Basically copying what Graham said above, Looking Good!  The lighting really does set the mood along with the back scene.

 

Hopefully I can create a similar mood on Rannoch when I get around to doing the scenic boards.

Thanks Graham - the main reason for using the 47 is that I have sent my 24/26/27 and 37 wheels all to Mr Solloway for turning down so it's one of the few locos I have with 2FS wheels Basically, I have fallen behind with re wheeling locos so I have a backlog that need converting so am picking off the more immediate ones requiring attention.One day I hope to make the break to DCC but it's a question of available surplus cash at present...meantime I am doing the lotto every week

Thanks also Martin - I think with the lighting, Jerry's point about getting it in early to allow the scenics/colours to be matched to that is a very valid point - I need to look at this in more detail as my screwfix additions are a bit late to the Kyle party...

I definitely think that some lighting in the fiddle yard is a good plan. Sports halls are one thing but last year we were up on the stage at St Albans. Fairly subdued overhead lighting and the wall behind us painted black - we couldn't see a thing when anything needed doing in the fiddle yard.

 

I've not come across the Screwfix strips. Are these LEDs too? How do they compare in terms of output with the Ikea stuff?

Hi Andy - yes they are LED's - they seem quite bright (can't recall what the IKEA ones were now) and here's a link to the one I used...usual disclaimer satisfied customer so far etc...

I would advise forgetting about DCC at the moment not something to change with an exhibition looming.  The croc clips should be fine and you can easily isolate any road. I may get to the exhibition I would like a chance to see this in the flesh.

Definately no chance of DCC at the moment Don! Yes the croc clips are not that glamourous and may be swapped out for brass rods that sleeve into the tube but am now going to turn my attention to the scenics and rolling stock.

Would be good to finally meet you if you come along...I think we were in the same room at the 2010 2mm EXPO but never crossed paths...we might even had been standing side by side watching the same layouts

The letterbox effect is very attractive, that whole way of presenting a fiddle yard is pretty innovative I think. Don't hide it, highlight it!

 

I hadn't really thought about the open right-hand end before, but it's a good illustration that we don't really need scenic breaks at both ends of a layout. The eye is willing to accept a sudden visual cut-off point as long as it carefully considered.

Many thanks Mikkel - think I will leave the 2mm Moses off incase there is a sudden change in the water of the Loch

 

In terms of the letterbox, it came from the 'how do you turn a problem into a feature' concept...the need to slide the tray out further than the skinny limits allowed but realising it could serve as a teaser. I wonder as well whether subconsciously it also came from the BHMRC 'Thornbury Hill' layout (still on the circuit) which has two 6ft train turntables at each end and periodically the punters are warned 'mind your heads' as they are turned 180 degrees...who knows

 

The original Kyle built 2010 had a 90 degree end return which restricted photos somewhat - all credit to Rich Brummitt for suggesting I lose the end support, cantilever the corner and keep the end open...

Funny you should mention 156... I remember I bought a RR 156 for this which might just get to stretch its legs on the layout at the end of the day.
