Had a really good weekend at the Nailsea show running Wheal Elizabeth for the last time under my stewardship.
Ran a good selection of trains and spent most of this afternoon finishing off where it all started, with the more modern clay trains. Usually we don't get the time to run as much of them as we'd like, so it was really nice to make some time today.
Geof kindly make a selection of head boards for the various works shunters, Minion, Jamie and Treffry.
The last train was a single brake van hauled by the blue class 08 shunter on a trip working from St Blazey.
All in all I've done 35 shows and its been a very enjoyable experience. Wheal Elizabeth was built for the DEMU S4Soc challenge in 2008 and the concept was always a non determinate place and time, which would allow a selection of trains and periods. Extending the layout from its original terminus to through running almost certainly extended the shelf life, making it more interesting to operate and giving me the excuse to build some more stock. There are certainly things I'd do differently next time, the cassettes were the source of most of the derailments and I won't use them again in P4.
Thankfully I can't really recall any terrible shows. A couple of things broke, but we didn't have any major calamities along the way.
So thanks to Geof who's helped with virtually all the shows and one or two others along the way.
Anyway, here for the last time are a selection of photos from today.
I'm sure the new owner will break cover shortly.

Gutted that I wasnt able to make it down to see it one last time, of all the timing for my 2 year old to catch a bug!

 

Still, cant wait to see Cheddar on the circuit!

I've enjoyed seeing the layout and chatting to you at various exhibitions over the years and am sorry to see it go. Hopefully, it won't be too long before your current project is sufficiently advanced to start showing, perhaps as a "work in progress" at society events?

As the new owner of Wheal Elizabeth I thought, as Andrew suggested, that I'd "break cover".

 

Like many it is a layout I have admired for some time and think it catches the essence of a China Clay branch extremely well.  I did draw up plans for a China Clay layout for the Scalefour Society D&E Layout Challenge but when I saw the plans Andrew proposed and the progress he had made compared to my faltering efforts I abandoned that challenge.  I have however been building up a selection of stock for my own Clay project but now I don't have to build that!!

 

My plan is to take stock of what I have bought and also to bring some of my part finished projects to completion concentrating on my two main areas of interest, the mid to late1950's and the mid to late 1970's.  Once I am satisfied I have sufficient stock and have ironed out any problems that may arise during conversion to DCC (to allow for sound in the diesels) I expect that I will take the layout to a few shows.  I doubt I'll be able to manage the 35 over 8 years that Andrew has done but you certainly haven't seen the last of Wheal Elizabeth on the exhibition circuit.

 

I suspect that any stock related updates will appear on my OMWB thread on the Scalefour Forum if you want to keep an eye on what I'm doing...

Hi Andrew, I'd missed the previous announcements of 'Lizzy' being sold on, I'm glad I managed to see it (and yourself) at the RMWEB Taunton members day a couple of years ago. Good to see one last set of images with the modern stock. 

Good luck to John & hope to see a few progress reports some time...?
