XP 64 Project

PaternosterRow

A little project to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. I always loved the red flash double arrow logo and wish BR had adopted it for the whole of the corporate era.

There's certainly a lot of life left in these old Lima models. I spent a lot of time trying to match the colour BR had first used - turquoise blue - and eventually found this colour. It's not a perfect match and seeing how I'm limited to using spray cans (I haven't yet plucked up the courage to go buy an air brush) it was the closest I could find. The transfers are from Railtec and are brilliant, but fell apart when I used my particular brand of matt varnish - good job I bought two sets!

I wished I'd had sprayed the yellow panel - it was hand painted with Humbrol Insignia Yellow and turned out a bit lumpy. I should have removed the square headlamp and also wished I'd have gone for flush glazing. However, for only my second loco bash I'm pleased with the result.

Happy Birthday XP 64.

Air brushes are really fun and work brilliantly with acrylics but I didn't find this out until I had bought a decent compressor!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

I think I'm going to have to go lump up the cash for an airbrush if I'm going to take this bashing business seriously.

Hi Mike, a lovely loco, full of character. Interesting to see how well it works in two very different layout settings. I agree with Job about the second photo - it all comes together so nicely.

I think I might copycat you on the airbrush in due course, very tempting if indeed they do work well with acrylics.

Hi Alan, hope you are well too?  Thanks for your kind comments, but where's my Oswestry fix!??  Hope to really see some more progress soon.

Thanks also, Mikkel.  I read George Dent's brilliant loco detailing book recently and he has a good section on airbrush technique.  He does state, however, that spray can paint, like the Railmatch range, doesn't deliver as good a finish as an airbrush.  I used a cheap Craft type spray picked up from Homebase and it seemed to work fine - just one pass from about 18 inches away.  Mind you, the Lima had already been resprayed a Matt Grey by the time I got my hands on it - so it might just be a simple matter of priming first.  I'm definately thinking about getting an airbrush though, but it seems to be all about getting a really good compressor and high quality brush.  The cheap ones are out if you want a really good finish - so it'll be a costly investment.  I'm also told that modern acrylic paint is better to use than the oil based stuff nowadays.  Probably down to personal preference in the end.

Great bit of modelling, painting and photography.

Regarding the BR experimental turquoise blue, what reference were you trying to match? Do you have an original reference/paint for this?

Hi David,

The only reference I had was an article in Rail Express from last year for the anniversary of XP64.  It mentioned Turquoise blue.  I simply carried the picture with me to the local DIY store and matched up the paint.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

Incidentally,  this colour would be a good representation for sun faded BR blue locos.  I don't even have the tin any longer so can't give you the make etc.

Thanks for the kind comments by the way.

Hi David,

further to my last comment - I found the tin!!  It is - RUST-OLEUM PAINTER'S TOUCH Craft Enamel - Acrylic C&H Ocean Blue 150ml tin. I bought it in Homebase and it was the nearest match to the colour I was after.  Just sprayed the model lightly with it in a gentle sweep at about 15 inches away.  Seemed to do the job nicely.  Hope that helps.

Mike
