Scenery part 2 Hedgerows

I've continued to work on the layout's scenery, laying more static grass fibres at the back of the layout. I want to have a hedge running alongside the lane that leads down from the road bridge into Sherton Abbas, so armed with some rubberised horsehair I made a start. The horse hair was cut into strips and then teased apart to make a loose open latticework of fibres.

In order to represent fine twigs, 6mm long static grass fibres were applied to the horse hair. These were held in place by spraying the horsehair with Humbrol Enamel matt varnish from an aerosol spray can.

The horsehair is quite pale in colour, so in order to better represent the colour of the hedge's branches and twigs they were sprayed with a dark brown acrylic paint.

Once the paint had dried the horse hair was glued in position at the top of the embankment, alongside the lane using PVA glue. The horsehair was then spayed with matt enamel varnish and while wet sprinkled with fine flock from the Greenscene range. Postiche theatrical hair was used to form brambles at the base of the hedge and flowers and weeds were added as per my previous blog entry.

I'm finding it very satisfying finally getting some colour and textures onto the layout. It's the kind of project that doesn't involve too much thinking and is the perfect way in my opinion to spend a wet and windy day in Wales! The hedgerow needs a few trees adding to it and so I've been twisting wire armatures in preparation for making some.

Best wishes

Dave

I know I keep commenting, but this is really coming along nicely ...

I must bring my thrustingly modern 4575 Prairie down for a trundle, Dave. Before you know it it'll be the Bristol O Gauge show again, won't it?

Hi Al, glad you like the progress!:-)  Both you and your Prairie would be most welcome any time, though quite what the inhabitants of Sherton Abbas would make of such a glimpse into their future is another matter!  Thoroughly looking forward to the Bristol show, I can't believe another year has flown by since the last one!
