A day in the life...

Off to the Post Office, or at any rate the agents handling their Christmas casual jobs. A real window on the world, starting with the harassed-looking chap from the Kings Lynn area (35 miles away) who explained that he needed the work, because he needed to do enough work to keep his benefit claims in place - he had no expectation of supporting himself from earnings, there was no agricultural gang work (all contracted to East European gangmasters at rates as low as £3/hr) so not compromising his benefit claim was essential.

Numerous middle-aged chaps in cheap suits, many of whom had brought CVs which were politely declined, without exception.

A few teenagers. A surprising number of students from the local Regional College, who seemed to see no problem with missing several weeks' lectures. Numerous East Europeans, some showing almost no English. Applicants with incomplete or incorrect paperwork, various and numerous.

What sort of country do we live in?

After a certain amount of hanging about and repetition, was offered a job on nightshift at the sorting office, about 4 weeks from end of Nov. That'll do; right now I'm a long way ahead of my tax allowances (due to having worked 100 days in 1Q and 2Q of the tax year, so a payslip in Dec will generate a nice little reconciliation - much simpler and quicker than claiming a rebate in May!

Did three weeks’ casual work for Royal Mail to reconcile my tax paid earlier in the year. Strange atmosphere; a handful of retirement-age Brits, some depressed-seeming ex-Thomas Cook staff trying to make a Christmas box and a flock of younger casuals from, seemingly, all corners of the world. Hard work, too; not sorry to jump ship after 3 weeks to go back to sea.
