The Cardiff Show and a very distinguished visitor to Sherton Abbas!

I’m pleased to say that Sherton Abbas has returned unscathed from its outing to the Cardiff Model Railway show. Many thanks to chaps from the Cardiff EM gang who collected the layout in a van that they had hired and helped me install the layout at the show. Apart from the RMweb members day earlier in the year this was the layout’s first public showing. It was good to be able to set the layout up on the Friday evening, far less stressful than rushing about on the morning of the show! My friends Al and Rodger (Barry Ten and rouse2037) joined me on Saturday morning and did a sterling job of operating the layout while I chatted to the public. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can either operate the layout or talk to people, but can’t do both!

My Dean Goods developed an irritating, intermittent electrical fault about three hours into the show which resulted in the loco being put on the naughty step for the rest of the weekend! Once the dust settles I'll summon the enthusiasm to take it apart and find whats causing the problem. I suspect that the wheels are touching the brake pull rods on occasion, so a bit of strategic insulation needs to be applied.

That apart the layout performed really well and received a lot of positive comments from visitors to the show. I think my favourite moment was handing the controller to a little chap who was watching the layout with his grandfather. I asked him to press button 2 for me and the look of pure joy on his face when the loco whistled was a delight! All in all it was a very enjoyable weekend socialising with friends, playing trains and eating bacon baps, what more can you ask!

It was with great excitement that on Saturday afternoon a rather distinguished visitor arrived at Sherton Abbas.

Unfortunately the locomotive isn't mine and at more than £2500.00 is unlikely to ever be so! Still it's a really beautiful locomotive that I can't help coveting and does look splendid alongside Sherton Abbas platform:-)

Quite what the residents of Sherton Abbas thought of the next locomotive's appearance is anyone's guess, but it certainly was a very unusual occurrence! A glimpse into the future perhaps, definitely a powerful looking brute, but where's its polished brass dome!

Excellent, Dave, sounds like you had a good time, and so did your visitors.

I might have missed it in a previous blog, but how many watts of lighting have you got under the hood?

Dave, Sherton Abbas looks splendid.  Glad you had a good show - shame it was just a little far for me to visit (and the fact that we were at a local show with St Ruth).

Britannia looks absolutely beautiful (but then I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Dean Singles).  I assume that the crew are somewhere about investigating that big green monster and wondering where you put the coal.

Great, Dave. Looks like you had a lot of fun. Very sadly, Cardiff is a bit too far for me! Sherton Abbas looks stunning though, I would love to see it in the flesh one day. I imagine the running quality is faultless, along with everything else. Apart from the loco on the naughty step that is...!

Best, Richard

Thanks Russ, yes it was great!  These are the lights that I used to light the layout  http://www.diy.com/departments/diall-wired-led-indoor-twin-batten-light-with-diffuser-l1232mm/1238142_BQ.prd I bought a pair of them and have been impressed with the even spread of light that they give.  The website says that they are 41 watts and give out 4520 lumens, quite how that equates to the light produced from an old 60 watt light bulb is anyone's guess!

Thanks Ian:-)  I hope you had a good weekend with St Ruth.  Dean Singles are rather fabulous, I just need to win the lottery!  If it was mine there would have to be a couple of Andrew Stadden's figures on the footplate :-)

Thanks Richard:-)  I'm sure our paths will cross at some point, I've had an invitation to Portsmouth next year:-)  I just need to sort out some kind of racking system for transporting the layout, at present its damn awkward to move!

The Dean Goods is still languishing on the naughty step, but hopefully some progress will be made this weekend!

Best wishes

100W old filament (GLS) is usually around 1300 lumens but totally different characteristics - colour, colour reproduction &c .

It looks lovely and I hope to see it at Portsmouth next year

Blast.....I missed the Warship! Next time! (A quote attributed to Admiral Doenitz!).
Lol! I’m not sure there will be a next time, a number of Sherton Abbas residents are still in therapy!

Thanks Don, I hope you had an equally good time at Taunton!:-)

Thanks for the lighting info, Dave. The link to the B&Q site didn't go to a specific fitment, but I found your lighting rig blog (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/1131/entry-19323-lighting-gantry/ ), so it became clear from that.  Seems you've got approx 750 lumens per foot of visible layout. Interesting.
Glad you found it of use Russ, I’m generally very pleased with the lighting and delighted that the units weigh considerably less than fluorescent tubes.

Hi Grahame, I thought you would be rather taken with Britannia:-)

It all looks excellent Dave. I like the medley of carriages, very GWR!
Thanks Mikkel! Good old GWR no two carriages the same in one train!:-)Best wishes to allDave

Hi Richard, that’s a useful comparison, one can only imagine the heat that the equivalent number of filament bulbs would generate.

Hope to see you at Portsmouth:-)

Watch out with the P.W. Ganger if he finds out you had that heavy A1A-A1A monster on his trackwork...

Yes I'm afraid Head ganger A. Cruickshank is livid!  We're trying to convince him that it was an illusion brought on by his drinking, but to no avail so far! :-)

It was always 2 deep when I pasted so never got a close look

But looked very nice the bit I did see over the 2 days

It did get a bit busy!  Glad you like what you managed to see!

I was next door to Dave at Cardiff so was able to regularly pop round the corner and see what was going on. It really is a beautiful layout - more fuel for Kim's campaign to get me to build something in 7mm!

Come on you know you want too!:-)
