Tanks a lot...

blog-0787307001366563386.jpgHello Again :)

I have indulged myself a little over this weekend. I did plan to get some more point rodding completed but instead my test etches turned up in the post...

blogentry-2065-0-77984300-1366562565.jpg

Part of this etch was a long waited for Anchor mount tank wagon chassis, its something that has been on my to do list for a while now as they seemed to be the mainstay of oil traffic along the DNSR from fawley in the south. Sadly there isnt anything in 2mm that fitted the bill so armed with a scale drawing (which took some finding, thanks Andy) I drew up a chassis etch.

Itching to give the etch a go I made a start. Now, one of the difficulties with the chassis was the fact you could see so much of it so I couldnt really use a 'standard' 2mm chassis etch as the base is very solid. Using an idea I got from one of Stephen H absolutely fantastic kits I came up with a solution to adding the cross members under the chassis...

blogentry-2065-0-52713400-1366562565.jpg

It made into a surprisingly strong chassis (I can now see why they did it in real life!)

The tank itself was made from a piece of brass tube but for the next batch I am hoping to get the tank cast in resin. I have now given it a coat of black paint ready for transfers and weathering..

To be honest I didnt expect the etch to go together as well as it did. There are some tweaks to do to the drawings but there wasnt anything that stopped me from building this one. I must be getting better at this etching lark! Only about another 29 to build now, along with CoT MkIV, Peckett MkII, and of course, more point rodding.....

Hi Julia.

Top stuff, as usual!

I'll have one of those off you if you are producing more?! There is one in the yard at Ropley between the containers which is used for fuel storage I believe. I was thinking i'd have to scratch build, but perhaps not now :)

I think if I tried to solder something as detailed and to scale like that my fingers would be more flamable than the tanks contents

Absolutely brilliant, Julia. And your speed of producing quality work rivals that of the legendary Mr. Harris. :-)

Hello Tom. I had a feeling you would pop up at some point! Well, you have an option, I have a second 'test' etch or you can wait until I get some more done with some minor revisions.

Thanks David, although I will never be as good at producing things as Stephen, that guy is a 2mm modelling genius! It has been 2 weeks from start to finish making this wagon though which isnt too shabby.

Hi Jerry. The Peckett has the revisions I talked to you about at York, namely a revised cylinder block thingy. I have a etch here which I can pass onto you next time we meet, unless you would like it sooner and I can post it?

Hello Paul. Its not anywhere as bad as you think. I didnt burn my fingers once building it, the secret is jigs and supports, holding bits in place while soldering. The kit design helps too, helping you align things while you solder them.

I still havent figured out a good, reliable, and repeatable way for soldering all the bits to the tank yet though. Right now its the hardest part of the kit and soldering bits to a large lump of Brass whilst keeping everything aligned was tough. I really need to come up with a much simpler way of doing all this if I ever build lots more of them.

Any ideas anyone?

Brilliant stuff as ever Missy and it looks like it builds into a lovely replica of the prototype.

These would be good scaled up to OO too as there is a distinct lack of decent tank models available other than the Bachmann or Airfix/Dapol offerings.

Going to be lovely seeing these lettered up and finished along with the point rodding of course! :D

Cheers,

Mark

Wow.... again.

Maybe a 3D printed jig for assembling complex soldered assemblies like these chassis?

Top stuff! Excellent modelling is always good to see, and as a self-confessed tank wagon perv, this is a particularly appealing subject :D You don't fancy etching up some monobloc tanks in 7mm scale, do you? ;)

So that'll be 4mm and 7mm then! ;)

Look forward to that. I will order up a body from shapeways when they are ready. Hopefully I will see you at Aylesbury Railex.

Hello Julia,

Is there any chance to purchase one or two of the tanker chassis?

I need to tweak the body a bit first Jerry, there are a couple of mods I need to do since trying to build one. It will make assembling it a little easier. Unfortunately I will not be at Railex this year, I have agreed to take Highclere to a show in Bideford for a good friend of mine which sadly clashes with Railex.

Hi Markus. Thats a good question! If you are desperate for a couple I could get some more test etches done but it will cost you (Im guessing around

Thanks Will.

Thats a good thought, hmmmm.

I have decided that if I can make a good reliable jig then there is no real need to get the tanks resin cast, the wagon is surprisingly heavy for its size. Of course I could also add some lead to the tank if I needed. This all relies on a jig really.

Hi Julia,

Liking the tank.

How about 3d printing the tank with any non-fragile detail included and dimples or holes to allow you to accurately position the other bits?

If you want large quantities then maybe use a 3d print as a master for resin casting.

Thats a good point Andy, thank you.

This has crossed my mind, even the possibility of using the 3D printed tank as the final version but for some reason I have been reluctant to do it (I dont know why!). My preference right now is to fabricate the tanks out of Brass and stuff, the second choice then would be to resin cast them which in that case a 3D printed tank would be great as a master.

I just dont know the answer to which one to do yet!

Hi Julia,

That looks incredible! I'm tempted to get out my 2mm association wagon kit (the one that comes with the trial pack) and try and build the chassis - if I can do that then I'm certainly tempted if you plan to produce more!

How are you getting on with your lining practice?

Hello Julia,

I wan't to built some anchor tanks like you. At the moment I plan to modify some Parkside Dundas Chassis, but I could wait some time.
