I suspect that Ben may have been close here?

I know the area pretty well and the rock faces are pretty good.... but I feel that in this case "pretty good" isnt close enough for you.....

Its hard to tell precisley from a picture on a lap top, and colour perception is a personal thing, but the grey seems to be slightly too grey, needing to be more to the whiter shades and possibly the vertical cracks in the rock should be less pronounced...

but definately not a necessity to start over IMHO

I'd agree with that, having just spent a little while looking at pics of Peak Forest on Fotopic. Fill in the vertical cracks a bit to soften them, then go over what you've got with a lighter palette and include a little brown in there too. Once you've done that, you'll be there, so it's a few tweaks rather than starting all over again IMO.

If you're wavering over whether something is good enough or not, it often helps for someone else to confirm what you've got in the back of your mind, even if it's not necessarily what you wanted to hear at the time!

Hi all

Just a quick update. Two more boards have been completed on the wiring and points at the same time as working on Martins layout. Still on target to complete all by the show on the 6& 7th Dec. Have moved my modeling room at home over the last week giving me more space to complete the buildings and as a result work has started on the last two buidings, The loco shed/maintanance shed and the last works building based on Buxton Lime works at Peak Forest. icon_clap.gif

i hope to post some uptodate shots this weekend. Work has also started on the two Diesels shunters used at the plant. The other one has been delgated to my China Clay layout Porth Eithin. icon_thumbsdown2.gif Hope this satisfies the purist out there icon_thumbsup2.gif Looking for operates in this areato help run the layout at shows with paul and I. Any offers? icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif .

Looks ok to me! icon_thumbsup2.gif

I drove past the place a couple of months ago returning from a camping trip in the peaks, having visited the bit of old railway at Millers Dale, I dont think you are far out, but...

-If there are problems with your model rocks I think it is that the scoring is possibly too deep or maybe a bit too regular (though I can see you have taken some effort to avoid the second?) I dont think the colour is wayout unless the camera is wrongly set?

I'll try find my pics from Millers Dale which has the same type of rock!

you could maybe mix a little fine sand in to the paint which might add texture to the rock surfaces

( but only if you think its required?- I tend to think limestone is fairly smooth (hence comments about the scoring?)

- perhaps the 'detractors' dont realise that icon_question.gif )

Hi,

As a former geologist I've looked at more rock faces than most people and I definitely don't think you need to start again. I think you need to chop the rock faces about a bit to make them look less regular and to hide or reduce the over-regular cracks a bit.

Fractures in rocks are VERY rarely neat parallel textbook-style cracks. They are usually a jumble of cracks in a rock face, often with a (usually barely) discernible underlying pattern. As several people have commented, it's difficult to tell from a photograph, but the section on the right of your photograph looks pretty darned good to me. I think this is because there isn't the overwhelming regular pattern of cracks that is apparent on the other faces.

But please don't start again!! You're really not far off! I think you've captured the layering of the faces with the grassy ledges spot on!

This photo illustrates the sort of cliff face that Peter is trying to model on GTD. I took this photo of the conveyors leading down to the main loading building off to the left, but it shows the limestone cliffs and grassed outcrops.

From your pics the rock strata looks too regular and the joints too coarse. One way of doing rock is with these Woodland scenics moulds.

http://www.Bachmann.co.uk/prod1.php?pro ... cs&prod=15

For the limestone area I'd try some of these

WC1230

WC1234

WC1236

WC1239

WC1243

WC1244

Basically you can mould plaster in them, and then apply the casting over or in place of your existing rock faces you're unhappy with. I've used them once before and found them easy to get on with and they produce a good result.

I've been looking up stuff on this on the 'net and there is quite alot of material, obviously just like trees, not all rocks are the same!

PMPs method sounds a good one the moulds might not fit your rocks/situation exactly, but see if you like the sound of this one first, you can always still do that!

- this is adapted (to your situation) and I can't remember where the original item was but I'll go looking for it if you fancy this method!

-put a thin layer over the existing rock face, especially making sure the deep scoring is filled but ensuring the whole is covered- thinly

- next get some silver foil, scrunsh it up, and wrap around some scrap wood , then dab on the surface of the rocks , this gives relief but it is fairly shallow (though my main worry here would be bits of rockface adhering to the silver foil!- maybe I didn't read it fully!)

of course a repaint would be needed but its not quite as far as recasting all the rocks, so might be worth a try, you can still recast the rocks if it still doesn't look right icon_question.gif HTH

PS: (edit icon_rolleyes.gif ) if you recast the rocks they would stand proud of the existing ones, which obviously would be a problem if they are right next to the track with small clearances as I think some of the Peak forest ones are? - to remove & replace well ok its an option but if youve been using PVA you cant get a small section out without moving half the rest of the layout too - 'Stronger than the wood itself' etc, etc!!

Thanks all for the info. on the rock faces. I think that for the time being I am going to leave them and see what it all looks like when the scenery is completed. At present still completing the wiring and the connectors to the main panels. Does anyone know of a clear transparent stickey back sheet that I can run through my A3 printer after I have printed the track diagrams onto it and then stick this down onto my contol panel to allow the colour of the panel plastic sheet (cream in this case ) to show through. I have tried laminating sheets but they dont take the ink from the printer, and also have tried overhead film which take the ink but then have to use a glue to stick them down onto the panel which then shows a mess of glue streaks through the film. Any sugestions.

Good idea icon_smile.gif

I think once you have more grass (hairy hopefully?) and undergrowth on it will look far more like you intend - having been to the location it's based on. Final colour tweeks (simply washes and dry brushing would do the job) are often best left until much later when you can properly appraise what's going on with everything else in its place icon_thumbsup2.gif

You have something special here icon_clap.gif

I wonder if a commercial vinyl/banner printer could do what you want?

Ya gotta love that lime kiln. It also effectively puts to work vertical space which is so often under utilized. With having a surprisingly narrow hoofprint, it is a very impressive structure. Sure enjoy seeing good work like that.

Hi all

Work is steadily plodding along finishing the wiring and the buildings. Basic layout with wiring complete is still on target for the show on 6th & 7th Dec. at Talysarn Community Centre (any offers of help to operate greatfully received icon_thumbsup2.gif )

Meanwhile Paul and myself have been turning our attentions to stock. Mainly the manufacture of 70 of the old ICI hopper wagons. These will be etched body with cast metal chassis and additional castings. We were hoping to go into production with these by Christmas but due to the current economic climate we are holding back to see if things improve. There will be surplus kits produced which will be available for sale.

One other area that is in production is a few of the special wagons that have been used around the site over the years at Tunstead and these I am attempting to build and hope to have a couple of them finished for the show. Paul meanwhile is weathering some of the modern image wagons and engines.

Hope to post some more photos this weekend keep the posts coming with your comments

Hi all

At long last the end of the wiring is in sight icon_biggrin.gif icon_clap.gif . Only two boards to complete and then at the show on the 6th & 7th Dec it can all be tested. Meanwhile a shot of some of the wiring under the boards. For the time being I have decided to leave the rock faces as they are until all the foliage has been completed then it will be looked at again.

One other matter dose anyone out there have any unmade Crownline Kits of the 9F crosti kit and the rebuilt crosti that they dont want and would sell. We need a couple to try and convert the new Bachmann 9Fs as thses were used around that area in the 1960's. Hope somebody can help.

Regretably demands of the new job won't allow me to get to the show but all I can wish you is all the best! icon_thumbsup2.gif

The BL dios have had to take a bit of a back seat for the last few months but, with luck they'll be back on show in a few weeks!
