Cameo Layout

Considering a cameo layout, based on the plateway that ran from Radstock to Midford, along the towpath of the Somerset Coal Canal. Gauge was 3'5 1/2". I'm envisaging a scene, based on the wharf at Wellow, including the tunnel portal. Built in about 1815, ran for about 56 years, the replacement S&D only lasted 90 years.

The fact that everything will have to be scratch built is a minor obstacle. Deciding on a scale might be a problem, but using Alan Butler's figures means any scale is possible. The big problem is the horses. A steam loco was tried in 1826, but was withdrawn rather quickly - usual problem of broken rails.

But the sight of an early steam loco, crossing a horse drawn train has a certain fascination, and will challenge the perceptions of some people who have fixed ideas of trains in Somerset!
Edit - here is a copy of the deposited plan, superimposed on the modern (1902!) map. Interesting that Mill Lane was built by the S&D.

What a nice idea....

I've eyed up the Storeton Tramway, which was only a couple of miles from where I live, but don't think I will ever get around to it.....

Interesting Tim, hopefully it comes to fruition!

While looking for something else I noticed this on the Ambis website:

As a scenic item an etch for fishbelly track was introduced, although it was used as working track on a 1840's layout that was abandoned due to lack of storage space.  To complement this a plateway "rail" etching was introduced in 2012. Below are the 7mm and 4mm scale versions.

So maybe it doesn't all need scratchbuilding...?  I'm not sure how plateway complements fishbelly track, from my quarry knowledge they were used in different scenarios, but I could be wrong...

Luckily, the tramway remains were surveyed in 1966/1967 and the results were reprinted in the SCCS magazine 48, 49, 50 - which is available on http://www.coalcanal.org/wh.php

I did know of the Ambis etches, but it's beginning to look like it might be in 7mm, and to reasonably represent the track will have to be scratchbuilt. I'm thinking of a battery powered loco running on the plates - but that is still a long way off. I need to check if Templot will do plateway track....

With all the positive comments, I've moved this to the Cameo Layout threads.
