St Ruth at RailEx

Just back from RailEx with St Ruth all packed away safely. It was a very enjoyable show and an excellent mix of layouts to look at.

St Ruth behaved itself and performed well, including the new operators (Ian and Stephen). All four signals kept working for both days which is good news given our lack of mileage with them (and particularly the servo drives). The route indicator decided not to play on Saturday but was persuaded back into action today and was fine after that. I think that the new screens displaying info about the schedule were well received. By coincidence, St Merryn were also giving the first outing to a display screen explaining their operations to the public. There were a few minor niggles but I can't really think of any major problems and we certainly got plenty of positive comments from a knowledgeable audience.

Some photos... as usual not exactly comprehensive coverage.

Getting the legs levelled. Apparently the Stoke Mandeville floor is very level so in the end we used a ruler to set all of our adjustable feet to the same height.

Blurry photo of me fitting the signal that was only finished the previous day. Not my best side really.

Us in the RailEx hall. Jerry's Tucking Mill was the next layout along and Fencehouses behind us. With the Association stand we had quite a 2mm island going on.

The late Phil Kerr's KGV got an outing late this afternoon... appropriately with one of my Hawksworths in tow.

And I couldn't really leave without a taking some photos of the latest two items to make it out of my paint shop.

I didn't get out much but did manage to get a shot of Bucks Hill's remarkable backscene.

Although I didn't get chance to say hello Andy I was very impressed with St. Ruth (as with everything down in 2FS-land in the corner). Lovely job.

Thanks Andy. I just found the exhibition forum thread and saw on there several folks who were at the show but I didn't get to chat with them. Ah well it was a jolly good time anyway.

I'm looking at the pictures, and part of me still just can't accept that it is in 2FS. This is truly a wonderfully crafted and detailed layout, and KGV and the Warship are just the icing on a very spectacular cake.

A chap couldn't wish for better neighbours! A cracking weekend, St Ruth (Penzance!) looked and worked superbly. The only slight downside was that I didn't get time to 'borrow' a couple of engines for a trip down the North Somerset Light -  next time....:-)

Great show chaps-thanks for letting me camp out in the 2 mm 'corral'. St.Ruth, Tucking Mill and Fencehouses , together with Paula and the roadshow did 2mil proud.

Nice one Andy - Pleased the show went well.

Leaving the layout and going to visit the rest of the show can sometimes feel like the first time you leave a babysitter with the kids...time spent away is good but part of you wants to be back 'home' checking all is well ;)

Looking at the show thread photos, it did look like a cracker...

Blimey, that's real dedication posting on RMWeb at that hour. Thanks.

Thanks Jerry. Likewise on the neighbour thing. You did kind of borrow Ian's saddle tank and Ian himself too for a while though. Hope the suntan came out OK. Perhaps we can arrange things so that we can toast your other side next time.

It was good to see you Richard. I agree - all of the 2FS layouts looked superb although I didn't get to spend much time watching anything on them apart from the stuff running along the back of Fencehouses but it was good to have a close look at Bob and team's stock while it was stood still.

Yes, I know. It's doing it that's the difficult bit.

The main problem now is that we try to operate based on the 1960s timetable using a goods yard that the GWR gave up on in the 1930s so working the yard without snookering yourself and/or holding up the main lines is really difficult. I've worked out a shunting plan that fits in with the required arrivals and departures. It's printed out but I think that I'm the only person who can follow it just now... and it was a challenge for me too on Saturday morning since I haven't looked at it since last September.

Did it come out at 4am over there? It was only 1pm in Sydney, so not really dedication. However, I do stand by the comment I made.9 1/2 out of 10, with a 1/2 margin for error :)
