Newton Abbot's Finest......7427. Finished conversion of Bachmann 64xx to 74xx

Eventually I've got round to posting an update on some of my completed projects. Earlier in the year I set about converting my Bachmann 64xx to Newton Abbot's 74xx for use on the Teign Valley project. Here is the completed model from the fireman's side. Numberplate from Modelmaster. Crew from the Airfix/Dapol set. Fireman's shovel from a DJ Models fire iron set.

Below is a rear view with a Bachmann fire bucket adapted to hang of the year with fire irons from the above named source.

The front view shows off the running plate handrail above the centre step .

Weathering was with my usual collection of Valejo/Tamiya paints applied through washes, dry brushing and the air brush. I may get the Birchwood Casey Gun Blue out on the coupling rods and tweak the weathering accordingly.

Cheers,

Mark

Bit of a tease for the next entry 5993 completed.....

Very nicely done. 7427 was at Newton Aboott during the 1950's which is the era that I am interested in for my proposed BR(W) Moretonhampstead layout, so no doubt I will be following your footsteps at some stage!

Very nice Mark, very nice indeed.

I can't imagine the Shed Foreman at Newton ever considering their humble 74 as 'finest' though! 6829 & 5028 were considered 'pet favourites' by crews and always seemed to get extra attention from the cleaners.

Keep up the good work mate,

Andy.

Thanks for the kind words Pete ;)

Go easy with that 'Smoking' trigger finger partner! :D

Thanks PT.  Yes a BR black 7427 would look good. I believe Lionheart Trains actually do a 7mm version which is a constant temptation.

Lovely work Mark. How did you get the crew in the cab of the pannier ?

Thanks as well Robin.

I used a curved pair of tweezers with a dab of contact adhesive on the feet of the crew doing a couple of dry runs first. The fireman has a small amount on his arm too.

Hi Andy,

As it happens I've a Grange with a set of 6829 name/number plates from Modelmaster as a future project.  Good to hear it was kept fairly clean.

Thanks as well for the kind words.  You advised me re: the livery on 5993 in post-war livery if you remember?  I've a set of plates for 5913 Rushton Hall and another cheap Oulton Hall to work on.  Wartime black is an option but I may finish it as per 5993 with BR smokebox number plate.

Hope you've managed some work on your models as well?

Cheers,

Mark

I do get the chance to polish a small bit of 6829 every now and then! Image sent via PM.

Hi Mark, that's a really nice conversion job - lots of us talked about doing it, but you actually went and did it! The weathering is also very subtle and convincijng, I think.

Thanks also for the tip about the DJM fire irons set, I have some of the Springside ones but they are a bit coarse and those DJM ones look finer.

Thanks Mikkel,

I used Tom Foster's article in Railway Modeller and his blog to convert the 64xx to the 74xx which made things easier.  I'm pleased with how it's worked out.

The DJ Models etched fret is very nicely done and is available from Kernow.

Cheers,

Mark

Very nice job on 7427, I do keep thinking about converting my 64xx body into the same loco to use on one of the freight workings through to Kingsbridge, but it needs a new (High Level) etched chassis so is well down the pile.)

Interesting to see your plans for 6829, I have this one on my to do list as well after finding a photo of it on shed at Newton in ’47, definitely a bit different in plain green with G crest W on the tender.  Although for me the only reason I haven't got on and finished it is that I havent managed to find a suitable tender yet.  I think I am right in saying that it had a Collett 3500 gl tender (which from Hornby seem even harder to source than the 4000 gl tender (and that seems nigh on impossible!)

Will be interested to see your model take shape.

I think it was an actual photo bought at a show as It's not on my computer.... searching the internet again the best I can find is the same condition at Chester in may 47 on colour rail

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your comments regarding 7427.

I've a GWR roundel 3500 gallon equipped Grange to convert so a case of adding the plates and G W R decals to the tender. Geoff at the Train Shop in Scarborough did have a brand new one for sale around £85.

A GWR Grange with a 4000 gallon would be different as I don't think Hornby have done one.

Cheers,

Mark

Interesting, I thought they had only released the GWR grange with the churchward 3500 tender. which name did it come with?

Hornby have done 2 GWR roundel versions. 6818 and 6877 I believe and your probably right regarding the Churchward tender. Would the Bachmann 3500 tender body work on the Hornby chassis I wonder?

Probably, all be it not to the same level of detail. I think I have a churchward tender in bits upstairs, I will try and have a look if it fits

Nice piece of work on the 74xx.  Thanks, too, for the advice on how to do likewise.

This is a lovely looking conversion, Mark.

I have one question for now, what was it like removing the auto-fitted box from the buffer beams, please?
