Its strange how things work out, the original plan was to use my current modelling mojo and build a couple of 22xx Collett engines but as my last post showed, it didnt go according to plan so I was left with having to remake the chassis and order some new coupling rods. So, I thought, I will turn my attention to my Q1 which has been looking a little worse for wear sitting in my stock box, I thought I could get this working once again (it has never worked 100%). This didnt work out as I was short of some parts so it meant I couldnt do anything with that. I was starting to worry a little now as I wanted to build an engine but then I remembered I had enough parts to make another engine, a 14xx...

As you can see from above progress is going reasonably well with the chassis nearly finished and my attention has now turned to the Dapol body. To date I have cut off all the moulded handrails and started fitting new metal ones, cut out the moulded coal and added some plasticard ready for the real stuff, and made a new cab roof out of metal. The biggest change I think has come from chopping away the it under the boiler and making the lower part of the boiler from a piece of plastic tube. I did something similar to the Farish pannier tank and it really makes the difference I think.

I have tried a few new techniques (well, to me anyway!) on the chassis. The first was to shot blast and paint the chassis before assembly which does help, the second being to ream out the holes in the muffs using 1.51 and 1.52mm drills until the wheels are a 'hand fit' and not a 'press them in really hard' fit like they have been in the past. This has helped assembly lots so I will be using this in the future. (Everyday is a school day!) The gearing didnt work out quite according to plan and I ended up using what gears I had lying around, this has meant though that somehow I have managed to get a gear ratio of roughly 80:1 using standard 2mmSA imperial gears fitted! Anyway, there is still lots to do on the engine including trying to cram in as much weight as possible which will be interesting because there isnt exactly much room inside...

 

Something else I have been 'experimenting' with are some 4mm NG driving wheels.

 think we have all been there with projects waiting on bits. I do like the 14xx it is coming on nicely. Should be a bit of room in the boiler/smokebox or were you hoping to stick a decoder in there. It is funny you don't think the lack of daylight under the boiler will show until you see a model where someone has modified it.

4mm n.g. wheelsets eh, I'll watch with interest.

I made up some recently for a split frame chassis (outside framed) using Parkside tyres pressed onto turned brass bosses, fitted with silver steel stub axles which located into Acetal muffs. Worked quite well.

Trust me it does make a big difference and I would really recommend the extra effort. Thats two I have done now and I will do it again if I needed to. The boiler / smokebox already has a coil of lead inside it but I need to balance the weight out a little and add some towards the back of the engine. The motor takes up quite a bit of room and as you say, there is a decoder to fit at some point too.

Yes, 4mm spoked driving wheels. The way I tried to do them today didnt quite work out so I need to have a rethink as to the best way to make them. I kie your idea of chopping up some propriety wheels but I dont think anyone makes them this small. I have everything I need to make them, its just figuring out how to!

The smallest Parkside make is 5.1mm dia., too big for you and you'd need to re-profile them anyway. I use Parkside tyres (for OO9) as I haven't got a profiling tool, and my Unimat probably isn't rigid enough to use one on. Araldite works on Acetal I've found, although its not supposed to apparently...

 

Cutting out daylight under the boiler - takes me back to my teenage years butchering Jintys.

I thought that about my little seig c0 lathe as well and I even had big trouble trying to turn some steel bar I got from B&Q once. I then found some EN1A BMS on ebay which is an absolute joy to machine, highly recommended. Its just like machining Brass!

EN3b is good as well, but avoid EN8. (I used to turn for a living). My SL is a good little machine, but does have its limits, parting off anything over 10mm dia. is a bit fraught for example. Fits on the dining table though, and is fine the work I use it for.

I thought that you had a c3?

Nooo, I have a rather badly adjusted C0. Its more than ample for 2mm stuff.

 

Fortunately The rims by thier very nature are thin so there isnt much material to part off. Doing a 10mm solid bar would be fun, yes!

Thats interesting.

 

Its the standard chimney which was fitted to the Dapol model. I have heard its an odd shape but wasnt really aware its that bad? I am guessing from that comment it is then? Any ideas on where I can get a better looking one?

I think 69843 was referring to the screw fitted where the chimney should be on the left hand loco.... :scratchhead:

 

But if you find somewhere that sells suitable chimneys, then I'd be interested in one as my bargain 14xx body (

Ahhhh, sorry.

 

I think I have got the wrong end of the stick here. Yes, the chimney on the N Gauge version has been 'temporarily' stolen to fit on the 2mm version. Its one of the benefits of having various 14xx bits floating around. I thought for a moment there, that I will have to start chopping the thing about to try and make something good from it!

Someone told me (I cannot remember who) that the N Brass 1F chimney was as close as they had seen a casting for. I can't vouch for it because I haven't tried it.

 

Put all the weight at the front. You need as much as possible over the driving wheels. Is the black one next in the shops?

Great stuff as ever Julia. I have been given a small bag of copper-tungsten slugs which are just the ticket for maximising weight although they are a to machine. I'll try to remember to bring you up a few when we come up for the Abingdon show in a few weeks..

That looks good Julia.It is possible to get these little engines to run well but the weight has to be in the right place as Rich rightly says. My boiler is full of lead (skirts removed as yours) and I have plenty in the tanks over where the worm sits. As much is possible is needed to counterbalance the motor and put the weight over the driving wheels. There is a bit of room between the frames in front of the front drivers, but one of the nice things about cutting those plastic skirts away is the nice view under the boiler of the unfettered frames and wheels and the track below. Stuart Bailey has done a couple with the boiler removed completely and a new one turned out of (I think) tungsten. Whatever it is it weighs a ton. I have thought about a turned metal chimney and dome to add a bit more weight but mines runs quite well (I've proudly shown you the video!) and will only ever be asked to pull an autocoach. But who am I to give you advice? Such impertinence!

There is certainly some useful information there. Apart from adding some lead to the boiler, I havent tried to add anymore anywhere else yet but I will take a closer look over this comming weekend. The tungsten alloy slugs sound interesting Jerry, I am comming along to the NG show this weekend so I will bring it along to show you. The cast Brass chimney and dome sound a great idea too. I will have to look at the 1F chimney as Rich mentioned, I dont think I have the patience to machine one though halfwit!
