blog-0807304001349776498.jpgHaving attended a very interesting and inspirational '2mm Association' AGM, it's time to put that inspiration to work... Currently I'm working from a set of photographic images, using 'known dimensions' to create scales etc for construction of the 'concept model'. What I AM missing is a good aerial image - preferably from the 1947-49 RAF photo recce series (I'm off to the local museum today in hopes of rectifying this).

So here's the 'ground plan' marked out on 6mm foam-board. Oriented to 'North' and compared to

the 'Googleearth' image.

Unfortunately there is a plethora of rooflines in the area marked 'X' which cannot be determined by ground-level images, so further info is needed (a possible view from the local church tower might also help)!

The buildings front 'West Street' in Farnham - in the model will be slightly 'offstage'. The shop buildings will be 'half-relief plus' (ie the backscene will commence just below the ridge-line - I think this gives a better effect). 'West Street' will become Upton Dene's 'High Street' & will re-appear to provide access to the station forecourt.. To add 'railway interest I might also add a 'private siding in the south area of the yard (currently a car park).

I decided to split the model into four groups - the main shop-buildings (black outline)

a two-storey range (originally hop-kilns) to the 'east' (red), the (possible) weavers buildings (blue) and a further range of buildings (also possible ex-hop kilns) (green) on the western boundary.

Documentary evidence supports the origin of the buildings - note the kilns are not the 'Kentish Oast' design but served much the same purpose, and were later converted to dwellings.

All construction will be in 1mm card, using watercolour washes to represent wall finishes. I started by modelling the western end of the shop-backs, putting in place the 'ridgeline' as a central spine.

The two-storey brick extension was then added

So that's it so far - off to town now to try to resolve the other issues!

Nothing like a card mockup, to get the creative juices flowing! Looking forward to seeing more.
