Treemendous...

Me again!

This weekend I havent had musch time (or inclination!) to carry on with the point rodding so instead the short time I had spare I had a go at something else...

These have been on my mind for a while now and as usual, the only solution was to experiment!

I have been growing my own asparagus fern for a while now and today was my first harvest. It needed doing as some of it has started to die off. Armed with this crop and a packet of Tescos finest bamboo skewers I attempted my first ever pine tree.

The bamboo skewer was cut to a more suitable length and then using my dremel I sanded it down to a tapered point at one end. Once I had cleaned up all the sawdust I then started at the base of the tree drilling a small hole through the trunk where I then superglued asparagus fern trimmings into the hole. I worked my way upto the top and once finished the whole tree was given a trim to tidy it up a little. To paint I gave the whole tree a base coat of brown (from an aerosol) and then the green (BR loco green!) was added with my airbrush.

Im very pleased with the results and at about an hour from start to finish it isnt that time consuming. Even close up it doesnt look too bad!

Nice work Missy and Elvis is going for the low key approach hiding behind your newly planted pine! :D

Cheers,

That looks great Julia. Certainly works for that type of tree!

Thanks guys :)

Nick, I didnt seal it, no but then there is plenty of paint on it so fingers crossed that should hold it together. Most of the fern was pretty dry already when I used it (see top photo)

Very nice indeed. It is giving me ideas for my 'Wyre Forest*' layout.. must resist until I get some more projects finished!

See 2mm scale section, 'any question answered'.. soon.

As ever Julia you take limited notice of what has gone before and go you own way - with great results.

I have been thinking about this a little Jerry and I dont know if thats a good or bad thing. The Peckett is a classic example of how frustrating it can be at times. It is nice sometimes to be 'unique' but I do think the majority of the time its nice to follow in other peoples footsteps. What do you think?

I think a combination of both. There are many areas of modelling where its pointless to try to re-invent the wheel. Methods and techniques have been refined over the years and been shown to work - a good example is your recent etched tank wagon which follows similar practices to other 2mm wagon chassis etches.

In other areas, where you are really pushing the boundaries, which much of your modelling does (the Peckett is a good example) then there is a need to experiment and try new ideas. With this it has to be accepted that not all these ideas will work, at least not first time and there will be frustrations along the way. The trick is not to allow these to set you back or get you down.

Personally, I find your modelling inspirational and very much hope that your free thinking style continues - even if not all the ideas come off.

Elvis did "Singing Trees" in that  Clambake movie but I can't find anything else - Oh Yes - Wooden Heart just comes to mind. I thought he might have done Oh Tannenbaum on a Christmas album but apparently not.

However, Gene Vincent recorded "In The Pines" on his "I'm Back and I'm Proud" CD.

All silly irrelevent info for yawl.

Thank you Jerry.

Sounds funny to hear that, especially as I find your stuff very inspiring.
