BRM Weathering with Oils Pictures

Pugsley

As the pictures in the printed magazine haven't shown up some of the subtle effects that can be achieved with the oil paints as much as I'd like, I've taken the liberty of putting the pictures used in the article, plus a couple of bonus ones, here. I'm not including the words though - this is in addition to the article, not instead of it ;)

Hi Martin, the article was a great read... but yes some of the subtlety of the photos didn't reproduce perfectly (such is the way)... so thanks for posting them on here. I've not tried your methods, preferring personally to start with the airbrush; but airbrushing is not always possible, especially at this time of year, so the technique you've demonstrated is really useful and (to be honest) achieves just as subtle an effect, which is surely really rewarding. I'll keep a look out for some of these paints... and I must try some of the MIG weathering powders... I've only used the C&L and Tamiya ones previously.

Was there something odd going on with the etch brake levers... they're visible in a few photos, missing in others... that got my mind wondering.

Now, how about trying a Deltic ;)

I enjoyed the article, too. I've been using these water-soluble oils for normal art type painting for years, by the way, and there are a couple of products on the market for altering the consistency and speeding up the drying time. As Martin says the tubes do last a long time - my oldest ones are well over a decade old now and still usable.

Thanks everyone!

Nothing odd - I just kept knocking them off! I started off refixing them, but when I knocked them off for the second time I gave up and added them at the end :)

No chance :P

Ah, yes the brake levers can be a little fragile. I bend mine at the top to a right angle - horizontal piece... and insert in into a slot formed by 4 0.4mm drilled holes... opened out and then affixed with a CA glue... ends up being a very strong bond, and I've not lost one yet.

No Deltic. Pah! Oh well, I'll just have to enjoy your 37s instead then! Good luck with the biggun... it's getting there then!
