JNA Falcons - more modern N gauge weathering

Continuing on a modern theme...

These 3 JNA Falcon infrastructure wagons are from Dapol, picked up last week to go with my EWS 66. Weathered as usual using oil paint washes and powders. Burnt umber was liberally applied inside the wagons, and left to try for a bit - then dragged around with a large flat brush dampened with a touch of thinners to give a streaky rusted effect. I then added Mig 'light dust' powder inside. I was going to add a load, but I'm not so sure whether I will or not now.

I found one of them wouldn't run without derailing - a look underneath showed some plastic flash on one of the bogies. Sliced off with a sharp knife and all was well again! There was also some flash present on the buffers, again worth looking out for if you've any waiting for some time on the workbench.

Also of note, I'm giving the Dapol magnetic couplers another try on my modern stock. The non-NEM Farish 66 was an easy conversion - pop off the bogie and superglue into the Rapido slot!

Nice work n the Falcons Steve, it's amazing what a coat of weathering does to tone down the plasticky finish! I'm tempted to get my four out and have a stab at them now.

I don't know if you have from the angle of the shots, but something to consider if running empty is small amounts of ballast in the corners where the bucket can't always reach

Thats a very good idea Jo, just enough to show they are working wagons but running empty. Cheers! The coat of purity seal varnish really helps tone down the finish too, I think.

Thanks!

I seal them with varish after using the oils - you have to be careful not to be too abrasive with the brush or cotton buds when your wiping the wash away as it can remove printed details if you aren't careful though! But a bit of care and it's no dramas. The varnish coat gives the powders something to 'key' onto as well, I find.

I actually added another JNA to this rake last night :)
