get back in your box...

Good evening,

Full on deadlines at work have affected progress of late and to say I am behind is an understatement, but having given the exhibition manager, Chris R, a commitment a year ago, I intend to honour it, so some how things will get done.

My brother has kindly made me the sub structure on which the layout would sit as I couldn't see a way of getting that in my hand luggage ;)

I sent him some drawings / sketches and he has made a 300mm x 2000mm board which folds in half to fit in his car, and there is a small attachable down stand in the centre for holding the transformers and Gin Tonics - How fitting I shall be exhibiting alongside Jon020, who also shares a fondness for Bombay Sapphire and blue diesels I recall :D

The structure will then straddle two Draper A frame extendable leg supports which I secured last year as I wanted to exhibit this layout with rail level at 1200mm above FFL having learnt lessons when Kyle was exhibited on a table and peered upon...for me, 2mmFS just looks better set higher.

During last week, I have managed to cut out the pieces for the two fiddle yards and the intention was to build the fascias from 3mm ply rather than my usually thick grey card but disaster struck late last week when the office laser cutter broke and could be out of use for 2 -3 weeks :(

That also throws the platform canopy into array as I had drawn the awning edge profile and the model shop manager suggested making some very basic small laser cut elements for the canopy support structure...time to rethink these again...and fast.

Also, this evening I flew back the layout to LGW (security at BCN asked me to open my case after it went through the x-ray machine ;)) and I hope to be able to tinker with it during the week, perhaps starting the third rail. I attach a few pics of the fiddle yard support structures which the folded cassettes will mesh in with (need to add the pcb track at the raised ends) and also a pic of the layout folded into the boxfile as Mike was asking recently for that...thankfully it fits in the box with the signals and the canopy structure bringing it up to lid closure height.

Nothing like a rapidly closing deadline to ensure rapid progress! Good luck with the build, it's looking great so far

This is looking good Pete. :)

You've got the infrastructure in place so hopefully the platform canopy won't present too many problems?

As for breaking the office laser cutter. Did you wear it out? :D

24 series countdown music once again! ;)

Look forward to an uodate this week.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Pete,

Keep up the good work.

Some ideas for the canopy (both of which involve spending money!)... get York Modelmaking to laser cut it for you or else turn your CAD into 3D and get it done in FUD. It might be a bit fragile in FUD but you could probably make it a good deal thicker than scale where it doesn't show.

I also had a look in my gloat box. I have some moulded (Slaters???) plastic stuff that's quite nice but a very different style from Paddock Wood, so probably a non-starter.

Regards, Andy

Hi Pete -

Working in London you might well find a local source for laser-cutting.  I do know of one - but it's down in Sussex at Barnes Green.

Other than that - lookin' good!

Still having trouble believing the layout actually fits inside a box file - brilliant!  Thanks for the picture - gives a good impression of the tolerances you've had to work too to achieve this - mind boggling.  I've no doubt you'll meet the deadline, but good luck with the hassle and hoops you'll have to endure all the same.  I too am keen to know what the BCN security thought of it?  Hope they too appreciated the level of detail and complexity put into this.

Thanks Andy - yes we just had a FUD model done at work but I need to keep costs down as already spent a lot...these small projects are not always inversely proportional to the cash required.

Thanks also for the Slaters offer...I might have some of that too...or maybe it was Ratio I have? I think the laser cutter will be back so I keep telling myself to work on the other bits that need doing. My first idea, which may come back is to make a simple brass structure and clad in plasticard sheet where required so Plan B maybe become Plan A :D

Thanks Ian...and for the suggestions...I will hang on a little longer and see what happens the end of this week at work...

Thanks Jon - I opened the luggage and opened the boxfile and said in my best Spanish...."es una marqueta de tran...para mis hijos" :P They looked like they enjoyed it a little...;)

Thanks Lisa...not sure what strains my eyes more these days...2mmFS or your choice of font...:D

Thanks Rich...and I thought you were going to suggest an excursion of a 25 on clay hoods... :)

Thanks Mike - It blew them off the scent of what I was smuggling through in my coat pockets... (only joking, just in case Spanish security are reading this)

Hi Pete,

Track work and ballasting looks great! I'm sure you will meet your deadline and I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh next month. Good luck with all the finishing touches!

Best regards,

Jeremy
