Kyle 2014 - you've been framed...

Good evening,

A quick update on progress this week following the initial entry last week and very encouraging comments.

Decided to take on board Rich B's idea (thank you Sir) for losing the corner post to the right hand end and cantilevering the fascia to complete the corner. That corner was troubling me somewhat as it would have meant covering up a part of the dockside in addition to looking like there was a piece of back scene missing.

I sketched out the components and laser cut them at the office using 2mm grey card to match the previous fascias constructed in BCN. Mid week I brought them home and did a quick dry assemble and as initially feared the 2mm grey card was not up to the cantilever despite me notching the corner joint. I also realised that the 25mm top band was a little too thin and needed increasing in size to 50mm.

The mods were made to the CAD file at work at I recut the pieces the next lunch time, checking the same evening with another dry assembly. This seemed to work a lot better so this weekend I began to fit in place with PVA.

I also removed the back-scene and after a quick email exchange with Chris Nevard he recommended getting it printed directly onto 2mm or 3mm foamex - I need to give a few calls this week to get some quotes as it looks like it don't come cheap :O

As part of the assembly, small formers have been made which will carry the IKEA lights above. Am thinking I will now make this unit removable to allow access to the layout.

Overall, I am pleased with the new fascia and the initial photos with the lights shows it will make a difference even if it ends up a static diorama. It's funny to see the back scene with the old blue sky in place as I think the photographic back scene really helped give it context.

Here's a few pics to go with the above description.

Any comments most welcome as usual.

Pete

That does the job nicely but I think you are right about the backscene. Nice to see Kyle back that dock wall is so nicely modelled.

Thats certainly spruced it up nicely.   How great it must be to have a laser cutter at your office!

Hi Pete, this does look good. I like the way the upper parts interlock, very neat (but then it would be, it is you after all!).

I'm probably a minority, but I rather like that blue background! When I see a sky background, my mind automatically blanks it out so that I focus on the layout itself. But it's probably just me!

Good to see you back on here. Was worried that Beeching might have visited Kyle. The fascia looks very smart and really adds to the presentation

Excellent stuff, Pete.

Forgotten what a delight that station building and dockside wall was.  Really neat fascia - but again, as Mikkel has already said, tidy and precise presentation is your specialty.

Great to have you back.

It looks very neat; very tidy; well designed, engineered, constructed and presented. But then again, I'd expect nothing less ;-) well done Pete; good to see "Kyle in a letterbox style"

Thanks Don - I think that's why I couldn't bring myself to throw it...the numerous hours and attempts at the water, the station building etc...

Still a great piece of work, nice to see it back.

Thanks Alex...

Thanks Tom - 2mmFS is in my blood now... ;)

Thanks Wyvern - yes, every job has to have a few perks I guess...there are few people in the office who benefit from it as much as I do ;)

Thanks Russ - You just couldn't resist could you...nice one!...

Fantastic stuff Pete, really nice to see the new and improved Kyle.

Thanks Bryn - Good to see you posting on here again Sir too :good:

Thanks Mikkel - I kinda like it too...but I won't open it to the floor like I did previously as it all got a bit confusing afterwards...its certainly cheaper than a foamex printed one (minimum

Looking good Pete.

After trying the Ikea lights I found the self-adhesive '5050' strips that can be had on eBay chuck out a lot more light for the money so it might be worth you taking a look at those. The downside for you is that they are not rigid so you need some sort of rigid backing to fix them to. You will also need to do some soldering but I'm guessing that your current scheme will need multiple Ikea power supplies, so having a single beefier supply might be worth a bit of soldering.

Regards, Andy

I find that some lighting needs to be right at the front of the layout, or even slightly forward of it, to avoid shadows, especially if trains run close to the front of the layout.

Thanks Andy - Will have a look at them, although I have quite a few of the Ikea ones from previous projects! For my MW viaduct comp entry I wired three together so I would probably do the same to save some sockets on the extension lead :D

Thanks Ian - I am planning three light strips and the dockside siding is inboard so hopefully there will be enough coverage...
