Stour Valley in P4, A quick mock-up

Fen End Pit

Modelling in two scales simultaneously (4mm for Stour Valley and 16mm for Fen End Pit) does mean that sometimes it take a bit of mind bending to go from one to the other. Having made good progress with the track in the goods yard I was getting worried that I might have made a mistake with the size of the good shed as it 'looked' too small. I'd taken the sizes off the maps and descriptions I can find and every produced the drawings by counting bricks.

I decided to print out the plans of the building a make a quick foamboard and card mock up to satisfy myself I hadn't made a fundamental error. Bear in mind the building is sitting 6mm higher than it should be because there will be a slot for the 'foundations' to sit in.

So, what did the resulting building tell me? Well it looks good in terms of length but I think I need to make it a shade taller. I've allowed 1.1mm per brick course which should be right but the height of the doors isn't quite tall enough to accommodate a locomotive chimney. I'm faced with several possible reasons.

1) allowing a scale 3.3" per brick course isn't quite enough and I need to increase the height of each course
2) the rail level of the piece of track laid through the goods shed doors in the current country park is above the original rail height
3) the current doors are actually a little lower than those originally fitted
4) the ride height on my locos is too high

I'm tempted to think it is a mix of several of these factors. The pitch of the roof looks a little on the shallow side which leads additional weight to 1.
I'm only talking about may 3-4mm too low so I'm sure I can fiddle it. After all it is Scalefour - Getting It - Alright

I am also pleased with the space behind the shed, It looks like I have space for the access road and some 'greenery' to represent the start of the castle mount.
