Great Coates sidings No 1

I'm planning my next layout Great Coates sidings No1 which is the junction at Grimsby with lines to the left going to Immingham via the light railway and lines to the right going to Grimsby dock. It will be built in OO with peco code 75 track and based around the early to mid 90's onwards, this will allow a vast amount of rail traffic to be modelled. So far the wagon list is as follows, this is the docks traffic so far ...

the imported coil traffic will be large semi finished coil to Shepcote Lane and Panteg for finishing and finished coil(wrapped in plastic sheet) to Wolverhampton , Brierley Hill etc.. this allows the use of the same wagons

BWA X 6 Cambrian BBA with 5 Colin Craig cradles - imported coil

BOA x 5 Cambrian BDA underframe new floor, 3 Colin Craig cradles / handbuilt end cradles - imported coil

BXA x 1 Bachmann BAA 3 Colin Craig cradles / handbuilt end cradles - imported coil

BZA x 3 Bachmann BAA 5 Colin Craig cradles - imported coil

BAA x 1 Bachmann BAA 4 wooden cradles - imported coil

SPA X 5 FTG 3 wooden cradles - imported coil

BNX x 3/5 maybe handbuilt - imported coil

BVW x 3/5 maybe handbuilt - imported coil

BMA x 3 Cambrian - export slab

BDA x 3 Bachmann - export slab

BDA x 4 Bachmann - export pipe from Dunlop Marine to Germany

MEA x 11 Bachmnn - iron sulphate from Truro to Grimsby docks in jumbo bags

plus any other steel traffic i can find! so if anyone can add any information on other steel wagons

that may have been used to carry imported coil or slab to the docks i would be gratefull. Did VTG KIA run to the docks ? as i've got 6 of them and having seen footage of the running through Barnetby so could use them.

Traffic on the Immingham light railway

poss 15 X PSO tipplers to Tioxide

3 x TTA to Courtalds

2 x RFQ brake van adaptors with 3 x PTA iron ore cripples

Light engine movements to/from Immingham

Diversions via Great Coates Junction

So if you have any information about any traffic around this area please post!

Looks like an interesting project. Does the line still see much use? The tracks look pretty rusty and neglected in the lower photo. Alan.

You have chosen a great location, full of atmosphere. Whilst not in regular use, it serves as a diversion for traffic out of the Immingham Docks complex when the usual line to Brocklesby is not available, so you may also consider coal and tank traffic as well as what you have detailed above. If I remember rightly, there was also a weekly train from Grimsby Dock which ran for a time with a class 60 pulling vans (maybe VGA but I stand to be corrected!). There were also a number of stored hoppers in one of the outer sidings which spent years there before being cut up on site. Despite living about five minutes drive away, only recently managed to travel through there by train, on the Humber Sceptre railtour. Good luck with your project! Nigel.

thank you all for your comments and info, will soon post some pics of  the items so far made for the layout. Regarding the VGA wagons your prob correct as i read somewhere that they worked with VAA ,VBA on the zinc block traffic to bloxwich so may look out for some cheap vans prob need about 5.

Only just stumbled upon this having spotted the link from your Slab loading thread. I have driven along the A180 loads of times, glanced down and thought what a lovely little model it would make.

Great idea, hope you carry it through some day.

I've been looking at this as a potential to model myself recently. Interested to know if you ever built this? The above info on steel traffic very useful in addition to what I'd already managed to gleen.

Hello Paul ,

This location has a lot of potential and interest , one of those locations crying out to be modeled  , as for as building this as a layout i've not managed to make a start , maybe something in the future when i get some room  or make the junction more of a diorama  , although i bought all the track for it  , most of this has been used on other projects ,. I would expect the scenic section to be around 7ft long from the signal box to the road bridge , but probably in two sections as 7 ft too long to move around . I have done and continue to do plenty of research , if your interested i can post a list of the most of the steel  traffic , workings , wagons ( inc some of the pools ) etc..  that i have researched , you may be amazed by the amount of wagon types used over the years i intend to model ( 1988 - 1990's )

Regards Barrie

Hi again Barrie,

Yes I certainly would be interested in any more specific info on steel trafic here that you have. I have finally made a start on the project. I made the models of the signalbox and cleveland bridge a while back the boxes at the other end are where the A180 will be, the scenic area will be between these two natural scenic breaks.  Have the up/down - Light railway/Union dock branch done as inner and outer circuits. Siding will follow as third outside road  with a loop along the back and another siding cuved round the end nearest the camera. More storage sidings on the inside edge of the fiddle yard for shorter trains leaving via marsh junction and those on union dock.

Regards Paul.
