blog-0512392001393105251.jpgTroutons is the new 4mm Modern image layout of the Wakefield Model Railway Society. It features a Heljan container crane, booking on point and scrap yard. The aim is to provide viewers with typical trains that would be seen passing through West Yorkshire. After the Wakefield show the team are now busily upgrading stock ready for the next exhibition. A log of progress can be found on the layout section of a RMweb.

This blog is focused on detailing and weathering examples of the steel carrier wagons.

The first entry is based around the Bachmann BZA steel carrier.

The following images were taken of the main line running through Cardiff whilst visiting daughter at a University Feb 2013. There were a succession of heavy steel and coal trains running throughout the day, mainly EWS livery Class 66 haulage. These images show the variety of loading coils onto the wagons.

The images will form the basis for the detailing and weathering.

Not a lot of time this evening to carry out some modelling but did manage to apply base colour of dark rust shadow and dry brush with burnt rust, light shadow and oxidation system powder. All colours from the Life colour rust and dust set

Bogie frames light coating of frame dirt with small amount of brake dust added

Cradles have been added and additional eroded burnt rust added to centre wells to create impression of rust that collects there.

Friday 24 th back on bogies and metal bands fitted around the coils. I think it sits well with an impression of weight. Next steps include adding representation of the securing pins of cradles to wagon bed, they look like they were yellow originally, washes of back and some more earth tones on bogies and some work on the bogies.

Using a small punch bolt heads produced and in place ready for a dab of yellow

More or less complete, needs to sit awhile

26th Jan new project. OCA which will have a wire coil load.

29th Jan this evening is an attempt to model an OCA loaded with rebar. Found some thin wire that has the look of rebar. Cannot remember where from.

Using Northeastern lumber for the wooden batons that would keep the load from the floor.

Completed load awaiting weathering

Load weathered and light rust added to the wagon. Have some smaller off cuts that shape into angled rebar for another load.

2nd Feb that time of year again and with a cold snap lungs starting to shut down again but means can get a few hours modelling so completed the last of the OCA steel carriers.

Used up the last of the off cuts and made into angled rebar and decided that third OCA should be heavily weathered and so could be still in engineers service or pressed back into steel carriying

An early morning rise to something I ate disagreeing with me meant some modelling before work today. Frame and bed of carrier base coat of frame dirt with touches of eroding burnt rust powder added where the cradles will sit

Winding down from a hard week at work wind and heavy rains seems to send the kids nuts so time to open a can and do a little bit of modelling

Like an idiot applied a light layer of rust powder to coils before adding bands and need to add yellow to securing pins to cradles and lightly weather and a 2nd BZA will be ready to enter service.

Found in the spares, forgot I had it drawer 2 Cambrian Models SPA kits that will fettle and using images as references from Martin Read and Andy Jupe websites will convert into EWS livery

Trip to York and Monkbar Models meant purchase of EWS gold so gold band and base rust layers added. Realised have no EWS transfers so order needs to be placed before completing all weathering so yet more wagons move onto " the to be completed" shelf!

Joking at the prototype photos need to thin out the end plate and the 5 bolt holes which are on the real wagon used to secure the side rail. A new but narrower side rail needs to made and then the bolster side frames which look like 80x 80 thou evergreen strip will do the job. The floor bolsters seem to be made from U channel as opposed to solid material as on the BDA

Locating holes for old bolsters have been filled with filler and the side stanchions cut to length using 80 x 80 thou evergreen strip and tops angled as per the prototype.

One of the side stanchions and bolsters added. Will need to fill in with strip where the original bolsters where. Have found a couple of images of a well travelled wagon looking just right for a trip to the wagon works for some tlc. Will give opportunity to add bracing and packing pieces as well as securing straps etc

Body basically complete and after a bit of a clean up ready to be mated back with its underframe and the basic paint colours applied

Base colour used. It is Wisconsin Central maroon rather than EWS paint but does seem to provide a good base on which to develop the darker weathering tones required.

Yellow tops and later of frame dirt and burnt black to the body work. Last bit of modelling until a big work job completed.

Additional layer of frame dirt/ brown added and underframe and bogies onto the body. Packing pieces, securing straps, and what looks bits of old gaff a tape around stanchions to be added

Painted up basswood strip , masking tape to create idea of packing pieces, securing straps and tatty bits of old masking tape that the in service wagons seem to have

Link to comment

Strips cut out and mounted onto the stanchions, basswood strips added and strips of masking tape cut to represent the securing straps

Base colour to bogies, body has track dirt, frame dirt, oil and grease stains all combined with earth wash. Needs to completely dry before adding the earth mix

Link to comment

Dried overnight and I think just needs some selective rust chipping and a little more oil and grease stain and good to go. Will weather up the other three in the rake in a similar fashion
