Fantastic!
It's great to see such an ambitious version of something we all tend to compress and water down..... out of necessity in most cases. The structures are extremely impressive.
Well done guys

Have sort out the concrete texture for the bulding. A very fine glass paper that I found the other day in Stermats. When it is assembled will cover the walls with it and then spray it and rub talc into it to give the texture finish It should do the trick.
Will be away for a few days wendys mum illgoing to seeher.

Hi all
Just a quick update. Have now most of the main yard working after having found a few problems on the track work where the copper clad has not been cut through completely. Two more of the hoppers have been painted an just need the lime stone dust (talc) dusting onto them . I have noticed that the hand rails around the top of one of them has not been fixed on. Most do this before I foreget. Still a lot of work to do but a lot will be done this wekend with a working party form Manchester coming down, ie Paul. and Jerry Next weekend. Any one is wellcome. The more the merry. On one of the shots can be seen Kinmundy ( The layout I am building for Martin(e)ops Wales, at the other side of the shop. Did I say shop its more a workshop and tip at present.
Peter.

I'm spending the weekend with Peter and sorting some minor electrical problems out on Great Tunsley Dale. Today we sorted out the three-way point leading into the main quarry storage sidings followed by some work on points 2, 3, 4 & 5 leading from/to the main lines into the quarry reception sidings and at the other end of the layout points 51 & 52 and the associated power feeds. We managed to sort these points out and check some other points along the way. We will continue with some more points tomorrow before I head back home.

Hi All
Due to to sme family problems (Mother in law) little work has been done on GTD. What has been done is the small detailing items, like dummy point motors etc. One point that I was hopping that someone out there may be able to answer for me is when did the line side concrete trunking make an appearance. I kown that the late 50's earlier 60's the cables were hung on posts at the side of the line but at about what time did they start using the concrete trunking. We wish to use some of this on GTD but we are not sure of the correct time period that it came in. Is there anybody who can adivise on this. many thanks.

I love what you're doing on Great Tunsley Dale, it looks fantastic. There is a discussion of trunking going on over on Jim Smith Wright's P4 New Street thread, might be worth a look. I think it's on the main workbench thread.
Other than that I can be of no help whatsoever!

Hi all
Have been doing some more of the buildings on GTD and the following shots are of the Dale Limestone Firms Limited building. This is again based upon one of the builings in the area mainly the The Buxton Limestone building at Peak Forest. The usual method of construction Foamboard shell with added micro strip over the surface. It will be eventually painted with Weather Shield textured paint to represent concrete finish.
One of the items that I require for the model is some large thick letters silimar to the Slaters but those are not large enough. What is needed are letters about 15 mm high Slaters do G scale letters in a fancy design not plain these are only done up to 8mm high. Can anyone advise if any such letters exist.
Also still have not found out when concrete cable troughs came in to use.Can anyone advise on that, have looked at J.Smith-Wrights thread but cannot see any date when they were introduced.
Peter

Nice photos of the BLF building. I spoke to Trevor M at club last night and he advised me that concrete troughing was certainly around in the 50s and 60s as he was on one of the projects at the time and that most of the north west troughs came from the concrete works at Newton Heath. So I think we can safely lay some troughing on the layout alongside the tracks.

Hi all
Have been doing some work this last few days at home due to having no car (in for repairs) . Most of the work has been done on the main hopper building which is slowly being assembled from the major components. I have resolved the concrete problem by painting the surface with a rough texture weathershield using sample pots obtained by Paul in Manchester as the local B&Q don???‚¬?„?t have them in stock, anyway it looks good still needs to be toned down but I don???‚¬?„?t think it shows up well in the shots.
The small lime building that was last shown is now awaiting some large letters that Paul Dunn of Coopercraft is sorting out for me. Thank you for that Paul.
Still a long way to go but it is on time for the Hazel Grove show in October, but we will be having a trial set up at Tal-y-Sarn Hall in Early September. Anyone want to come and help feel free.
Peter
PS Sorry about the stae of the photos had the wrong setting.

Painting concrete effect
Have you tried stippling stone, and lime colored emulsions, may be mix in a bit of filler to thicken

Those letters look good Peter, just the sort of thing that was needed! With some weathering and washing on that concrete grey both buildings should look superb!

Amazing layout! Can you tell me how you got the ICI hoppers? What periods would they suit?

The ICI hoppers are the old kit that was once produced by High Peak Casters, which traded from a model shop near the market place in Buxton. They are quite basic and if I am honest crude compared to todays sort of resin models, but at the time they were all that was available. I have about 14 wagons of my own plus I look after a further 17 that belong to Hazel Grove & District MRS and they can be formed into a steam era 50s/60s rake and a 80s/90s rake depending on the colour scheme. The actual wagons can be used on layouts from 1936 to 1997 inclusive with lots of changes of motive power along the way starting with a 4F and finishing with a pair of 37s. There are no current models available in OO but there is/was a kit in N gauge by Ian Stoate Models and in O gauge a brass kit by Uncommon Kits. There have been numerous proposals for OO kits in the last ten years most of which haven't made it to production for one reason or another.

They do the ballast hoppers like the Whale and Walrus but those are different bodyshape completely. I did actually scratchbuild some bodies of my own some years ago to use on some spare resin chassis I had been given and once I'd got the hang of the angles and sizes then I managed to make a reasonable looking body and these three became part of the steam era rake. I don't think I have any photos of them but could get some taken to show you.

Hi all
I have taken some of the buildings down to the layout to see how they fit. The main hopper building has now had its roof finished and the clock that is a main feature on the real building has been installed but today I noted that I have not fitted the hands to it. still reckon that I have about 40 hours work left to complete all buildings which is ready within the next three weeks. Main layout work is nearly complete on the three control panels just the point switchs to install. After that it is just to complete the last of the scinics.
Peter.
