Station Building progress

blog-0423152001348524735.jpgIts been a couple of weeks since my last blog entry, so I thought I'd post a progress report on my station building project. Thanks to information provided by Buffalo and Tim V, I've got a much better understanding of how Will Clarke's buildings were constructed. The main body shell is nearly complete, window sills and corbels still need to be added. The next stage is to start construction of the ornate chimneys that adorned the building, before moving onto the roof and then the platform awning. This is my first 7mm building and I still find myself being surprised by the size of this scale. Despite being a fairly small prototype the model is nearly 18 inches long and will probably look even bigger once the roof and canopy are in in place!

I hope you like the results so far, I'd appreciate any advice on where to get, or how to make some awning brackets and also a good supplier of suitable awning valance.

Best wishes

I am impressed, it is a lovely looking building. The quoins look as though they were fun to do.

Thanks N15, the quoins start out as being "fun" but fairly rapidly move into "how many more" catagory lol

Nearest I can find for the valance is on:

but it doesn't look deep enough for a Clarke building. And I'm not convinced it looks as good as a homemade plasticard effort.

Hi Miss Prism, I think you're probably right, these etched brass ones don't quite cut it. I'm not sure I can face making valance from scratch, I guess I'd need to make some kind of jig to get all the boards the same.

I thought I had a record of some standard dimensions for valencing, but I can't find it now. (Was it in an MRJ?? John Hayes article for Wallingford??) Anyway, as a bit of a guess:

The awning brackets were different on each of the railways. For example, the Newent Railway had "NR" cast into the bracket, the BNSR had a plain circle inside the normal shape. On my 4mm building, I made a jig and scratchbuilt the brackets, as you only need about 6, maybe consider that for your model.

When it comes to the awning, it's very difficult to get consistency over that number of valencing, suggest you look at what is available in etching. On mine, I used some moulded 7mm valencing which was just right for my 4mm model. Always try and think outside the box when modelling.
