kyle 2015: short back and sides...

Afternoon all,

3 months since last post :O Actually have been suffering the post exhibition dip, loss of mojo and snowed at work...however, am on hols for a couple of weeks now so might try to make some headway. My two boys also want me to progress their 4mm shelf layout too which I promised I would do.

Following the one day exhibition at Burgess Hill I have now had confirmation of invite to this years Uckfield exhibition which I am rather excited about. One of the main objectives was to give the layout support structure a trim as it was using the system built by my brother for the Paddock Wood layout two years before. That was a longer layout having a fiddle yard at either end.

The overall length was 2500mm and considering the total length of KoL is approximately 1500mm, it was clear that there could be some pruning. I produced some simple diagrams which proved that shaving 500mm off each end would do the job as well as make the support structure lighter and take up less room in the back of the car. To compensate for this I will build a small wooden deck that will sit between the Draper legs and act as a platform to stand on...this will help my youngest son who spent most of the time at the BH exhibition standing on the base supports as this gave him an added 150mm or so to look over the back scene.

I have also been drafting a small flyer leaflet of information that could be sent to exhibition managers if the layout is of interest...This gives an overview of the layout in addition to the space requirements for the set up. I have included the short version here so you can see the modifications, all of which will be hidden courtesy of the black sheet which sits below the layout to complete the display.

I have cut the excess timber off this afternoon and will start to make the lower support structure this week. I am also hoping to start work on a 24/1 conversion having bought a s/h class 24 off e-Bay recently....that and building 5 Stephen Harris 2mmFS mermaid kits :O

In other news, the layout was recently visited by Chris Nevard...watch this space on that one ;)

Hi Pete,

Great to see a post on Kyle. ;)

Sounds like the 'pruning' will be an effective space saver.

I do like the expo flyer as well and it has the trademark illustrations :D

Looking forwards to seeing work on the 24/1 and those Mermaids which sound a bundle of joy to make... :O

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Pete,

Nice flyer, but I think it needs a bit of explanation (in the flyer) about why the person appears to be levitating. The expedition managers might be a bit puzzled.

Regards, Andy

Excellent presentation on the flyer, gives me some ideas! The photo works well too, makes a micro look altogether pretty big!

That photo Pete - it looks so good.  I thought you'd found an atmospheric shot of the actual station - then I noticed the coupling on the CCT and realised just how good the model was.  Thought I'd delurk to tell you.

Thanks Mark - the rolling stock items are not essential for the exhibition but would be nice to haves...let's see what I can get done...

Thanks Andy - the levitating is perhaps a prompt to make sure there is enough cake at the show for exhibitors :D

Thanks Will - it's proving pretty hard to get some pics as its so narrow!

Thanks Kevin - always great to see you post on here - perhaps I will try and hone my photoshop skills and lose that coupling!...

Good spot...there's a low slung shelf (omitted for clarity) that hangs beneath the layout that started out as a idea for a controller shelf...but is actually the perfect size for a pre mixed Gin Tonic...that 3pm reviver ;)

Very neat and professional Pete as expected. I would add the words viewing side to the diagram as my first reaction to the term circulating area was as where the viewing public would go.

Regards Don

Hi Pete, sorry to hear it's snowing at work - same thing here, must be climate change. I hope you've enjoyed some time off.

Congratulations on the Uckfield invite and the visit from Mr Nevard, sounds like Kyle is getting the attention it so deserves!

Many thanks for your kind comments Mikkel...it's been nice to be off this week...even if the London weather has resembled that of the Kyle back scene :)
