Hall in the detail. Progress on 5993 Kirby Hall

Some progress on my model of 5993 Kirby Hall. Here's a photo of the loco ready for lining with all the detailing complete:

I've painted in the back head detail in the cab as well as replacing the lamp irons with staples. Cylinder drain cocks were made from small handrail knobs and scrap brass 0.45 handrail wire.

The screw reverser housing/handle has been refinished and the reversing lever has received a coat of Valejo gun metal.

A couple of questions as well regarding finishing 5993 as per this photograph:

http://evergreen.zenfolio.com/p853141025#h1a8cba0b

1: Would there be a vertical piece of brass beading on the front of the cab side on a post war loco?

2: I'm right in thinking the covering over the pipes up to the safety valve would have lining on it?

3: The cabside lining would be as per the photo and not a simplified panel as in BR times?

Thanks in advance.

More soon on the 74xx and those Toads!

Cheers,

Mark

Is there supposed to be a gap below the smokebox saddle?

Yes. Terrible design this Railroad stuff! ;)

(Just awaiting reassembly once the lining is complete)

Hi Mark,

The quick answer to all three questions is theoretically YES. However it is seldom that simple!

Kirby Hall was a late 1939 build, so almost certainly was out-shopped in lined green. Looking at its Engine Record Card data shows visits to Swindon in Oct 42 (probably received wartime black) and again in Aug 46 (probably plain green). The RCTS states that only a few of the original Halls gained lining again post war, and that was from Jan 48 onwards. She was back in Swindon for an Intermediate in Sep 48, when BR lined black would have been applied. So in a nutshell, if you want her post war……it's probably plain green.

Can't answer any of your questions am afraid Mark, but nice progress on the Hall.

Anything that progresses your TVR project gets the thumbs up from me.

BTW, I like the fact the Tender is large enough to accommodate a Jamie Oliver Professional saucepan

Those Collett 4000 gallon tenders were well built! :D

Thanks Pete...

There's other bits going on alongside that funny NG stuff as well.  Watch this space.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Andy,

Thankyou for taking the time to write this most informative post. Most appreciated.

Looks like it's going to be unlined green by all accounts for a 1946-1947 period finish which certainly saves some time.

I was building up steam to get on with the lining as well!

That link is certainly useful.

I'll send you a PM.

Cheers,

Mark
