Bakewell station canopy issues

Having spent many hours over the Bank Holiday weekend constructing the canopy of Bakewell station, I was not happy with the way the glue had dried on the perspex. It caused marks which I could not get rid of . This was due to the fact that I had used Deluxe "Rocket" super glue rather than the Deluxe "Glue and Glaze" product, Although the super glue does a strong instantaneous bond, it does not dry clear like the glue and glaze. So I took the decision to re-cut the canopies and support them with tape whilst the glue set. The supporting columns were also repainted in Midland cream to give a better result with Midland maroon added to the bottom of the column as in the prototype.

The result was a stronger supported and cleaner canopy which allowed the canopy struts to be added. I have now started this process and it will be gradually be completed this week. I am using Plastruct products for this stage of the process.

When Stanley Jenkins built Bakewell many years ago - articles in Railway Modeller c. 1980? - he soldered up the canopies from bullhead and flat-bottomed rail...

Hi,

Thanks for this useful information. I know that the supporting struts are made from thin plastic rod which would certainly thinner than the rail. Needless to say, it may be worth sourcing a back issue of the Railway Modeller.

Will keep you posted.
