Dabbling in 3rd rail in 2mm finescale

cornish trains jez

Good evening,

Just before Christmas I bought the wonderful Farish 4 CEP in blue/grey livery. A superb model and I'd wanted to get one ever since I had a play with BCN Pete's model on his Paddock Wood bay layout.

I decided to buy some concrete sleepers and some flat bottom rail form the 2FS shop and set out to produce a mini diorama for the unit and hopefully run it. My wife has suggested on several occasions to model something more local alongside my Cornish work in progress layout so I drew up a plan for West Worthing (one of my local stations) using templot on top of a Google Earth printout of the area. This was then printed and the first half was glued on to a 1.2m long board topped with plywood.

The sleepers were then glued down individually (I must be bonkers!) and then spray painted a concrete colour.

Then the rail threaded and painted.

The third rail was then added using BCN Pete's technique from his Paddock Wood layout. I decided to use bullhead rail for the third rail the width seemed to mirror the prototype quite well being wider than the main running rails themselves if this make sense.

Quite pleased with how it's turned out so far.

Anyway,

Back to the pub for my Cornish layout now!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy.

Looking good so far!

Is there a reason you decided to glue down the sleapers individually, apart from insanity!

Thanks Tom. I laid the sleepers individually as the templot plan sleeper spacing was slightly wider than the spacing on each easitrac sprue. I doubt I'll do it again as it was a nightmare threading the rail onto them!

I can imagine! Did you fix the sleapers in place and then thread the rail? I've tried that in the past and found that passing the rail along gets progressivly harder, and you then run the risk of bending the rail or damaging the chairs.

If the insanity strikes again can I suggest the following with a section of easitrac still fixed to the sprue cut the webs between the sleepers on the side close to the sprue slide the the rail through on that side. Cut the sprue off and the webs on the outside. Adjust the sleeper spacing and fix down. Then do  the same with the next bit of easitrac. Once a reasonable length has been done slide the other piece of rail in. Having one side already threaded with the rail keeps the sideways alignment of the sleepers.

Good result anyway.

I did and it was a nightmare to thread the rail, like you say it gets progressively harder. I did bend the rail so I had to cut the end off and thread a new piece from the other end.

I'll probably give that a go however I may thread both rails, then cut the webbing and adjust each sleeper individually as I stick them down.

Great stuff Jeremy and thanks for the mentions too.

I am worried you have also inherited my 'serial layout project builder' affliction (what happened to the swiss layout?) :D although I am now cured having decided to try and finish one project first ;)

Do you have a plan to show us the scope of your diorama?

I agree, its a lovely model and I bought mine and only built Paddock Wood as a back drop for it...

Carry on the good work.... :good:

Thanks Pete! I'm terrible with my serial projects however I plan to get Par finished this year and this is just a "bit on the side" really. I'll do another blog post with a plan soon.

It would be nice to see a few more Southern Electric EMU's in rtr form. I think Hornby or Bachmann have released the 4 VEP so maybe they will shrink it to N too!

Agreed - if Bachman shrink the 2EPB and motor luggage van it may stir some reawakenings...maybe its best they don't at the moment :D
