Running the 14XX in

Captain Kernow

Having received my most attractive-looking 14XX from Hattons last week, I have finally got round to running it in, as per the instructions provided with the loco.

I have added lubrication to the two locations under the chassis keeper plate, and also to the coupling rod bearings, as per the instructions.

I did test it briefly yesterday, but it wasn't a particularly good slow speed runner 'straight from the box'.

I have cut out a circle of Daler board this morning, to lay my circle of Lima set track out on, so that I can put the test circuit down in a room that I can close off from feline curiosity.

I do hope that the running in process works, as initial testing on the circle of track was very disappointing, with very uneven running, at both slow and moderate speeds.

I will update this blog in due course.

Although it's beautiful to look at Tim it would be in best interests of everyone to have a good runner. If you're not happy, get an exchange on it.

I think I might send mine back Tim, as it is from the same batch and I am having similar issues.

Kind regards,

Nick.

Out of pure interest Tim, what do you use to keep your track clean? Rubber and thinners as you used to use on TT2?

Regards,

Nick.

Hmm, I keep looking at the prices of RTR , then I read about the problems with chassis and running and wonder if the manufacturers are concentrating a bit too much on the top half and not enough on the bottom.

Well, after 4 hours of running in this afternoon, both forward and reverse, and with the loco turned to face the other way as well, the running has actually got worse, rather than better, so it's going to have to go back to Hattons tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to try another one out.

Nick - I keep the set track in a box when not laid out as in the photos, but I normally just clean the rail heads with cellulose thinners on a cotton bud.

Thats such a shame to hear you've got problems with it. They look so lovely.

Totally O/t but table and dining chair legs were the landscape my very first Dublo 3 rail had to traverse in the early 70s!

so that image kinda made me :)

Hi,

I have purchased 2 of the 14XXs from Hattons both are poor runners with jerky forward and backwards running. Both have been oiled and run in as per the instructions.  I have fitted one with a loksound micro V4 decoder with stay alive and gone through the tuning (CV54etc.) process 6 times and have found no improvement.  It is a beautiful static model but when it moves it shows itself up every time.  It is so bad I may end up putting a Tenshodo or Black Beetle under the auto-coach.  Very disappointing ........

I quite agree, it is extremely disappointing.

I have now bought a replacement chassis kit for my 14XX, plus new wheels, motor and gearbox.
