Those chassis do take a while to put together Pete, so 4 hours doesn't seem terrible to me.

 

Not all of the chassis kits are created equal either - some go together comparatively quickly and without problems while others seem quite resistant to going together... just don't plan on too many steel bodied 'High's

Many thanks David - it could become addictive this wagon making.As mentioned, any shots of Kyle usually contain lines of vans, especially the mirror side of the station.

Thanks also Andy - yes, there is definitely some things that went together better second time around but I think I need more practice before I tackle SH's kits.

I was talking about the Association chassis kits, of which some are better than others.

 

Stephen Harris's kits have a good reputation but I can only comment from experience on the 35T oil tanks. These have a lot of bits (as you would expect with such a vehicle) but if you are methodical and follow the instructions they go together very well.

Andy, hi - yes I realised what you meant...I just didn't articulate my reply very clearly...situation has now remedied following two large espressos

I'm a sucker for vans too, which is why I've got a semi-Wisbech & Upwell themed layout. Hasn't modern N gauge stock got good?  I've still got several 2mm van kits to finish off so need to avoid temptations like these!

Hi Mark - Agreed - I am still finding my way in to 2FS so essentially I am firstly rewheeling rtr stock, and secondly replacing chassis where I can...would be nice to replace all the coaching stock with 2FS bogies one time too...thereafter, am hoping to tackle 2FS kits - the 08 kit would be a good milestone!

The "spidery elegance" of the etched chassis certainly knocks the RtR ones into the proverbial cocked hat!

Very nice.  I agree that putting together wagon chassis does take a bit of time - I've almost finished 3 more for some badly needed open wagons, just got to solder on the door bangers (and mine only have brakes on one side and no vacuum stuff to contend with).  I generally don't measure the amount of time it takes me to do anything (I think it would be too depressing :-) ), I know these 3 have taken a bit of time over 3 evenings.

Looks like a pretty good Easter! I agree with Mickey, the chassis really make a difference. As for the time it takes, maybe old-fasioned to say it, but it seems to me that the more time we put into a model the better the results are. So no need to do it quicker :-)

Thanks also Ian - this is all encouraging news with regard to time taken to assemble the kits - I suspect I am measuring time due to the number of days left until the exhibition as in reality its probably only a handful of days if I add up all the separate hours I will get between now and then - am enjoying following your blog too...

Thanks Mark - am now trialling vari-focal contact lenses as my eyes have taken the next level of deterioration

Thanks Graham - for the moment I have kept them as is - I used to add weight to wagons a long time ago but not sure if that is the done thing these days. Once I have added the DG's I will see how they perform when being pushed...
