GWR Coach Painting

The Fatadder

Some good weather this morning has resulted in a little more coach painting,

First up is another Railroad / Comet D95, rather a redundant coach to be honest (given that I now have 2 pairs of the new Hornby D95, and will likely add another pair when (if) Hornby do them in post war livery.) As such rather than finishing in post war chocolate and cream (as per my original plan), I have decided that the LH coach will join the RH painted in wartime brown livery. To that end I have dug out a can of Halfords Triumph Russet Brown and given the sides a quick coat. It now joins the queue waiting for its roof to be painted....

Next up was a Slaters Dean D14 which will form part of the morning Newton Abbot - Plymouth Workmans train (arriving at Brent 05:55), along with the return working on the rear of the 17:10 arrival from Plymouth. This is formed of a non corridor brake third and a non corridor third, I want another old non corridor coach design for the non corridor third (but not another clerestory) but I dont know much about non corridor GW coaches (other than B Sets) and cant work out a suitable kit to build.) Livery wise this will be in all over chocolate (unlined), as fitting an old coach on a workmans train. The wartime brown shade from Russet Brown is far too light for this, so I wanted to darken things up a bit. As a rule I always use white primer, so after a bit of experimenting it was clear to me that with a base coat of black the spray resulted in a colour much closer to GWR chocolate. Certainly close enough for a coach which will see a fair amount of weathering. This now needs to be fitted with an interior, passengers and glazing before gluing the roof in position and finishing off the painting. (the roof has given me an awful lot of problems with bowing parts, and this seems to be the safest way. At any rate the design is poor and has no facilitation for bolting the roof to the body (another reason I prefer a structure combining sides/ends/roof and a separate floor.)

Still not dark enough when sprayed over black, but pretty passable for a weathered chocolate finish I think.

Finally I think I have found a solution for the roof grey. As I have mentioned previously, I normally use a range of different dark greys for roof painting, one of which is BR Falcon Grey (the darkest shade in Railfraight Triple Grey and Intercity Swallow). Looking elsewhere on RMWeb identifies Halfords Volvo Dark Grey as a suitable match for this shade. My plan is to buy a can of this tomorrow and then get started painting the roofs, a number of which will eventually be resprayed with different shades as part of the weathering process.

At present the list awaiting roof painting consists of: 8 new Hornby Colletts, 6 Mainline Sunshine stock, a couple of LMS coaches, the wartime brown B Set, wartime brown D95s, the D14 and a Monster.

I made a start on the roof painting this evening, (spraying over white primer / RTR finish with Halfords Volvo Dark Grey). As usual for the Halfords paint range it sprays incredibly well. The only problem is that it is just too dark for an ex works Hawksworth liveried coach (as per the below photo).

(The coach on the right is a Hornby Hawksworth, the rest sprayed with Volvo Dark Grey)

However as a basis for a weathered coach, I think it is a pretty good basis. I still want to try a couple more different shades, particularly the Humbrol paint shown by Rob in A nod to Brent. Rustolium Dark Grey looks another potentially useful shade which will be worth a shot. I also need to have a bit more of a look into LMS roof shades...

An attempt was made at adding the lining this evening, but I think the transfers are just too far gone as they were not sticking to the paint at all.

So the question now is a decision between buying another pack of cantrail stripe transfers, or alternatively finally biting the bullet and buying a lining pen...
