Pedants & Odours or is it Odours& Pedants?

Last weekend saw us take my layout Pen Y Bont to the 45th Redditch MRC exhibition at their usual venue Trinity High School.

All I can say is thank the lord for Satnavs! without my Tom Tom I would have never have found the place, Redditch town centre is like a maze to me, I thought Telford was bad but this place is something else.

It was also a good job that I use our car to transport the layout because one bridge I had to pass under only has a 8ft clearance! You can actually see the skid marks on the underside of the bridge where people have only just made it!

Anyway as usual I digress, so back to the exhibition.

The Redditch club are a friendly bunch of chaps and the exhibition itself was quite good having some layouts that I had not seen before. Abbey Road, a London UG layout won the prize for best in show and deservedly so. it is a super layout and also for anyone living outside of London an unusual subject for a layout.

Pen Y Bont on the whole ran quite well, there was a slight problem with one of the points on the cross over not changing over but that was soon sorted. ( The point motor actuating pin had caught on some wiring).

The biggest problem we had was with some of the punters!

We only saw one of the "Great unwashed/rucksack" brigade and I had come prepared for this...

I just knew that some of the cheap deodorant that you always seem to get from the scrooge type relatives for Christmas would come in handy some time!

Unfortunately I can not say the same for the Pedants that seemed to be out in force over this weekend!

The first one to be encountered was the same guy who criticised my well wagon at Midland Railex.

We made a point of shunting that particular wagon right under his nose, he couldn't miss it!

Mid afternoon on the Sunday we are now faced by the "persistent pedant!"

I had just this past week built up a couple of Dapol Stanier non corridor coaches. Because I needed them for this show I just built them to Dapol's instruction apart from metal wheels.

Enter the "Pesistent Pedant"

"Of course the roof is all wrong" pause, " the bogies have the wrong steps" "The battery boxes are wrong"

"The windows in the brake end are wrong" All this over the period of about 45mins!

Maybe these are valid points but I can improve these things as I go along.

So, after all that I am now adding some of this to my exhibition packing list!

Cheers!

RE the '###### Repellant' - I've just been to Halfords & they don't stock it.. ;-)

Somebody used it all on the Sales Staff maybe? ;)

That made me smile Frank

I too have a raft of those former aerosols given by distant relations...which worries me why they think they need to keep supplying me with it.

I'll get my backpack...:D

That's put a smile on me face.

Know what you mean about Redditch. I used to go with a lass from there (many, many years ago now) and I could never find her house no matter how many times I'd go. All the ring roads and the houses look the same!

Yes when we moved to Redditch a few years ago, it was a nightmare, roundabout after roundabout, one wrong turn and your in Bromsgrove. I bobbed into the show but didn't stop long as I had a busy day ahead of me for a change.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Frank you are likely not to have exhibited down south yet and so been visited by "the commentator". As the name suggests he keeps up a running commentary on what is going on, i.e. "now the Pannier is shunting the well wagon into the back siding". Such are the joys of exhibiting.

At my last show I was placed next to the 501st which if you don't know is the Star Wars Stormtroopers and Darth Vader gang. Really good for pulling a crowd!!!!

Around the corner was Captain Kirk of Starship Enterprise and then of course, we have the wild-eyed ex-army type who is convinced he is on a hit list issued by the secret service, closely followed by a rather muscular lady with a five o'clock shadow and biceps.

Great show - wish train shows were like that!!! (It was an IPMS show in case you were wondering.)

Even they need the whiffometer on some of them!!!!

I'll have a tin of the Bull.... spray. As we operate from the front its often difficult to get away from the worst pedants - I normally leave Kim to deal with the worst offenders as she has more tact than me!

As for the 'commentator' refered to above, he's rather fun and far less irritating than many.

Oh the joys of exhibiting.....!

Should I ever build and exhibit a layout (highly unlikely!) I have several wagons ready to roll out in case things get too serious - a couple of Ratio vans in freelance brewery liveries for example. Whilst authentic operation is a goal for the majority of us we're not going to get every detail right, we're only human after all, and the pedants should remember that before patronising those that do more than just research and actually build stuff!

It does make me die when people just moan for the sake of it! For goodness sake its a model railway and to be blunt Frank your work is probably to a much higher standard than theirs. Everyone's a critic!

Love the spray by the way! I'll have to remember that one!

Regards,

Nick
