. As such I've been thinking about an alternative use. After thinking about which sort of operators typically use old life expired equipment, and narrowed it down to either farm use or a coal merchant, the
