on hold...but not forgotten...

Evening peeps,

Long time since my last entry on this as am dipping the toe in the senior scale at the moment (well I did turn 50 in April so felt it was time ;)) however this is still simmering away on the back burner.

I am currently in the process of converting Kyle to DCC so the intention this will be wired to suit as you may recall the idea is to attach to the other end of the Fiddle Yard. Whilst trains will not run through as such, some of the rolling stock will be used with the Thurso regular locos topping the formations.

One of the other reasons this project went on hold was I was still not convinced by the overall arrangement and configuration. I had changed the station end losing the letterbox slot view for a more open arrangement but it still bugs me whether this is the right move.

Whilst looking at the layout in context with the Fiddle Yard and Kyle it struck me that maybe it was too long. Granted KoL is short but I think that maybe I can remove a chunk and still capture the feel of Thurso. After all, the station building at Kyle is considerably longer in reality but peeps still equate the model to the location.

I am also thinking of reducing the width of the platform too as I have modelled it to represent the edge of the bay. I am going to bring the building to the edge thus losing the asymmetrical edge to the station building. This should gain about 18mm and it may be that the goods shed can be modelled wider and incorporate the siding as per this pic:

The good thing about making the mock up is it allows you not to be too precious about it and it can be marked up and adjusted accordingly prior to making the baseboards.

Here's a few pics showing the cut and shut proposals on the mock up - uncoupling positions have been indicated previously by a red dot.

I shall be taking the mock up along to the 2mmFS AGM next Saturday at the MRC London along with KoL so I hope to get some feedback on the proposals - as always, comments welcome.

interesting indeed how big is this board ?  of more importance can my unfinished 207 make a trip to KoL beware it is green

My thoughts - I would try and extend the width of the goods shed. I find that low relief rarely works well and getting the shed as a full model will look far better.

It's about 1100mm long currently (coincidentally the same length of an IKEA Lack shelf :P) whilst KoL weighs in at approx 600mm in length.

Sure, bring your 207...as it passes under the bridge it will get a respray into blue as it emerges ;)

Thanks Richard - I think I won't manage to get the full width but should be able to accommodate the siding and almost all the width...

Hi Pete,

Good to see an update on Thurso ;). Always good to see your mock ups ;).

This will no doubt be another great layout in the making :sungum:

Easy on the 7mm in the meantime! :D

Cheers,

Mark :)

In the words of Gregory, Ware & Marsh (1983) 'Lead us not in to temptation......' :D

Sounds like a good week off planned ;)

 can't beat the 80's...and H17 were in good form when I saw them last week ;)

The plan is to try and get the fascia's built...but I might hack around this mock up too to get a more accurate picture of what I am trying to achieve...

Hi Pete, the cut and shut seems straightforward, I probably wouldn't even have noticed if you had done it and not told us :-)

The width is more tricky, but on balance I would agree with Richard, ie I think it would be better to have more depth at the back. Partly because of the advantages of having more relief on the buildings, and partly because in my experience it rarely looks good when the rearmost track is too close to the backscene or a structure (I have learnt that from my goods depot layout, which has a design a bit like your station end).

In fact, I am thinking about increasing the width at the back of my own current layout for the very same reason.

Thanks Mikkel

I think with the length, it's never going to be halved to match Kyle...and nor does it need to...KoL has the advantage of the overbridge through the platforms so it a tad more believable...Thurso has it right at the end of the throat clear of the platforms...so some length still needs to be achieved I feel.

For the width, I am more and more convinced that bringing the layout forward and having more goods shed is the right thing to do. It should yield the siding into the shed and I think this will give rise to more interesting manoeuvres than the bay platform at the front if I had gone the other direction. Good to hear your experiences gleaned from that too.

I think after the 2mmFS AGM this weekend I will take the scalpels to the mock up and hack it around to show the revised proposal...

Pete,

Contact me offline, I have measured up Thurso's train shed - it is not as small as you might imagine..................  Must get around to finishing that drawing to enable me to settle down and make it.

If Richard has not already offered, he has a fair few photos of it in the 1970s

Hi Mark,
