Modified Hall pt5: modifying the chassis

The Fatadder

Now I finally get onto the interesting bit, modifying the chassis to correct the mess Bachmann made of the design.

I started by removing the buffers, central lamp iron and oil lubricator box from the front of the chassis, putting aside for later. The first job was to use the supplied template to drill the lifting eyes into the front frame, so far so easy with a 0.8mm drill.

The next job was a lot tougher, removing the Collett hall footplate between the front frames. I couldn't find any fret saw blades so reverted to the approach of plastic modelling used on so many deisel roofs and chain drilled it. This was followed with some careful cutting with the Dremel to join the holes before tidying up with a file.

The new footplate was soldered up and then glued into position into the hole, it's now starting to look like a Modified Hall.

The final job this evening was to fit the frame extensions / buffer beam brackets, which were folded up and glued into place.

At which point I have called it a day and left to dry, hopefully I will finish it off tomorrow evening, with the saddle, bogie, chassis and final detailing / reassembly still to go. To finish it odd I also ordered the nameplates this evening (fox as I needed some gunpowder transfers at the same time).

Thanks for this. I have a B R version and all the bits but had not started until finding the inspiration here.
