Ruby Road Sidings part 3. Trying something different.

a bit more playing around with the sidings trying to figure out a track plan i like. this gives me 3 longer sidings but no run round. If I put 2 more tracks on this could be the reception siding and run round allowing the loco to do it's own shunting?

Weathering Part 2

Welcome to the latest installment of my workbench blog. This is to show how (hopefully) my weathering of wagons has improved. Reading how others have achieved their results and trying to replicate them has I hope helped these wagons to look less toy like and more work weary. Seen left is the VBA in as new condition. As I think its too clean looking, I've had a go this morning at my VBA with mucky white spirit and matt enamels. First wash with grime. It still needs another going over and

Seacows and sealions

In my collection of Lima and Hornby Seacow ballast wagons I so far have 5 Lima YGH and 1 Hornby YGB. The pictures show them as i weather them and detail them. As I received them from Temeraire. The first stages of weathering. The Lima versions need to be made a little more rusty looking. The Hornby one came from Neil Mason and needs a little attention, its missing a head protector at one end and a sets of steps has broken off. put side by side and you can tell they are by different

Concrete Lineside Huts

I've been making the Ratio concrete lineside huts recently to kill a bit of time. Painting a realistic concrete colour is not easy but i hope i have captured the look of a decaying hut. They seem to be all sorts of colours out in the real world. the Lima PGAs in the background are waiting on the centre bulkhead being cut away. i do think i should have painted the doors and windows green before glueing together though. I'm unsure whether to glaze them or not, or leave them as if the glas

Lima PGA

Recently I decided to make my old second hand Lima PGAs look a little better by taking out the centre bulkhead. I've filed the plastic away with a small triangular file. The first couple I have done were originally in some sort of purple colour when bought, this can be seen where the grey I painted them in has been scratched whilst removing the bulkhead. needs a bit more weathering before it's finished though.   so far 4 started and 6 more to go! It's quite tricky to cut the plastic ou

Ruby Road sidings

Wanted something to use out doors to take pictures on in proper light so I came up with this. This experiment cost next to nothing. A small piece of 9mm ply found in the garage, some spare Hornby set track, some Pva, ash from BBQ. Spread glue on ply and place in BBQ . Spread ash from BBQ liberally over glue. Remove and leave to dry.   the glue has dried and the surplus ash has been knocked off and a wagon run over to check nothing fowls. i dont think it looks too bad for an experiment fo

fixing a secondhand Hornby ZRA.

Source: my layout, Ruby Road.     Not sure what to use for couplings. Thinking that for now it can be used on the end of a train as it's only missing one coupling. In the future it could be made to be a translator between the old tension lock and any new method I start to use for couplings.   time marches on and I've now got a second ZRA from Neil Mason and it has been weathered and modified for 3 link couplings. My plan is to do the same for the one end of my origi

HST power cars

You have probably already seen my Hornby HST power car that has had an indentity change. it's not the best job in the world, in fact it looks battered, but it is carrying a cast name plate Top of the Pops and is numbered 43002. I have several 43010s so decided to change it, but as the InterWeb was not around when I did it and I didn't have a picture to work from i guessed about the nameplate and have since found out I guessed wrong . Any ideas how it can get the metal name plate off without d

Lima Class 50 Eagle refurbishment.

I keep looking at my Lima 50043 and thinking I need to sort the front end out. For a start the multiple working gear and ETH needs painting orange, but what shade should it be? I have a couple of Craftsman Models headlamps in my bits box as i'm sure it should have them fitted if in large logo? also the headcode box would have marker lights by this time so the Craftsman Models panels are being used and some Jackson Evans metal nameplates will make it look a whole lot better too. I also like t
